I spoke with my service advisor and he told me that there is a camshaft-related RVU for some B8's. Unfortunately for me, it only applies to those within the factory warranty period. I'm having him check to see if it's something potentially catastrophic that I should pay to have done anyway, though I don't remember seeing any complaints about B8 camshaft issues on the forum. They have an Audi engineer coming in to work on this for another vehicle and he said he will ask him for more details.

I just had my Avant in for its 45k service and this "recall" appeared in the dealer's computer, they said it was a brand new bulletin but they had already repaired a few cars because of the part failure. There is a screen filter that can fail and allow a ball bearing to fall into your oil pan and do some damage. They said mine looked fine but another customer was not so lucky and he was getting a new head the same day as my car was in the shop.

RVU = Required Vehicle Update. Doesn't that mean it's a must? I don't understand why your dealer wouldn't just get it out of the way now instead of having fix it later after it Effs up your engine.

Yes they did replace mine too, I meant I was lucky that mine hadn't failed yet in 45k miles. Sorry for the confusion, everybody should have this repair done (if it applies).
Granted it is a RVU, but is not considered a Campaign per VW/Audi. The RVU is only covered under the New Vehicle Limited Warranty in this case.
- BTW Blake I'm still looking into this RVU for you and will talk to Adam on Monday with what may be necessary to complete it for you and let you know exactly why Audi released this information to us!

Last month when I did my 45K service, the RVU did not show up in dealer's computer. When I saw this post, I visited the dealer today and asked about this RVU. After asking my current mileage (4K before the expiration of warranty), a repair appointment was immediately set up by the SA. Thank you Blake P.

Definitely, thanks! Can you talk to the service guys and ask if they have any additional information on the issues they've seen so far? I'm trying to figure out whether it's worth it to just pay to have it done regardless since I'm planning on keeping the car for at least another couple years until ~120k+ miles. I hate to be stuck with a big repair bill down the road if I could have prevented it for a fraction of the cost, especially if it could potentially leave me stranded.

When I booked the appointment, I overheard the conservation between SA and mechanic regrading the availability of parts. In addition to camshaft adjuster, the mechanic also mentioned about replacement of camshaft bridge if there is already damage.
I just got my car back from the dealer for the 15D6 RVU. In addition to 06H-103-144-J Bracket and N-105-724-03 Screw, 06H-109-021-K camshaft needs to be replaced. They have to order camshaft directly from Germany, which will take 2-3 weeks.
Wow sounds like this has been floating around for a while. This is what happens when people don't cross post. Here is a tidbit I snagged from another forum from March.
on the german forum Motor-Talk.de there is a topic concerning the replacement of the camshaft-adjusting mechanisme.
this is a so-called silent call-back, which would normally be done when a car comes in for oil-change or service.
it concerns all 1.8 TFSI and 2.0 TFSI engines produced during:
02-2008 till 06-2008
05-2009 till 08-2009
the code of this service-action is 15D6.
this should be carried out under warranty, even if the car is older than the warranty period.

Sam here, I got a call from the dealer today saying I need a new cam shaft and they over night the parts. I am a little worried, because they said it has been wearing away metal and I think it might of gotten into the oil. It also set me back from getting to waterfest hopefully I still make it
Ill try to take pictures at the dealer of the damaged parts so you can see whats going on.
Here's what this TSB is about according to the tech at my dealer.
In the first picture you can see the net or filter is broken and a metal ball is in the hole. This is preventing oil reaching the cam shafts. The piece that is getting replaced is used to position the came shaft. By having no oil flow into this chamber, the cam is riding on aluminum. In the other pictures you can see where the damage has happen to the cam and mounting holes.
The new cam is on back order right now and the dealer recommends not to drive the car.
Interesting, hadn't heard of this one, but my wife just brought her car (09 Avant) in for an oil consumption test this morning (down to about 1200 miles between "add a quarts") and they're doing this today as well...
hey blake remember that vid i posted up a while back about that tiking noise...i havnt had a car for 2 weeks now when this part failed it damage a lot of things in the engine including the cylinder head...hopefully ill get the car back by the end of the week and i can make a post of what actually got damage and what really whent on.all this is covered under warranty.
I had my cam adjuster replaced during my 70KKM service about two weeks ago under the RVU. From reading this thread it sounds like with some, there has been some damage that requires the whole cam shaft to be replaced where others, like myself, have had no issue and just the adjuster is being replaced.

Ah, so it was this camshaft issue causing the problems? Good to know it's getting fixed, regardless!

Called my dealer and had my Vin checked.
Luckily, this was one TSB that didn't apply to me.

I'm sort of opposite in thinking. My car falls between the range that David B8 says this TSB applies to (mine was manufactured in Feb/09). I'm not getting the warm/fuzzy that they didn't know how to build this properly, then figured it out for about a year during the time they built my car, then forgot again for 5 months. It's the 6-2008 to 5-2009 period that concerns me...
I know it could be parts supplies, but same story there - the supplier had 2 bad runs of parts with some good runs inbetween?
Blake - you were among the first group of cars - when was your car manufactured - was it before 6/2008? Mine says 2/2009 and it was at the dealer the last week of Feb...

Yeah, I find it hard to believe as well. It's probably just that they haven't had any issues come up YET with cars built between that time period. I have a feeling they will soon enough.
My car was delivered right at the end of October '08, so likely built in September? Dealer said my car falls within the RVU, so who knows... For now, I'm just gonna drive it and remain cautiously optimistic.

My A4 was built on 11/'08 (the information marked on the body frame of driver's side) and was affected by this RVU. I am still waiting for the arrival of Camshaft from Germany, while my dealer keeps telling me it's ok to drive while waiting. I guess it's about the built date of engine not the car.

OK, so maybe they have expanded the range of cars affected... Guess I'll see what they tell me when I take it in for my 25k service... Thanks.
Just called my dealer...out of warranty and they won't cover it (78k miles...). Apparently, it's a 3yr/50k mile warranty. Since they wouldn't cover it, he quoted me a price of $288 for parts/labor...

Stuff like this should always be covered by Audi, it is not your fault that it has or might break. You should at least have it checked out to make sure it is not damaging your camshaft like it did on mine.

They could be using two different suppliers for that part, one good one and one bad one. Either way, it's unfortunately not that uncommon for a company to produce multiple bad batches and have them slip past quality control.

I understand that - it's just that without any additional info (like why those specific parts are bad vs. a generic design flaw) I won't feel entirely confident that my car is fine when my dealer has "Performing to specification" on the service request paperwork when I ask about it.
[rant]
These silent campaigns are annoying to me - without the info here on these forums, I'd probably never have gotten my power steering hose vibration issue or the sunroof deflector issue fixed. After 2 times of bringing it up during service, and them only noting "Performing as designed" or "Performing to specification" - the third time I gave the SA the TSB 's and said "these sound very similar to what I'm experiencing - can you check to see if these apply to my car?" and that got them fixed. Some dealers are better than others, but I shouldn't have to give the service dept a TSB # to get my car fixed... but since it is what it is, having TSB's available to owners would be nice.
Audi seems to have problems with camshafts.
My Audi A6 4F also had a camshaft recall. Seems a huge lot of the A6 4F had this recall as well as ignition coil packs.
Wouldn't be surprised if a ignition coil pack recall comes out in the future. :)
Need to go get checked out for the camshaft recall on my A4 ASAP.
Just got a call from my dealer telling me to bring it in for a camshaft adjuster recall (he said recall). Have my appointment set for tomorrow with an A6 loaner reserved. BTW: my production date is 05/2009. I think some of you out of warranty owners need to call AOA and push them to replace the part at no charge. The problem might have just surfaced but the fact that the faulty part was used originally should be a good enough argument, or there is always a class action :)
Recalls I had so far:
1- Transmission filter washer (my filter fell into the pan).
2- Power steering hose
3- Sunroof aligner or something like that
4- Camshaft adjuster
5- Front door speaker rattle
