Cam follower DIY in PDF form

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I replaced the cam follower on my car today and decided to put together a DIY document of the process I followed in the PDF format. I used the pictures and the guide put together by a guy on VWVORTEX (BJ McGee) with my additions sprinkled along the way. The file is hosted on a server that should be available for a while. Go ahead and grab it, Cam follower DIY PDF document. I tested it and the download should work fine. Let me know if you find any inconsistencies, suggest any corrections or additions and I'll update it.

Thanks for the +rep! Yes, it is fairly easy if you follow this procedure. Having the right tools always makes the difference. Take your time and don't rush it. Honestly, getting the coolant expansion tank took the longest.

Thanks for the + reps! I hope this guide helps everybody who decides to do it themselves. I might go ahead and stick it in the DIY sections as well.

Re: Cam follower DIY in PDF form

I literally just finished discussing this issue with a co-worker, and fellow Audi owner. I was telling him how I'm planning on checking my cam follower but I needed to find a good DIY guide. This is it! Thanks!!!

    Great write-up!!

You might want to put in the PDF what year model your car is since later models dont use the banjo bolt.

    Just a thought.

This is awesome. I've saved it and I think Im going to get my room mate to do it for me sometime this week. Need to get the parts from the dealer first though.

I think it might be useful if you throw the part numbers in there too...

check out ebay but, I suggest, do not pick up any cheapo stuff. better get a used one by matco, snap-on, KD-tools, central tools, CDI... go for those that have in-lb range: 1ft-lb = 12 in-lb, easy... the in-lb tend to be smaller in size, around 11-15 in length. in the job, I used one by central tools. I have a larger one for doing wheels by powerbuild that was cheap but I do not care about precision too much when I do wheels anyway...

Thanks. I am going to put this information in but the part number for the cam follower I got is different, 06D-109-309-C. Not sure if there's a difference. I am guessing mine would be the updated once, C versus B. Totally forgot about the seal! Going to add that as well...

Updated the pdf with info on fuel pump seal replacement with extra pic as well as part numbers for it and the cam follower. Added that this guide is for 2005.5-2008 (B7) model. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions.

I have the version c of the cam follower also, along with the seal ( o-ring) . Got both from the Audi dealer. Just have not gone thru with installing it yet. This will help even if I have a shop do it. Knowledge is always good! :-)

Re: Cam follower DIY in PDF form

Just ordered the parts today from the dealer. Its like 70 something bucks for the follower and like 8 something bucks for the seal. (Canadian funds obviously).

The parts guy checked the parts against my car (2006) and the C revision is the most recent.

yeah, I figured it was not that necessary once I got in there. One can work around the coolant tank. Glad you had it done.

Hey man. Thanks again for doing this. Plan on checking tomorrow. Quick questions. I found these (they are 12point, with a 8mm) in my garage. Would these be ok for the banjo? Or should I get some of those "internal" bits set (like your PDF shows).

hey, Tusin, these should work just fine. all you'd have to do is to add the 3/8 extension to make the full 11 or so inches to get your wrench comfortably in there.

awesome, i'm going to order all the parts i need and change the cam follower. Do you think lubing the cam follower with high temp synthetic bearing grease before installing it is a bad idea??? I mean it could help, but if it gets into the oil it could cause issues??? idk, i'm just wondering.

I am not sure about greasing the follower because all that stuff is going to wash right off with engine oil. definitely not needed in my view.

Can somebody help with this? I saw this in the DIY PDF but I don't really understand what those things are. Thanks

I just need to know what this one is: Remove electrical connector - 2 - from Fuel Pressure Regulator Valve N276

and could I get a few more details on this? what is "Vehicle Diagnosis and Service Syst. VAS
    5052"

    • The decreasing fuel pressure can be decreased if a Vehicle Diagnosis and Service Syst. VAS
5052 is connected and engine control module is selected. And select display group 140 under
    "Read measured value block" function.

^^ I'm guessing you figured this out, but the electrical connector is the one on top of the HPFP. Just unclip it. The next bit is about reading your fuel pressure using a VAG-COM. If you don't have one, don't worry about it.

Has anyone else had a hell of a time getting the fitting for the high-pressure line back on? I checked my cam follower for the first time last night (recently acquired car), and it was a bit worn, but not too bad, but it got dark before I got the fitting back on. It felt like it kept cross-threading for some reason. Is there a trick to this? Anyone have any tips?

P.S. Excellent write up. Thanks a million.
