I havent forgot about you guys. Everyday that I get off work it is raining. I was going to attach my gopro and post some 0-60 and 0-100 times inside and out to give you a feel for acceleration and sound. The turbo spool is considerably louder, but personally, I love the sound of it. Once the weather clears up down here I will grab some videos for you guys. Weather just hasn't been cooperating

You have to roll with the APR tune. AFAIK, the hardware will not work correctly with the software. APR's tune corrects this. Whether my tuner can piggy back on the APR off the shelf tune, is a question I want to ask him but this week was deadline central at work so I haven't been able to schedule any fun time with my car and the dyno. Are you installing the turbo yourself?

I am encountering boost flutter. Personally, I don't like the noise. Under hard WOT pulls, it with flutter from 2nd gear and up. I haven't paid much attention to it in first as I typically don't pull hard out of first to much (even tho it is the best!). I have not had a boosted car in the past and did some searching on the forum and can't really find to much help to resolve this issues. Anyone can lend some expertise here? I can fix just about anything, but I am not that great when it comes to diagnosing issues. My guess is it has something to do with the wastegate or diverter valve. Any help is much appreciated.

Would you mind taking a vid of the noise? I also get a noise (described as flutter) under WOT in a low gear and was told it was normal (something about the DV's used on this car and how they function). I have also heard the Golf's that get the K04 upgrade have had this noise as well.

I have the same fluttering noise. It comes on as the turbo is spooling down. There have been a couple of posts about it and was able to duplicate it to my mechanic/installer but couldn't find any cause. I am just chalking it up to normal noises coming from the K04 that maybe coming through the Carbonio intake or something similar. There was no noise that I can remember like this from the K03. Also had the same issue on my B7.

We have an allroad as well and the noises coming from the turbos on that setup are way more than our A4s so consider ourselves lucky

I do not believe mine is having the same issue. The fluttering noise I am hearing is coming on when I am boosting and not when the turbo is spooling down. For example, when I am in second and hit around...15-25 psi, I get the fluttering. I will try to get a video of it, but all my camera equipment is in use. I can try and get a vid with my coworkers iphone during lunch.

Thats exactly when mine also happens and I have the factory turbo....any vid would be greatly appreciated...I have an iphone vid where you can slightly here it when its on the dyno that I can post if desired...

I think I know what you are getting at...I do have a rat-ti-tat (very quickly) on hard pulls in 2nd. Not occurring all the time. It would be great to find out if something is wrong, but other than the noise there are no indications of any problems.

Well yesterday I started paying more attention to it and noticed it is definitely only in high boost pressures that I get the flutter. Boost pressures up to about 15-18psi sound heavenly. So, with that being said, logic would lead me to believe that during high boost the wastegate spring isn't capable of handling the boost pressures and is releasing boost. I would love to get some more insight into this but the way I look at it is it has to be a boosting issue. What components are under pressure during boost build-up that could make a fluttering noise at abnormal pressures? We have pressure on the wastegate and turbo impeller. We have pressure on the intercooler piping and the rest of the intake track to the head. A flutter sound would mean that something is opening and closing rapidly. What part is engaged during boosting? Wastegate. DV is engaged when the throttle body plate is closed, thus returning the metered air back into the intake track. Could the high boost pressures be actuating the DV? Does anyone know at what pressure the DV relieves the intake track and recirculate? I could always remove the DV and boost test it as well as the wastegate to see if the either units are bypassing boost at pressures under 25psi. These are the only two items I can possibly think of to troubleshoot, at the moment. If one is failing at pressures under 25psi, then upgrading the part to withstand higher pressure should fix the flutter.

    Anyone have some input here?

That's what I was thinking also in terms of it being the wastegate spring since it was set for the factory boost levels....and yes mine is also during high boost pulls...I dunno how to check this since the wastegate is internal...anyone else with turbo knowledge and suggestions would be appreciated...

    There some help on wikipedia

Actual wastegate flutter occurs instead under partial boost conditions such as partial throttle near the boost threshold. It sounds like FftFftFft not ShuShuShu and is caused by the rapid opening and closing of the wastegate at boost levels near the spring pressure. It is commonly heard more clearly and may be more prominent on cars with modified intake silencers, up-pipes, and or downpipes, and is not harmful.

I have contacted APR about the issue as well. I have a date with the dyno this week and will record the sound I am hearing while I am there. Also, you guys can see my numbers finally.

I vote wastegate. Good luck finding/fixing the fluttering issue. Sounds like a bummer because being at WOT is what a new bigger turbo is all about, right?

So whats (if any) is the work around or proper solution for this since it is internal? I know other cars can simply replace them with stronger springs but thats when its external....

Not sure. I have not researched this topic enough to be able to modify a internal wastegate. I do know that just because the wastegate is built into the turbo, does not mean that it cannot be changed/modified. Anything can be changed or modified. Here was a little article I found quickly thru google:

Got my production equipment back. I was thinking about starting with a simple exhaust tone sound test. You guys interested? It will be for sound ONLY so I will edit it with a picture of my car's exhaust to keep video file size low and audio bit rate high.

Thanks for the write ups, I'm thinking your enthusiasm for the performance mods is going to go up drastically once you get to "open her up" haha
Okan, I looked into this and have a two suggestions.

Suggestion 1: on the APR muffler, cut the hanger, remove a small section that travels vertical and re-weld the 90 degree arm back on.

Suggestion 2: Bend the APR muffler hanger downwards (towards the ground) and re-insert it back into the rubber hanger grommet. My only concern with doing it this way is that it might need further adjustment because now the hanger will not be horizontal to the muffler and might leave the muffler at an angle.

Thats all I can think of. Short of making your own bushings and bracket, there is not much vertical adjustment on the hangars.

what is the max boost the k04 APR map running? if you have a way to datalog, you can see if you are reaching peak boost and holding steady, or if you are leaking from the wastegate. also possible that your boost is spiking and the wastegate is opening to relieve excess boost

How was this recorded? It sounds like it's clipping or the gain is turned way up and it's unnatural. My setup is identical minus the K04 (which would change the sound minimally) and it doesn't sound "similar enough".

Studio grade mic. about 10 feet away with a pop filter. Mic was output XLR to an audio control box and then USB to my computer. Off the top of my head I do not know the model numbers for the mic or box but I know the volume on the control box was not even half way. I can turn it all the way down and go for another recording session, but it sounds about right to me. I wont have time to do another sound byte until later tonight.

It really is quite at idle and while cruising. In the cab, you cannot hear the exhaust at all except at cold start idle and when starting out in first from a stop. It is a very low growl when pulling from a stop and is not annoying in the least. At WOT, the sound opens up but it is not an angry bumble bee honda sound at all. I will get some sound bytes of pulling from a stop and other various speed pulls in cab and outside so you can hear drive bys at WOT and cruising speeds. just have to find the time to compile all of this data.

Here is a clip someone filmed recently of me pulling away with a similar setup. He's in the furthest lane to the right and I'm turning left four lanes over. You can see me driving away in the very end of the clip. This wouldn't be quite WOT but it'll give you an idea of what the sound is like on the street (outside the car ).

I was messin around a few minutes ago on my way home. I decided to grab a quick clip as I was pulling out of my driveway. I got on it a bit in first and second and eased off in third before 90 (when I shift into 4th). Let me add that this is NOT a neighborhood and I do not condone speeding...my house is located right off the autobahn

In no way will this be a final video for you guys, but I thought maybe some would want to see some pulls just to get an idea. Video is using my POS droid. When I get the time I will set up a day where I record a bunch of media. To get a good shot of this, I will use my wide angle lens so you can see all my gauges as well as my boost gauge. Until then...enjoy my tidbits!
