    X34 CF Intake Installed

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Picked it up today at the Dyno Day. Installed it when I got home - hardest part of the install was removing the OEM air box. Snaps into place at the front grill and then bolts up to the OEM bolt. I used an allen head to secure it. The mounted the modules on the plate provided but haven't permanently installed the plate - just ziptied it in place as you can see in the pics - not quite sure where to permanently install it. Fit was great.

^definitely, if you're tuned for it. If not, stick with the stock airbox.

I need to do a retune anyway because my car is tuned for 92 octane - was in Washington state originally. I'm going to add phenolic spacers and then have 034 do a custom tune on their dyno for 91 octane. It should free up a few ponies. I'll be honest - I bought the CF for the bling - and I had some extra $$$ after selling a bunch of track related stuff off my TT.

Mount the modules behind the shield, where the bodypart they're ziptied to goes vertical. That's where I mounted mine when I installed my X-1. That was the recommendation by VAST, as well.

What did you mount them to? The shield itself? How did you attach them?

I think he means on the body of the car that goes vertically, behind the heat shield

I was also wondering what people were doing w/ their ICM's w/ this intake setup or an X-1, part of the reason I have been putting off installing it on the car. Maybe I will just let Mike deal with it when I bring the car in in August :)

AUDIXS4X01 is absolutely correct. I mounted the plate directly to the vertical portion of the body, facing towards the front of the car, just behind the shield. That's where VAST recommended I mount the ICM's. There's plenty of room behind that, so there's no worries about drilling into anything. I've had mine like that for almost two years now, without a single issue. Quick and easy. There should have been some hardware that came with the ICM mounting plate with the intake. If not, you should be able to track down some countersunk screws that'll fit into the plate. I have really bad internet here, but I'll upload a pic that VAST sent me.

I wonder why 034 chose to use the little AEM Dry-flo filters instead of the big AEM Dry-flo filters that the X-1 uses..

Might have something to do with an easier install. The large AEM filter doesn't truly fit inside the box. It has to be slightly crushed in order to fit. Doesn't affect the filtration that I can tell, but probably makes people a little uneasy. If you look carefully at the filter in my pic where it's close to the side fender, you'll see some minor deformation. After having to remove and reinstall it several times, mine has a little more than that. Still works, though.

Ok - so you just drilled into the tower - I thought you were attaching it to an existing point on the body.

did you have to remove the aluminum plate from the airbox that the ICM's sit on?

looks great, i've been wanting to CF my own box for a while but just haven't gotten around to buying a 5x10' sheet of pink foam to make the cavity. if i'm still lazy about it then i may just get one of these.

Yeah, you just place the ICMs on the mount that's provided with the intake, after you mount the plate to the body. And yeah, I had to drill 2 new holes into the tower.

Nope the kit comes with a small aluminum plate that is predrilled and tapped.

I fregin hate these twin -> single intakes. People need to run a twin pop charger setup. More power, less flow disruption. That whole aluminum structure over the top of the engine is retarded and just a heat absoprtion tool. I'd want a twin setup that sucked cool air from right up into each filter from the front grills. The only reason people don't get rid of it is because they are attached to the maf setup which imho is shit anyways. Mafless tunes > all..

Some of us don't have the time or resources to get to a place to do a MAF-less tune. I understand what you're saying, and you're absolutely correct. As someone who has been able to drive his S a total of 10 wks out of the 2 yrs I've owned it, I can tell you that the X-1 intake was the most time-/cost-effective method of improving the intake situation. Someday, when I have access to a speed shop and the time and money, I will probably eliminate the MAF. I would love to custom-fab a pair of tubing that goes from a filter at the front grill straight to the turbo, one set for each. Until then, I must make do with what I can... In other words, don't be so quick to flame people for something they may not be able to control.

I'm not flaming people, I'm flaming the functionality of the product. Many people are concerned with how the product looks, I'm more worried about how it functions. I'm more stunned there isn't an off the shelf sollution for this.

With the ability to get 800hp using the Ypipe and a MAF - what is the incentive to create a MAFless tune without a Ypipe? I'm asking this seriously.

Well, AMD is making almost 700whp on the 770r car with log manifolds... Does that mean log manifolds are awesome and need no replacement? No. And what do you think the hp increase would be with individuals? Seriously, if you can make 800hp with a ypipe you could probably make 850 w/o it. That Ypipe is going to get so massively heat soaked after just 1 pull on an 800hp setup. How about you do this. Go do a pull on that 800hp setup, then do another one back to back. Then replace the Ypipe with twins that route to the front airdam and do 2 more back to back pulls and tell me where you're at.

Here's your incentive. The more power you can make without adding boost the longer your setup will last because less boost = less heat. More heat = less longetivity.

Normally I wouldn't even say anything I would just do it myself but I'm going vr6.

I was looking at it from a retail perspective - in terms of tuners offering a "kit" - like what VAST, Autospeed, APR etc. sell. Not sure it is worth the time and effort to develop one. That being said - it's already been done - probably quite a few times.....

It's also been done on evilevo's too so I wouldn't be pioneering anything nor did I claim to. From a retail perspective a more functional product will sell.
