Do all of you have this vibration?

I have noticed that when in neutral, if I bring up the revs to 2000rpm, there is a very noticeable vibration.
Does this happen to all of you?

Dealer says it's "normal" and a "characteristic" of this engine..

Is there a specific location in your car that has the vibration, or does the entire car vibrate?

It feels like the whole car - but it's most likely the engine vibrating that is causing the whole car to vibrate.

There's a good chance one or all of your motor mounts is crapping the bed.

    Right here.

Mine does this but I have a little bit of increased vibration everywhere due to Stern motor mounts. They are a great mod, but not if you want to keep your S4 'civil'.

I would be willing to wager you have a mount going flat.

I have the same issue. It's been like that since I bought the car (38k new - 53k now).

I asked the dealership to take a look at it last time. They said motor mounts looked fine. They actually blamed my catback exhaust for the vibration....despite me telling them that the vibration was there long before the cat back was.

I just put a snub mount in the car. It seemed to help a LITTLE...but the vibration is still there.

I'm convinced its the motor mounts on the way out. I will just wait till they fail and have the dealership fix em then. For now, it's frustrating. A 48k luxury sports car shouldn't vibrate at any RPM...nevermind an RPM where you spend most of your time. END RANT.

I have a similar problem. I have a new snub and my motor mounts look fine. Have also replaced the clutch/flywheel. Was thinking maybe its the A/C compressor?

The dealership "did a full inspection" and has given the car a clean bill of health. They have said motor mounts are ok. Somehow I am not convinced as it does not appear normal...

For those that have not tried this "experiment", please do so and report back.

BTW, I only have 14,500 miles on the clock!

Sounds to me like it is your flywheel. I thought I had motor mount issues and it turned out to be a seperating flywheel. The vibration from the flywheel feels like and looks like a motor mount issue when viewing the engine while reving. The B6S4 is known to experience this issue. Just talk to the guys at JHM and they can fill you in. I could be wrong, but I would put my money on it if the vibration seems excessive.

I have this problem. Its a noticeable vibration at 2k rpm. Had a very very knowledgeable independent shop inspect the car. They gave the car a clean bill of health (motor mounts, etc). I mentioned that the flywheel might be separating after doing research on here, but they advised me to wait till it became more of a problem so they can confidently pinpoint the problem. That way i could avoid a costly teardown bill.

I'm at 59K now and i have just noticed the problem. The car seemed to run less smooth and a certain rpm about 5k miles before. Oh well i'm still driving.

Be careful with this, if it's really your flywheel going bad if it lets go you could end up with a cracked bell housing. I saw a thread from JHM a while back about that.

So UberDave, does your S4 not vibrate at all when raising revs to 2000rpm?

I don't really rev the car in neutral, but I'll try it later tonight.

I have it as well, I actually first noticed it when I was looking for a B6 to buy and I was test driving a cars. The car my wife and I ended up buying has it as well. After feeling it in 3 different cars (ranging in mileage from 36K-65K) I figured it was just the way they are....it is kind of annoying though.

    Cheers,
    Jim

OK it seems that a few folks have this "behavior"

Can anyone confirm they do NOT have this vibration ?
And if so please supply year and mileage - and if any mods installed

It's very likely just a harmonic imbalance at that RPM (mine is between 1800 RPM and 2000RPM, most noticeable at light cruise on a smooth road at that RPM).

Nothing to worry about, IMO. A non OE dual-mass type flywheel will likely make this a little more pronounced.

Can you feel vibrations/rumbling in the seat of your pants and a bit in the steering wheel when cruising at those rpms?

I have this vibration at 1800rpm while revving in neutral. I also have a slight vibration / shudder at idle, but I think I might need a tune up / new plugs.

It's the characteristic of the exhaust. Have someone rev it for you and watch the exhaust tips shake at 1900 rpm. Nothing to worry, you are at a stage now where you notice all small abnormalities and have high expectations. Tiptronics do this also and has nothing to do with the flywheel. If you start modding with lw parts vibration increases.

Yes dont worry it is normal, ive driven 5 different S4's, 2 brand new, and they ALL do it. The engine is externally balanced, this is one of the symptoms when revving with no "Load"

Agreed. I've come to realize that it's just a harmonic issue particular to this motor. It's definitely noticeable.

Not necessarily looking forward to making the vibrations more noticeable if I go to the JHM LWFW?

Yea, and again at about 4k as well. It started mild and almost not noticable and got worse over time.
loong story short it was my flywheel. Completely replaced, and now there is only a VERY slight vibe at 2k, which is apparently normal.
