Airbag Help - calling Old Guy, Diagnosticator, etc

long shot, but figured id ask the question. I am having the "01222 - Crash Sensor Side Airbag. Passenger side (G180)" electrical fault. I pulled apart the trim and got down to the sensor in the b pillar. As it turns out, the foam which covers the sensor is soaked - i literally just rang water out of it.

The connection itself did not look wet, so now I wonder if the water damaged the sensor.

does anyone know what the resistance of the sensor should be while removed so i can check to see if the sensor is bad?

Can these things be dried out? How do you think water got inside the B pillar?

Haaaa my sensor needs to be changed too.
Got the replacement ready to go in.
Have not taken a look yet. Light has been out for 2 weeks now since I got the replacement part in.
Was thinking just this morning that with the weather getting warmer I would be ready to jump on it when the light comes on again.

Will keep my eye on the fact that it might be water related AND check for water damage when I go in there.

Come to think of it there might be a correlation. No rain here in NCal for the past 2 weeks.... Hmmmmm

EDIT::: Part cost was about $90

I just read through the Bentley and it states in large red letters "Do not check with test light, voltmeter or ohmmeter under any circumstances"

It goes on to say "If the airbag malfunction indicator lamp K75 shows a malfunction after assembly, DTC memory must be checked with Vehical Diagnostic Testing and Information System VAS 5051A, cleared and then rechecked."

It also cautions to always disconnect the battery before removing or installing the sensor.

I would try drying everything out, clearing the DTC and see if the code comes back.

    Also, check your sunroof drains.

    Good luck!

I did not check the sensor with the meter, did not see where it said that though. I disconnected the battery before doing the work. I cleared the codes with vag com but it just came right back. Is that going to be something different than the VAS 5051A? maybe they just have to be recleared differently?

i have to check what other wiring could be causing issues

I don't think so. If the code came back it sounds like the sensor is hosed.

OK Small correction. After further reading the warning was for testing the airbag itself rather than the sensor. I still can't find anything on how to test the sensor. All I can find is how to remove/replace the sensor. I'll keep digging to see if I can find anything.

I did find where it says the sensors must be kept away from moisture...

    Update:

The sensor ended up being wet as you already know. I took it out of the car, let it dry for a few hours and it still wouldnt clear codes. I out on my desk for the rest of the weekend, put it back in and cleared codes and It seems to be ok since. It doesn't seem to be permanently damaged - I will have to keep an eye on it though.

As for the water, in the winter I take my body kit off since it is too low for the snow. The past few years i have been lazy and drive around without any side skirts on. I believe there is a drain hole in the bottom of the B pillar which was actually taking water in (normally covered from the outside by the bottom of the sideskirt). The foam which covers the sensor was wet at the bottom, and dry at the top. I am fairly certain this was the cause.

I never resistance checked the sensor. Hopefully the problem stays away.

    Thanks for the input
