CAM Follower !!! F%#K ... SECOND UPDATE: cam, cam follower & HPFP replaced !!!

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Just came back in the house. Check this out. More pics coming soon. Will call dealer tomorrow. It's still under warranty. 65k miles on the car.

CHECK ENGINE light came on after first start. Is it normal? It went away after a few starts.

SECOND UPDATE 10/20/2010 As the title says I got everything replaced under warranty. The dealer was not easy to deal with, but after all I could not be happier I got everything fixed. And above all the tech found the missing piece. Thanks again to all for the info you guys gave me, special thanks to vannyhuj for his emails. I really think everybody should have the cam follower checked even if nothing seems wrong. That was my case. The car was driving perfect, the only thing I didn't like it was the extended crank at start. But I'm not sure if that had anything to do with this. I will see how's the start when it'll get cold.

ouchhh! could you see damage on he cam? You under warranty? Man when i first bought my car and read so much about this, everyday i drove my car i would worry about this happening so i feel bad for you man cuz that could be pretty expensive if not under warranty. If you gotta pay for it yourself, you could try just changin the follower and the fuel pump and see if the cam was truly damaged. I'm curious if the cam does get damaged enough to require changing or the dealer just does it as precautionary practice.

No you can not just change the follower.. It will wear out quicker than a hooker on crack!

So what's going on with the CHECK ENGINE light? What do you guys think? Is it normal after taking the pump off?

    Will it go away?

You will need to go to autozone and have it scanned for free to find out what DTC codes were generated that way we can better assist you...Or if you have a VAG-COM..

Yes its normal for the engine light to come on it might not have earlier due to the drive cycle. No it won't go away.....Sorry!

I'm not convinced that you really need to change all of those parts, because if he spring in the pump breaks thru the follower, i can't imagine that spring is strong enough to do that much damage to a metal cam. Now I dont know first hand if this is true or not but this is just my assumption. I think if you just changed the follower, in some instances, things will be just fine.

Any advices before I take it to the dealership? What should I tell them? How should I approach this? I'm on APR 93 (I have the full options, so I can put it to stock)

i wouldnt really worry about it, cam follower issue is/or atleast should be a pretty well known issue to the dealership and they should know the deal. As long as your not heavily modded, i don't think you'll have much of a problem at all gettin it taken care of.

I'd lock the APR tune so they cant see it easily, but you should be ok as long as your dealership is somewhat friendly....

Because it worked in the past, here is what you need to do:
Get a new follower from a dealer, different than the one where you will drop the car. Tell them that you were traveling in another state and the car started to run like crap. You stopped at a little shop and the mechanic had little knowledge about VW/Audi. He pulled the pump and found this (show them the dead follower). He installed a new one and told you to bring the car to the dealer as soon as possible.
    Voila

Ouch. Sad, but unfortunately a pretty common problem with these cars. PSA: Check your followers with every oil change!
Looks like you'll be needing a new cam, follower, and fuel pump. Good thing you're under warranty still!

now my other question is where did the metal that wasin the cam follower go? Inside the cam area? Up inside the pump? I guess that would kind of scare me :-/

i wouldnt do what phil said at all, thats a double edged sword....if the dealership wants to be an asshole, they could try and spin somehow that if theres more damage done to your car, that it was done by you and youre covering it up, or who knows what....lock your APR tune, take it to the dealership asap, play stupid, and the dealership will figure it out from there....that way, if theres extensive damage done a lil further down the road, audi already addressed the problem the first time, and second time would be no question about it addressed further...my opinion. unless you're friendly with your service writer and/or tip him everytime you bring your car in- then just slip him 100 bucks and tell him to get it done...thats worked for me with my last car on a $4,000 gas tank replacement because of a burned hole caused by my custom exhaust....warrantied for the cost of 100

Labor at a dealer is about 8-10 hours for this so thats a grand right there. Parts is about another 1000-1500.

If your not a jerk to the advisor you shouldn't have any issues. The dealer knows how this is a common problem.

if you look at the photo of the cam lobe, it is obvious it's toast: the pump plunger ate right through that thing... OP, have the car towed to the dealer and since you are under warranty you should get your car back in a couple of days...

if the check engine light is on....dont drive it to the dealer- you'd be stupid to do that....call them tomorrow morning and tell them that your car is stuttering or some shit and you dont think its safe to drive....if youre under warranty they tow for free...dont make matters worse

What do you guys think about this? He's making a good point here. Where's all that metal gone? I would assume in the engine? Do any of you know what's the procedure when they change the cam? Any cleaning involved? Do they usually get rid off all that extra metal that came off the cam follower? or that will stay in my engine forever?

All the metal will end up in your oil pan and will attach itself to the oil screen which will eventually compromise oil flow. Your engine will need to be flushed and your oil pan will need to be pulled off in order to clean out the metal shavings from the screen. My follower, HPFP, and cam looked exactly like yours when I had mine fixed earlier this year. Unfortunately I was out of warranty and ended up costing 2500 bucks including cleaning out the shavings. Just have your ECU set back to stock mode and the dealer should take care of it since this is a common issue for our cars.

You should also have them carefully check your cam chain tensioner and cam chain while they are in there. After putting my car back together it was still making a louder than normal ticking noise. It turned out that apparently some of the metal had been caught in my tensioner causing it to stick and damaged it and the chain. Another 900 bucks:(

I had the exact same thing you did. You can PM me for full details. Basically the piece of my cam follower came off as one, and ended up lodged around the cam chain tensioner. So I wouldn't expect this to end up in your oil pan. Oh, and I just happened to find the piece by accident. I highly doubt the dealer will do this if you don't tell them specifically to look for it.

WHAAT? $60/hour? I'll hire that mechanic for myself and have him always with me.

I thought audi charges around $100. My dealership charges 135/hour

If you need to take care of this yourself...call RSW in Washington, NJ (908) 223-7477 and ask for Pat or JR!! They will help you.

They can handle just about anything you can throw at them!!
