Plasti dip: Rear Valence and Grille Questions..

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just picked up some plasti-dip but have a few last minute questions before I get started on the car..

I am planning on doing the front grilles, foglight grilles, and rear valence.

    - On the front grilles; should I spray the chrome surrounds and inner grey slats so the whole grille is black. Or should I just spray the chrome surround black and keep the slats grey?

    - Does anyone know of a good primer I should use or is this not necessary?

    - Is it worth spraying the foglight grilles or will the upper/lower (plasti dipped) grilles be close enough to the stock finish?

    - Is there anything behind the grilles I should spray black or clean/polish while I have it apart? I know when the finished grilles go back on they will look good but I want to make sure it looks nice behind the grilles too so it gives off a nicer appearance!

    - Rear Valence: Does any prep work need to be done? How many coats should I apply? Best way to mask it off? Any tips? This will probably be the most difficult part, so any help on this would be much appreciated.

No prep work or primer is needed with plasti-dip, just make sure the surface is clean and dry before you spray. Don't worry so much about it though, PD is very easy to use, just follow the directions on the can and if you screw up it just peels right off away. Oh and make sure to post pics when you're done.

    i'm a big plasti-dip fan.
did it on my B5, did it on my B6 A4 and now i'm going to do it on the B6 S4 as soon as it comes out of the shop.
mine is dolphin grey and i'm also painting the rear valence, but i'm just painting the grille trim, not the grille itself.
and don't bother with the lower grilles, it'll look very close anyway and you won't have to bother about it possibly peeling later on

Should I do the whole grille black including the slats or just do the chrome surrounds?

what color is your car ?
i prefer doing just the chrome surrounds.
however, i find blacked out grills and surrounds looking great on white or black cars.

I just plasti dipped mine but it seems like the paint is peeling off? feels like rubber on the chrome parts..

Should i have sanded it or used primer of some sort on the grill chrom parts?

Here's a little guide I put together with some tips on Plasti-dip: http://nickscarblog.com/cars/the-ult...-more-for-cars

I love this stuff! No primer necessary

Plasti dipped outer surround & lower grilles, OEM finish on the RS4 mesh:

    close up of grille:

Matches perfect & looks OEM-ish IMHO

Does the Plasti Dip hold up on the rear valence? I'd be a little worried about the exhaust heat melting the stuff

Here are some pics of mine with just the grille without the surround plasti dipped, the fog light grilles match the PD grill pretty good and I wouldn't plasti dip them.

They are the OEM S6 lower grilles, and then I shortened them about 1" to fit the bumper. I'm working on a DIY for this right now actually, as I just had to remake one after a run in with a blown out tire left in the road :/
