It's time to say good bye...It's been a good run.

    To my Tiptronic!

Now that plans are more solidified, I decided to open it to the public. Originally, I was going to be more discreet about this, however, this whole thing will be documented and posted eventually, so I might as well share it earlier with the community. I happened to find a drivetrain semi close to me. Therefore out goes the tiptronic, and in goes a 6 speed manual that I purchased with 40k miles. Here is a list of the parts that are acquired or being acquired currently.

6 Speed transmission / shifter linkage / shifter boot / shifter knob / Shifter box / front drive shafts / trans crossmember / center drive shaft / rear differential / slave cylinder / pedal assembly / master cylinders / clutch hydraulic lines.

Obviously with this opportunity to take everything out, as some of you may know, I purchased Dougs stroker motor. Which will mate my 6 speed transmission. And here is my plan.

    Phase I:
Greg/DTH: Will be supplying me with Clutchmasters Clutch / 034 street density motor, transmission mount, and snub mount / JHM short shifter, solid throw package / RS4 pedals and dead pedal / RS4 shift knob, and a Aluminum manual center piece.

[B]Drivetrain / Motor Swap: Done at a shop in Rhode Island.

An AEB head will be replaced with Dougs current non-high flow head. Preparing for future upgrades to the intake manifold.

I will still use my Eliminator GTRS turbo in this phase as I'm curious what a REAL manual eliminator car can do. So the turbo upgrade will not be immediate, but plans can change.

    Phase II
Deciding the hardware that will be coupled with my motor. As per usual, I will be aiming for reliability, so I'm not trying to be the fastest car out there. Goal is in the regions of 400AWHP, but with stock drivability. So hardware is not 100% set stone.

    Phase III
Cry...Because I could of bought a manual car easily to do this and save money. But I'm attached to my car.

Let the fun begin, I'll post pics of parts this Tuesday/Wensday, and as parts come in. Start date we are aiming for end of January, beginning of February.

Sounds like you have a fun little project up your sleeve. Best of luck. I'm sure you'll quite enjoy it when you're done. If it wasn't for my car being my daily (and being lazy and hating city traffic) I would much prefer a 6spd, but for what it is I like my tip.

Sounds very exciting. I've been considering doing this tranny swap as I'm emotionally attached to my car as well.

Keep us posted throughout the whole progress. Good luck with the swap!

Back to the build guys! So what Clutchmasters Clutch are you going with. I've been looking at the FX300 and FX400. I've been liking the idea of FX400 if I got GT30 or bigger, but wanted your intake on what you are doing.

We have a 240mm version that CM will be making for us, which will offer just a little more clamp for either the FX300 or 400.

I need to get five orders together to have the flywheels cut.

    Standard size is 228mm

Thank you everyone for having my back.

Steph, thanks for cleaning it up.

Kirk, more props to you, but you have Ray as a contender in that category. Last time I checked he's on his way building his motor as well paired with the tiptronic. So good luck buddy.

Max, I'll do the best of my ability. As I most likely won't be supervising this while the mechanic does this, unless he can do this in a timely manner, but who am I kidding. For something like this i'd rather give him plenty of time and not have any hickups. I'll try to get him to document everything. I'll take pictures of each and every part for others reference.

Im glas you are doing the manual swap. my plans are to buy a donor car in the springtime to do the swap.

my only concern right now is getting all of the computers to work with eachother. im worried about what the ecu is going to do when it goes to look for a tiptronic and finds nothing.

definitely let me know how you are going about making it work right

Oh heck no on the GTRS. I doubt its possible. Thats phase 2. After I put the motor and tranny in. I'll be putting something bigger after. Just haven't had much luck with deciding what turbo/manifold/tuning etc etc. So i'm taking it slow rather then rushing in and doing it all at once. Just enjoying the phases of modding.

You wanna know what the ECU does when it goes looking for the TCU and its not there?! It automatically resets itself in manual mode! Whenever I removed my TCU after the swap (even before recoding), the cluster said "Press clutch to start car".

Biketsai, I read your thread, and i have to give you props for doing it. I'd never be able to do this by myself like you did. I hope the b6 ecu does the same. I need to go unplug my TCU to try it if it applies to the b6 chassis.

I'll set him up with a 360AWHP tune on the GTRS, then all of that fueling and associated fueling hardware will carry over to the HTA 30R

515 will be his number on the 30R

It should from what I have been told. Vince just has to unplug the TCU and let me know what he sees (been asking him for weeks to do it but he's been quite busy). Worst case, I have an '04 6spd ECU we can use.

I've always wondered about this also, seeing it took me a month to find an avant and I didn't want to take the chance on not finding another one. What kind of problems would there be mating it to a stock motor? What about the pedal assembly? How hard is that to swap over?

Wow, Vinny. I didn't know you bought Doug's motor. This is going to be GREAT to follow. Good call on the manual switch. I wish you luck!

12/23/09 - My car has been phenomenal to me. Runs strong. Don't think I'm ever going to sell it. Rather throw $7k into it for a refresh than buy a new A4 that has no dipstick.
    12/5/10 - 100k miles & counting!
    9/22/13 - 146k+ & running strong w/a new TB, water pump, etc.
