It's tough to explain but the large maf bolts to the mating surface of the shroud (doesn't just pass thru a hole in it). That means the vertical surface really needs to be leaned forward about 15 degrees, not vertical. When you raise the rear end up to get that angle right, the entire shroud rolls forward and the part at the front that takes air in is very cock-eyed.. You can flex the fiberglass version but the CF one doesn't flex as much. The first fiberglass one I was sent had the hole cut too high on the shroud and the filter touched the hood liner with the hood closed. It didn't seem right to me so I sent both shrouds back and Tony is crediting me one dyno tune file for free instead. This large maf needs to have a different mold made for the x-1 to really be right. Mine will look like crap but at least I'm not paying $400-500 for something that isn't made for this maf.

Thanks for putting the pump kit together for me!:)

Update: Sorry for no updates. I'm working tons of overtime at work right now so I can't do much with the car until May. Probably have the record long car build.:) I'm still on the low boost base file. I just drove the car today for the first time since last oct/nov.

Running 16-17psi feels very fast after driving the '96 Tahoe for a few months.:)

Looks like I'll be going up to CT for a dyno tune around early May. I have a new HFS-3 kit to install with two 1mm spray nozzles. I have one spare ecu but planning on 93/93+WI and a third file. I just found a third ecu to buy today.

Yea, headlights look like crap. I have a couple new driver side ecodes in the shed. Other sides are cracked from shipping.. deal gone bad from the UK (siena).:(

Finally added the S4 emblem. THanks Hal.:)

BTW, I noticed there's one time I really miss smaller turbos. I used to love turning on to another road and hitting the gas mid-turn (in the 135i and my last S4). The problem with big turbos is you have next to nothing in 2nd gear and by the time the bigger turbos kick in you're already out of the turn and going straight. It wouldn't make sense to downshift to 1st gear during a turn like that. I'm talking about making a right turn at an intersection or something with a green light.

Great point... it's stuff like that, that gets overlooked when going bigger turbos. With some unless you're driving hard you are always out of the fun zone.

Update: I finally stopped working 6-7 days a week. http://www.navy.mil/search/display.asp?story_id=61043

I'm off work and trying to get the house painted.. then I can finish the last few things on the S4 and schedulue dyno tune. Just posting this update because I'm sure people think I gave up and sold the car by now.. like many engine builds end up. I have plenty of vacation time built up (that I can finally take) so I **will** get it tuned this summer.

Small items I need to finish before tuning:
Install two new 044 pumps (I have AMD 2nd pump kit).
    Install larger catch can
Install new michelin super sport 275/30-19 tires
get one bent front wheel repaired
install new front suspension arms w/adjustable uppers, and get alignment
install 034 CNC rear diff support bracket and stern power ring
install 6 all new oem coil packs and new spark plugs
    install HFS-3 WI kit
change the engine, tranny & rear diff oil
install RS4 IC shrouds and modify to fit the ER ICs
fab air filter shroud out of hyperfiber
Oh, and get VA state inspection done.. it expired in April.:)

19x10, not sure of offset. It isn't stamped on the wheels. Believe me, I looked.

10 inch wide... nice. They don't poke out too much with the widebody fenders. I'd have to guess around ET20? Looks good in the pics above. I may go with 18x10 ET20. Kind of on the fence between 265 and 275 wide rubber. I want to get as close as I can to the uprights without rubbing (in order to get the best fit & not ever rub on the fenders/liners).

Looking forward to the results once your car is dyno tuned.

Excellent choice. I had a Torpedo IPA last night myself... and a Bigfoot Ale, too!

I was/am considering 18x9.5 ET26 for the 265 tire size, but I've seen some pics of 265s on 10" rims and the stretch wasn't too bad. Just wish I could test fit before buying!

265's on 10W wheels. Of course, it looks worse when tires like these have very little rubber shoulder against the wheel lip.

Just been busy working overtime lately and trying to get the house painted.

I just installed a 2nd 044 pump inline. I bought a pump/relay kit from AMD and hacked up a stock fuel filter to mount it.

Put some rubber between the two

Threw some liquid tape on the bare contacts

Drilled a hole for the power cable and installed..

I'm working on installing the HFS-3. It's a real pain..

A guy on the forums had it. He paid over $900 used.. I paid him just over $700 shipped. Yea, expensive but I've been looking for one for quite awhile.

Speaking of 034, you guys show a carbon fiber intake shroud with filter on the website.. the X-2 or something. Is there a way to order it without the filter at lower price? I already have EPL's big maf with filter and can't use the filter.

If those were v-banded would it have been easy? Or is the location in general difficult?
Yes, V-band would be much easier to work with. Standard allen head socket bits don't fit so you're using standard allen wrenches. The firewall is a clearance problem so I had to cut one of my spare wrenches in half and turn it using vice grips..

Ouch that sounds painful. I ordered vband gates for my car so after reading that I am glad I did. :)

Yikes ha. Sounds like something I'd have to do, no repairs go easy for me.

Good idea. The other issue I can see is the manifold flanges have threaded holes. If the threads ever strip.. I'm SOL. The wastegates eventually need service so it's not like this is the last time I'll ever have to remove them. I plan to coat the threads with molykote before install but you never know. You would never have that issue with Vbands.

Sent you a PM Dave, but we do have the X34 carbon fiber shield available on its own for a reduced price.

    Looking forward to more progress!
