B8 S4 Bumper Removal and Grill Replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Tools needed
    10mm socket
    25 Torx
    15 Torx
    Flathead Screwdriver
    Phillips Screwdriver

Step 1 open and hood and you will see 4 bolts on either side of the latch remove these.

Step 2 Remove the panel that the previous bolts were holding onto

Step 3 Remove the bolts directly behind both left and right side of the grill

Step 4 Remove the bolts behind the grill panel behind and below the bolts from step 4, you may need an extension for the torx here.

Step 5 Remove the three silver bolts on the bottom of the bumper under the car closest to the front

Step 6 Remove the 8 screws inside of wheel wheel located towards the front. You will need to turn your wheels to get to them

Step 7 Remove the two tabs in the wheel well, use a screwdriver and pop them off.

Step 8 Remove the three bolts holding on the thermostat behind the grill. Just lay it on top of the motor for now. No need to remove the wiring.

Step 9 Under the car in front of each wheel there is a bolt on wither side of the engine you must take out. Use a phillips screwdriver.

Step 10 Pull back the wheel well material and look inside you will see a bolt that takes the 10mm socket. You may need an extension for this piece as well. Turn your wheels and unscrew these on both sides.

Step 11 I reccomend having someone help you remove the bumper because it is now loose. But there are two wires connected to the fog lights that must be removed to take off the bumper

Step 11 start from the sides and gently pull bumper away from the car. It should come off very easilly.

Step 12 Have a padded clean surface to lay bumper down in order to remove the grill.

Step 13 Remove the 6 silver bolts from the grill that hold it to the bumper and the black foam pad. From here you can wiggle the grill free.

Step 14 Put in the new grill and follow steps in reverse.

    Step 15 Finished Product

This DIY works well and is a few less steps as well. Just used it to do my RS4 grill.

Where are all you guys putting your Thermostat after removing it from the OEM grill? My RS4 grill doesn't have bolts to screw on the thermostat.. I took out the thermostat from the plastic housing to make more room, was thinking of 3M taping it to the grill.

I removed my bumper yesterday to install an rs4 grille, reinstalled the bumper but now it is uneven where the bumper meets the hood between the grille and the headlights on each side....but it appears to have lined up properly everywhere else. Anyone else have this issue? Pic below for reference:

You bet, that is the HomeLink transmitter behind the grille.

there are screws near the headlights, loosen them, they should have "wiggle" room, meaning they have notches to either go in or out, you can adjust it there.. or should be able to. I'll get a picture sometime..

I know the ones you are referring to. In fact, the one on the side that is dropping got stripped out so there currently is no screw there. However the pressure from the clip/tab arrangement there holds the bumper in place, and even if I push/pull the bumper up here I can't get it to line up, i.e. I don't think having the screw in that location would help anything. I think I'm going to have to remove the bumper and try hanging it again, this time taking care to line up those two top sections first, then line up the sides. I will get a larger diameter sheet metal screw to replace the stripped out one while I'm at it.

before you do that, you can also adjust the height of the hood.. I'm not sure what component needs adjusting, but taking it off would be the last thing I fiddled around with, there are two black rubber swivel screws on the hood that go in and out, and should change the distant minorly, but will also change the distance from fender to hood.

Can someone help me? new Audi owner and I'm doing this installation. My question is specific to the 10mm bolt that is on the driver side. I can't seem to locate it. the only one I seem to be able to see that resembles this seem to screw the intercooler to the bracket. Is there anybody out there that does this that can maybe take a picture and point out where the 10mm bolt I need to remove is located on the driver side?

If it's the one I think you're referring to, it's sort of below and behind the headlight. I ended up removing my headlights because it made it easier to access that bolt.

The DIY I read back before doing mine said that the bolt could be accessed up through the front of the wheel well by moving the fender liner out of the way and reaching up in there. I just found it easier to get the headlights out and go in from the front.

its on both sides, so if you located the passenger one, you can find the drivers. in the pics above, step 10....once you turn the wheels (do not need to remove) and remove the lower two T25 screws (step 6), you can pull back the fender liner (you do not need to remove the tabs in step 7) and look towards the front of the car, just behind the headlight and you will see the 10mm bolt. you will need about 12-15" worth of socket extensions.
