For those who've installed the S6 shift knob for Tip

I'm able to remove the stock tip shift knob but how the hell do I get the S6 knob to fit on there? I know a couple people out there have pulled this off - let me know what you did!

Re: For those who've installed the S6 shift knob for Tip

I've read there is some "modification" that needs to be done to the S6 shifter - I think I know what that means - someone chime in with their 2 cents.

That DIY assumes you have an SLine shifter- the S6 shifter knob is a bit different and not a direct fit

I did it successfully and had to do a small mod. It's been awhile since I did it so I will try to remember and describe the best I can. When you pull the old one off, there might be a grey sleeve that either came off with the old shifter or is still left on the rod. Make sure to pull that off, you won't need it with the new shifter. The other thing that I had to do was crimp the grooves on the new shifter so you can push the chrome sleeve up when you install the new shifter. The new shifter should go in pretty easy, the resistance will be moving the chrome sleeve back up and flush against the new shifter. Use a twisting motion to get it all the way back up. Hope that makes sense. Just look real close at the old shifter and the new shifter and you will see what I mean. If you have more questions, pm me and I will try to help.

can any members pipe in as how to install the S6 knob,we dont want to waste $100 on this thing even though the retailers are saying its a direct fit..must be sort of tweaking involved since a few members do have this knob on the tiptronic.

I don't have any pics of my install. Can you take a picture of the S6 shifter. Maybe that will help jog my memory some more. Also, do you have an Sline or nonsline car? I does fit, just takes some elbow grease to get it on.

Wish I could help but I had an Audi-Tech at my local dealership install my S6 shifter. He said it was a pretty straight forward install with no modificaiton. My car was in and out of the dealership within an hour, oil change and new shifter installed.

Thanks for making the offer on this Greg! Hopefully we'll have some more info with pics soon! Sent you an email last night through your site regarding the SLINE shift knob - hopefully I'll be able to get this S6 knob on and won't have to go with the back up plan.

Re: For those who've installed the S6 shift knob for Tip

Here's another question regarding this install: If the button on the stock shift knob comes out, how do you get it back in properly? This happened to me last night and I got the button back in, but its not in securely and I'm unable to remove the stock shifter now since its not "catching" and comes right off when I try to tie it with the zip tie...

Re: For those who've installed the S6 shift knob for Tip

To clarify for everyone - I was able to get the S6 knob to fit just fine without the chrome trip piece on the shift assembly - the issue comes into play for me when it comes to getting the chrome trim to snap into the base of the S6 knob - the black plastic tabs on the S6 knob seem too big to want to fit into the trim piece. If those could be squeezed togther more, maybe I could get the trip to fit onto the knob.

JJARAM - your box is full so I couldn't PM you (clean that mess up) -

The bottom plastic part of the new shifter is LONGER than the stock knob also....that is an issue along with the fact that the plastic piece is also bigger. Putting the knobs side by side you can tell the difference in length right away (plastic connecting pieces way different)

Dropped car off at dealer - since I jacked up my stock shifter so bad, I'm going to let them make this work. Will post pics later (assuming they get it done properly).

Re: For those who've installed the S6 shift knob for Tip

I found this not to be a direct off with the old and on with the new. Here's what I did. Only have pix of finished product.

Noticed right away that the S6 knob is not the same as mine, the black sleeve is about 1 1/2" longer than the A4 (non-S-line), also the inside diameter of the S6 knob is a little bigger ( I mean very little) but enough that the knob just slides on and off and won't stay on the shift lever shaft.

    Pic of original knob

    Compared to S6 knob.

First I cut the black sleeve down to match the length of the stock A4 knob, put some electrical tape around the lever shaft, gently forced the S6 knob onto the lever shaft, slid the plastic chrome piece back up to the bottom of the shifter and used a little bit of epoxy to hold it in place since it doesn't mate with the bottom of the shifter properly.

    Finished product.

Old enough to know better... Young enough to do it again, just getting harder to recover.

not bad but suppose you had to remove the knob, the expoxy is holding it down.I seen some dealer installed s6 on a B7,they some how installed it cleanly with some tweaking of the black stem......no need to glue it and it was a clean fit with no gap.

Dealer just called me back asking if I had the "sleeve" for the S6 knob. I said that others have been able to use the stock sleeve after a little modification - they are going to try it out and call me back - stay tuned....

Which dealer was it? Was it Audi N. Scottsdale?

Re: For those who've installed the S6 shift knob for Tip

Ok, so I don't have pictures of my install because I did it awhile back and didn't take any...sorry. So I am going to use some of the pics in this thread to explain how I got my S6 shifter installed. Here we go:

    Step 1-Seperate Chrome Sleeve
I know this is a pic with the S6 shifter already on but just imagine it's your stock shifter. The first thing you need to do is push the chrome piece (inidicated below with the sloppy arrow) down and seperate it from the shifter piece. I did this by using a flat tip screwdriver and wrapping tape around the end. Be patient, it takes a little bit of time to do this.

    Step 2-Remove Stock Shifter
The step is definitely the toughest. It's a matter of just pulling straight up on the old shifter until it comes off. As other people have stated, careful not to hit yourself in the face. It takes awhile but keep at it and it will eventually come off.

    Step 3-Remove Grey Sleeve
Ok, now that the old shifter is off, you will need to remove the grey sleeve (pictured below). It either came off with the old shifter or is inside the chrome piece referenced in step one. If it's still in the chrome piece, pull the chrome piece off the old shaft and use a pair of needle nose to get the grey sleeve out of the chrome piece. Once you the grey piece out, put it aside, you will not need it anymore.

Step 4-Trim Lip on new shifter
This was the part I was having trouble remembering. To get the new shifter to fit properly, you will need to trim the Lip (reference below) off the new S6 shifter. I did this with a razor. This needs to be done because otherwise the the shaft for the new shifter is too wide for the chrome piece to slide up.

    Step 5-Install S6 Shifter
Now you are ready to install the new shifter. Put the chrome piece back into place and slide the shaft of the S6 shifter down until it snaps into place. You will then need to slide the chrome piece back up. This takes a little bit of work and I did it by twisting and sliding until it was all the way up.

All done. I got the chrome piece to fit pretty flush without much of a gap. I wll post a pic of mine later tonight. I hope this helps everyone. Thanks, Joseph
