Speedometer & Vehicle Speed Sensor problems

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I just bought an A4, and the speedometer and odometer don't work.

The only code it has is Vehicle Speed Sensor - Implausible Signal

I swapped out the VSS with a new one, still no speedometer, and the code is back.

If I go into #17 on the diagnostic display (in the heater controls) it shows 0 for vehicle speed all the time.

I checked the wiring at the plug for the VSS, and it looks fine. One pin tested good for ground and the other must be for signal.

I'm thinking the only thing left is something inside the tranny... probably a magnet? It's a manual.

Does anybody have any input on what to replace and how? I've searched but haven't found much info.

    Thanks in advance

I have the exact same problem and I expect to be the thing inside the transmission. I replaced the sensor too and checked the wires and its all good. If someone can chime in for an answer it would be nice

I got the same exact problem. I replaced my sensor too. I should mention that this first started happening after I gave my car a jump. At first, the needle would be all over the place. A few days later it stopped working all together.

Alright im back with some answers , after checking at the underside of my car i noticed a little leak on my shifter linkage shaft seal. The oil level was pretty low so I ended ajusting the level and now it works pretty good now. Speedometer works 95 % of the time , if i start the car and floor it right away it usually stop working but if im easy with the car at the start up( aroung -15 celcius here) it works fine. Try to fill up the tranny and see what it does.
If it doest wotk try to do an outpout test with vag-com for your cluster. You should see all the needles work they way together if your cluster is good

interesting... i have a feeling this may be related to another problem I'm having which is that if i leave the car parked in gear when its cold, its really hard to take it out of gear and impossible to put it into any gear until it warms up... also shifting from 1st to 2nd feels a little clunky, but i figured that was the 2nd gear synchro

i dont see how fluid level could effect the vehicle speed sensor... i wish it was that simple of a fix

I pretty sure it has to do with the gear the VSS reads off of. The colder the weather and the colder the trans says the better is works, magnets also perform better in the cold. I have the same issue in my b6 for about 2 years, all summer no speedo, all winter speedo around town until the trans warms up.

I would be one of those people acutally, Did your speedometer work at all? Mine will 'dance' about 3" around the acutal speed, ocassionaly displaying the correct speed. I did notice that one of the contact pins on the plug was slightly corroded, however Eletronic connector cleaner has not helped. The car has 155K on it..

mine was completely dead, no signs of life. but my magnetic ring was completely destroyed. maybe yours is just cracked...

in your case the first thing i would try is doing the output tests in vag-com for 17-Instruments and watch your speedometer needle. If it moves properly, then you may have the same issue as I did...

My car makes a lot of noise, sounds like throw out bearing? 1st and 2nd gear are fine, sometimes hard to get into 2nd or chirps. Won't go into 3rd or 4th, and will pop out of 5th. reverse is fine, but likes to get stuck. Should I replace this, and put fluid in.. or is the transmission needing replaced? Currently I am prepared to replace the transmission, but if I could avoid that then that would be awesome. Mine is a 2000 A4 1.8T Quattro 5spd Manual with 170k. My speedo doesn't work, sometimes it'll jump to 40? and about all the lights are on on the cluster, like brake, abs, airbag, eds or something like that, and cel.

Just sent my friend Fred(last person to post on that thread) one of those rings/gasket for his car since he was having the same problem and he saw your post. LOL
Those 2 parts aren't even that expensive.

How to remove LF axle stub from quattro Auto trans?
I am working on a 98 A4 1.8t quattro auto with the ZF 5hp19. This car has a speedometer needle that sticks at certain speeds. I am attempting to replace the speedo pulse ring for the VSS.

However it appears the Left front stub shaft is a long one that goes all the way through the trans case. It has no center bolt, won't pop out. It looks easy with the manual trans, but the auto stub shaft is different.

Does the trans need to be fully disassembled to remove this stub? or is there a clip accessible with the trans pan removed?

Thanks for any tips you might have.

    -Dan

It is on the driver side of the transmission right near the front axle flange.

Does anyone know how many "pulses per mile" the VSS puts out? I'm trying to find out to program an aftermarket cruise control.
