Auto Hold Retro Begins.. And Stops

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
UPDATE: a new DIY has been added to my site. Check it out at http://www.audienthusiasts.com/Project_HillHold.html

Well I decided to dig in a bit today.

Inserted the two new wires into the ABS unit and got the new switch installed in the centre console.
I have the lower dash apart and the engine compartment trim removed.

I can't seem to find an easy place to get the wires from the engine compartment into the interior yet. I dread having to pull the ecu to get them in. Specially since this is a trial fit and test. I am going to insert my wiring for power into the a spare slot of the fuse box up front for now to hasten the install.

My arm is giving me some real problems and can barely move it for some reason. Been going off and on for a while now so may have to see a Dr.. Any on the forum? :)

I'll try back at it tomorrow. If I can get the wires into the car I can have the switch hooked up in about 15 mins and then look at the coding and try it out. If it actually works then I'll look at a long term install solution and a DIY but I'm skeptical that it would be that simple but keeping my fingers crossed.

If all does actually work I may look at a kit for people to help cover some of my RD costs and time. Anyways don't want to jump to far ahead. Need to get use of my arm back first.

Sorry about that arm... Seeing what a mod-maniac you are, I doubt it will keep you away too long, if at all. Does Audi make a retro-fit arm you can DIY??

As for a kit, that is a great idea. I would be interested!!

Hmm is there a straight shot through the vent? I'll have to look. I'll get it in one way or another, and hopefully tomorrow.

May have to bug some of our ROW members for some info on programing though. Rene already sent me his being the resident Vag guru but may need a few others to figure it all out.

I figure a kit would be easy if you know what to get. It's 5 wire ends and the proper lengths. A fuse a switch and some tywraps. So if it works I'll look into it.

Arm thing is strange though. Everyone once in a while it just starts to hurt and I can't raise it. It's at it's worse when you raise in the position of like handing money at a drive through window. Just can't lift it. Oh well, getting old I guess. Should be able to use it enough tomorrow to try and let everyone know if this is looking promising or not.

For testing purposes, there's little wrong with wires going out of the hood and in through the passenger window. Beats looking for a gromet just for a test. Good luck - awesome projects you've got going...

Got a plan... It looks like the switch just needs 3 wires, 2 from the ABS and one power. I'm going to wire up the switch under the hood. I have my original parking switch that I can leave in the car and just wire the Hill hold on the new one.. Good thing I have a spare harness I can get the plug from and just wire it up. I'll let everyone know how it turns out.

    David,
Any news on this? I am excited to hear how it is going and possibly stop that backward hill roll.

Arm seems to be ok for now. Comes and goes. One day I will go to the Dr's but I hate going. Not happy place.

I haven't had any luck with the Hill hold yet. I tried hooking it up under the hood but I didn't even get the light on the switch. So I am guessing more Vag-Com work is needed. Go figure me stuck on vag com.. I will pursue it more but with so much going on it's not like I was hurting for other projects.

I seem to have a hard time getting help with my research. So far I have had only one person (Rene) provide me with a scan of their car to help figure out some coding on the other stuff I have done. Seems my requests fall on deaf ears when it comes to these more advanced projects. The problem is if people have the options they aren't interested in helping because they already have it. Of course being that these are all ROW options really cuts down on those who can help. This helping people thing is a lonely one way street sometimes.

But recognition where it's due. Rene was great in providing me with his scan and some training material and John has been sending me all my euro parts. Without these guys we wouldn't have what we do now (and wahts to come). I need a bigger pool when it comes to coding though.

David, the easiest and maybe the only way to get through into the cabin is from behind the ecu box. You dont have to take the ecu out just take its lid off and pass the cables though the lower opening with a stiff wire.
I dont have the hill hold feature on my S5 but if you need any coding or scans of mine just drop me a pm. I know we are in different cars but the B8 platforms are the same with im guessing 99% similarities in the codings
    thanks

Yeah I was figuring the ECU.. I just hate pulling the washer tank to do it. I'm going to wait until the temp gets about -10 before I get into it again. Don't suppose you have adaptive cruise or lane guard or headlight assist or folding mirrors or front parking assist (LOL)? Just a few more I'll be working on.

Well those are 2 I could use to help figure out exactly what the coding is. I have one scan but having more than one helps narrow down the search for options. I actually already have my car coded for folding mirrors to what I cold find but knowing my luck there will be on part missing. So far it's been 3 codes to enable the mirrors that I have found. The parking one I know I can't code because I don't have the correct module but a scan will tell me what module your using. Thanks for the offer.

I'm probably way off here but I started a thread many moons ago when I had my VW Passat and was considering Auto Hold. Seems someone has managed it and posted a pdf file. Anything in here which might help you?

pns; the site requires a log in but you can see what you were mentioning here http://www.passat3c.info/cms_neu/index.php?page=189 along with other 'Passat' mods. Oh dont forget to use a google translate or similar
Maybe David can take some relevent info from them or not.

Thanks morski, its very similar to the posting I referred (albeit in German! and with pictures). The Passat shares (or did share) allot of similar workings as the A4 and I thought David might be able to gleen some info from it. My Passat has long gone so never got round to doing it!!

PNS I would love a scan of your car. The more I get the easier it is to figure out the coding. The links are great thanks guys. I'm not sure how much help they will be but it gives me hope. I know that everything used to tie into different modules than they do now but it still helps to give hints of where I may need to look. I don't see any coding on the scans I have here already on the parking module. It may be that Ross-Tech didn't finish the encoding or something for that one or you can only change adaptations now. Unfortunately I'm in a hotel right now no where near my car so I can't play.

When ever you get a chance just email your Auto Scan to [email protected]. Please try and include a list of all the options in your car if you could. I know it's a bit to ask but it helps.

It really is the UK/ROW members that are going to help keep this stuff going for a bit. You guys have all the cool options and coding

Excellent, thank you. What I'm starting with from people is an Auto Scan and a list of their options. I know the options part is a big one but it helps to find the similarities in the non documented coding.

As far as i know the sw version is different between Audi that has Hill Hold and those that doesen't. I observed that after i coded some audi's to have TPMS, all of them had hill hold, mine didn't and i couldn't code TPMS. Maybe is a sw issue on the hill hold also.

It's something that has been sitting in the back of my mind. I have been looking for abs modules on ebay but they are near extinct. Doesn't help that Audi incorporated them into the abs unit instead of leaving them separate.

Thanks Neil, I did get it but hadn't had a chance to look at it. I only got back into town this afternoon and haven't had a chance to go through all my emails and attachments yet. I love the PR codes you included. I really appreciate the time you took to put that together.

Ok I had to look the wires up since I didn't need to buy those I had them in my spare harness.

The switch is part number 8K1 927 225 C WEP (This is left hand drive specific)

You don't need a new plug, the one thats there just needs 3 wires added to it.

The wire ends for the switch are: 000 979 009 E x2 2 ends per wire so you get a spare
The wires for the ABS controller are: 000 979 025 X1 only 2 wires to the ABS controller
The wire to add a fuse to the fuse box is a hard one. It depends on which fuse box you decided to go to and the guage of wire you want. May be easier to just tap a power wire for this one. Perhaps from the cigarette lighter?

Anyways that will get you started.

    David - re your arm.

I'm suffering the same at the moment .... but that's because I was knocked off my motorbike by a van doing an illegal right turn on Thursday. They think it's "subluxation" which is incomplete/partial dislocation. Worth getting it checked coz if you've got a nerve/veins trapped it then it's not exactly good for you.

Thanks Paul, you may be right. I know mine isn't cause by motorcycle because I've ridden it twice in two years thanks to the damn moving company that moved it north for me.. This year though :)

The next time it acts up like it did I'll go the Dr's and have them look. It can get really bad and what you explain would make sense.

OP. Sorry I haven't been doing to much on the projects lately. Been so busy getting everything up and going on the new website and working on the rear seats. Not sure why coding wouldn't be enabled on that module yet. That may be a question for Ross-Tech.

There needs be a couple scans done though to move forward on this one. I was looking at it and I wold think that an adaptation scan of module 53 and one of the abs module 03 would help. Just because there is enable and disable bits doesn't mean they are the ones that turn it on and off. And it may require 2 on or something else off... You get the picture. I haven't given up on this one just paused. If you go by what the other models which I know isn't always helpful they all tap into the ESP which is controlled through ABS. That's why I think there may be something there as well. Not to mention that the wiring goes directly to the ABS module and nothing to the parking brake.

Good luck on this and sorry I haven't been out there pushing to figure it out. I'll try and help though until I get time to jump back into it.

Audi auto hold.....retrofitted and finally working

God news David...finally after alot of trying and failing I have got AHHA working today. I have got help from a coworker of mine who also have AUDI B8 with factory fitted AHHA. I scaned EPB module ( Module 53 ) and ABS module and found out that ABS module must be coded to activate AHHA.

There is byte 1 bit ......if you count numbers ( zeros and ones ) from left to right there is number 2 which should be sett to 1. Thats it. I would like to thank you David for providing me with part numbers.

Well here is the coding for the Hill Hold. It's actually part of the coding I had but it never worked. Once again it's just for the ROW cars and not for NA.....Figures....
You are changing Byte 1 Bit 6 from 0 to 1.

    Thats good news.
Do you think that by changing one of the bits in the abs module would also allow the activation of the TPMS? I very much doubt Audi would make 2 seperate abs modules just for those who have ticked the £75 option of tpms. Definately got to be a coding issue

Rene, i already have read the posts about tpms enabling over on audi us forums.
My question was referring to enabling the tpms on 1AS abs modules. We know the 1AT modules are pre enabled but like i said earlier i doubt audi would make 2 completely different modules just for with and without tpms. It must me a coding issue somewhere. Hence my quesry and post

Well then it's two things, because they don't allow the Hild Hold either. I really don't know why they did that. Very annoying.

Maybe audib8tdi may have the answer in the coding he has if his friends car has tpms installed? Unless you do as well David?
