Audi S4 B9 reliability/longevity mods

Hi,

I am interested in buying an Audi S4 B9, so I have some questions about longevity/reliability mods:

1. Should I buy the petrol, or diesel version (Adblue concerns - disable, or buy a petrol engine)?
2. Disable start/stop on the S4?
3. Upgrade the stock engine radiator/fans?
4. Upgrade the intercooler (don't intend to tune it for more speed/performance, just want the best reliability/longevity)?
5. Upgrade the stock water pump?
6. Upgrade the stock fuel pump?
7. Upgrade spark plugs?
8. Upgrade intake?
9. Any other mods that can increase efficiency, and reliability/longevity of this car?
10. Any mods required to make steering/handling better (read that people install drivetrain stabilizer, sway bars + endlinks)?

Thank you very much in advance!

Kind regards

I would go with Diesel, and do 2, and 4. Purchase a 2019+ with a production date past Oct 2018 to avoid any paranoia with rocker arms. There are no water pump upgrades at the moment, but something I plan on trying once I get my water pump replaced is disconnect the vacuum line that actuates the water pump sleeve that is known to fail and cause a leak that goes into your vacuum lines.

Hi,

I am interested in buying an Audi S4 B9, so I have some questions about longevity/reliability mods:

1. Should I buy the petrol, or diesel version (Adblue concerns - disable, or buy a petrol engine)?
not sure about diesel but consider all of my answers for the petrol version.
2. Disable start/stop on the S4?
yes and use 10w-30/40 oil.
3. Upgrade the stock engine radiator/fans?
. Not necessarily never hear about fan issues.
4. Upgrade the intercooler (don't intend to tune it for more speed/performance, just want the best reliability/longevity)?
absolutely, the better the engine can breathe the better your engine will feel.
5. Upgrade the stock water pump?
not sure if there is a “upgrade” but always keep and eye out for weeps or sign of dry coolant around key areas.
6. Upgrade the stock fuel pump?
you can with the high pressure but not needed. Just use good/high octane petrol all the time.
7. Upgrade spark plugs?
yes try to get one that has a higher heat band since these engines get hot. Don’t have a p/n currently but I’m also going through this issue. And change them around every 30k.
8. Upgrade intake?
yes. See #4.
9. Any other mods that can increase efficiency, and reliability/longevity of this car?
learn about the engine, learn or memorize how it sounds or record so that the day you think you have an issue you can refer back. These engines are noisy, due to the HPFP and injectors.
10. Any mods required to make steering/handling better (read that people install drivetrain stabilizer, sway bars + endlinks)?
yes you can go crazy with suspension but some harder upgrades will compromise comfort.
Thank you very much in advance!

Kind regards

Note worthy: always be ahead of maintenance. Oil changes should be frequent and often. No longer than 5k miles.
Try your best to buy OEM or reputable OE replacement.
Don’t skimp on brakes and tires. You can go fast but can you stop?
Get rainx and good wipers.
Check the coolant reservoir often for oil intrusion etc. there are galleys that run parallel to oil and coolant and vice versa.

Just purchased one 62k miles. Stage 2 upgrade intercooler, downpipes. Sway bars AP racing brakes and I’m loving it. No issues so far, besides leaking oil filter housing gasket. 1hr long fix not hard. But Water pump and spark plugs are up next along with a ZF8 transmission flush.

Thx!

I've read that the water pump in the B9 S4 is CWA50. Would it hurt to go with CWA100, or CWA150 even?

As for the diesel version, should DPF, and Adblue be disabled immediately? Adblue is especially concerning me, with all the stories about crystallization, which then requires the Adblue tank replacement etc.
