    Plasti-Dipping

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I'm planning on plastidipping my grille and chrome window trims. I haven't heard about anyone plastidipping the window trims, and was wondering if anyone has any experience with it?

Also, does anyone know if the grille can be masked off from the inside so I could spray the grill from the outside without taking it off?

My main concern is if this would be a risky procedure.

    Thanks for any input!

    -Joe

I'm very interested in doing the grill frame on my car as well as the splitter. Maybe we can get together and do our cars.

I imagine if you mask everything detailed enough, it won't be an issue, but there will be hard to reach places. If you're okay with it being 'visually' perfect, but not actually covered all the way, then do it.

    Re: Plasti-Dipping

thanks for the reply guys. is there a DIY for taking the grill off or is it just common sense? haha

also, i read in another thread that i should put on a coat of either matte black or glossy paint over the plastidip to make it look better. Does anyone know where i could find glossy black paint that would work with plastidip?

    Re: Plasti-Dipping

I plan on replacing or plasti-dipping (still undecided at the moment) my grille in a few months and have been educating myself on the process for quite some time now. Basically you have two options:

The 1st option is to remove the entire front bumper before separating the grille from it. Many have said that this method is easier but it does require you to put your car up on jackstands and remove the front wheels in order to get access to some bolts behind the fender liner that hold the bumper in place. The major downside to this method I see is the fact that no one really seems to know for sure where to safely put the jackstands after jacking the car up. Those that have done it seem confident in their choice of location but there still is no common consensus.

    http://www.a5oc.com/forums/showthrea...=remove+bumper

The 2nd option is to remove the grille from the bumper while the bumper is still on the car. It looks like this method is a PITA and requires a lot more finesse. The screws that hold the grille to the bumper are harder to get to and there are quite a few steps that require you to pull on the grille w/ the right amount of force so as not to damage the bumper but at the same time get the two pieces separated.

    Re: Plasti-Dipping

i removed me front bumper to install the AWE tuning FMIC and you do not need to put the car on jackstands or remove the front wheels. i'm about to remove the front bumper again to install my new grill and maybe the eurocode pipe. just gotta wait for the grill to come in

that DIY for that S5 is almost identical. I'll get the exact bolt/torx sizes for you guys, and how many bolts for each side. theres a sensors behind the emblem, and theres a sensor behind the passenger side bumper. I have the side assist so this may not apply to you.

instead of jacking the car up on stands and removing the wheel. turn the wheel inside, unbolt any fender liner bolts, just enough for you to peel it back and stick ur arm in there.

you can turn the car "on" to turn the wheels, but if you do this and all those sensors are unplugged. its gonna trigger a fault code, gotta use vag-com or apr's fault code erase to reset it.

if all you SoCal people want to have a get together i'll help you guys out. i have the ross-tech cable but you gotta provide the laptop, my laptop is out of commission for now.

i changed my grill a couple weeks ago and have a write up ready but i have no internet cuz i moved and im writing this on my phone.
4 t30 torx for radiator cover
2 t25 torx on top of bumper under rad cover
2 t25 torx for fender liner driver/passenger side
    3 10mm passenger/drived side
    5 t25 under the bumper

I'm trying to disassemble the front bumper right now but i can't seem to find the 3 10mm on the driver and the 3 10mm on the passenger side hidden behind the fender liner. I'm following the S5 front grill removal DIY on a5oc.com (http://www.a5oc.com/forums/showthrea...=remove+bumper) as well as reading what's in this thread. I've located only 1 10mm where in the s5 pic there's 2 10mm there. I've also removed a 10mm nut that was in a screwed in upside-down position (if that makes sense) that was very close to where the fender and fender liner meet. Any help in locating these 6 10mm?

    From ddun's post #30:
4 t30 torx for radiator cover
2 t25 torx on top of bumper under rad cover
2 t25 torx for fender liner driver/passenger side
    3 10mm passenger/drived side
    5 t25 under the bumper

Whatever needs to be unscrewed behind the fender liners is what i'm having trouble locating.
i can't find these 10mm bolts. I've found 1 10mm bolt on each side (driver & passenger) that i believe holds the bumper so far.
Are there additional clips and torx behind the fender liner as well?

Well after hours of jiggling and wiggling the bumper and trying to locate what's still holding on to the bumper I decided to call my first try at DIY a fail
Not only that but now there's a wider gap between my hood and grill
I was very careful in reinstalling all the pieces I removed wtf!
To those who've removed their bumper. Please HELP!!!

^Oops, my bad. I thought you were talking about the screws/clips actually holding the fender liner in. I only got behind my fender liner to install my intercooler pipe, so unfortunately I won't be of much help

These were the only pics I took before I put everything back together

Now into the breech!!! Fender liner at 9oclock, fender at 3.

Turned camera vertical to get around that black bar in the forefront in the previous pic. Liner at 6oclock, fender at 12

Turned camera right side up again. Liner at 9oclock, fender at 3. You can see the brown box at 7,8 oclock is the brown box from prev pic. The only 10mm i found on each side (driver and passenger) was at 12oclock in this pic (the 10mm bolt was already removed, only the hole remains)
