    RNS-E not updating firmware 260

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have been trying to update the firmware on my RNS-E with no success. I am currently running firmware on it which I updated myself fairly easily.

I created a CDR with the following files:

    Files: 00.VNS
    A2220141.MOT
    INDEX.TXT
    LDM.BIN
    LOADING.KWI

I burned it using imgburn. I finalized it and verified it. When I put it in the RNSE it reads the CD correctly as a software update CD with the 260 firmware on it but then it does nothing.
The same RNS E reads the 2011 maps DVD fine but even that DVD does not update my RNSE.
Any ideas how to force it to update?

are you sure you're not already on 260? I suggest taking it out and putting it back in a couple times. took a couple tries on my buddy's for my burned image to work. i also just downloaded and burned the whole cd as an .iso though

Definitely still running fw200 I checked in engineering mode and under the car menu info.
I have tried taking it out and putting it back in a number of times. How did your buddies eventually work? What mode (FM/ CD/ SD/ SAT) was it in when you got it to update?

it doesn't matter which mode you on. your unit should automatic update. did you let it load for a while?

I left the unit on (idle listening to the radio) until it turned off by itself. Still no update.

Why are you trying to update your firmware? Is yours factory stock or a retrofit? If so, was it European?

It is stock US unit that came with the car. When I got it it had whatever the original firmware was. I managed to update it myself to firmware 200. I want to update to the latest firmware 260 so I can enable AUX in.

honestly don't remember, and don't think it made a difference. the nav just didn't recognize the disk the first few times.

yeah i have burned and closed 3 CD-R's. They are getting recognized in the RNS E as "update DVD/CD's". Just not actually updating.
The 2011 Maps DVD which contains the same update files is also not updating the RNS E.

connect vag-com, go to Navigation 37, click adaptation then channel 97 and change value from 0 to 1, save, then exit..then try again. That should force an update.

No luck trying this. It still will not update. seems bizarre & unique to my unit? Any other suggestions? Is there a way to downgrade it back to the original firmware then try the 260 update again? It seemed to work when i first upgraded from original firmware to 200 firmware.

Actually that raises the question: I downloaded firmware 200 from somewhere online. I wonder if i have a 200 firmware version that has the .hack to fool the RNS-E to think its firmware 270?
Those of you with firmware 200 but running the latest maps DVD, does your firmware version in the car still say 200 or will it actually say 270?
How do I update my firmware 260 files to a later versioning (say 280) to fool the RNS-E to update?

Re: RNS-E not updating firmware 260

I'm having the same issues here. I have a good copy of the latest update.. I put it in my OEM RNSE and the screen reads software update cd/dvd 0260. I put in the unit and close it it still says insert navigation dvd. I tried to force a update but it did nothing... I put the same burnt dvd into my friend avant same year and his navigation updated like normal and works with the dvd. Only two two things different is his car came from the factory with RNSE mine was bought and put in at the dealer when the car was bought. Mine is already running a burnt dvd. Can anyone help? Pulled the codes for the nav and found these.. Im so confused as to why the ABS in connected to the nav.

I had the same exact problem minus the codes. I ended up borrowing a backup dvd made from an original and it worked. It did 2 back to back software upgrades. I guess the first disc was missing something.

Re: RNS-E not updating firmware 260

I tried putting a OEM disk in my car and it didn't work either. When I bought the car the guy had had some sort of dvd player installed in place of the cd changer but I can't figure out how it works. Could my RNSE be "hacked" and that's why its not updating? The only nav disk that works in my car is ones from 2006-2007. I can't update the software. Also how do I figure out what software I have

Did you set the RNS-e to force-update via vagcom? If the RNS-e doesn't recognize it as an "upgrade" (ie newer sw number) it will not upgrade. Since you are at "X", this might be your issue.

I would try to force an update with an OEM disk, then go from there.

EDIT: just realized you already tried this.

Your part number indicates you have a european RNS-e unit, and as such, there is some work that needs to be done for it to accept a North America nav disk. It was likely working before with a burned disk as many units make it to the states with hybrid disks that run NA maps but are not "fully" converted to a US unit.

Full conversion would involve updating some registry files and burning to a CD, then forcing update. I will have to look online later for the full conversion DIY.
