    Possible flex pipe rattle

I have a 2014 S5, approaching 100K miles now but pretty well maintained. Sometime last year, I noticed a rattling sound around ~1100 rpm that I’ve now come to understand is likely coming from the flex pipes. https://imgur.com/a/AXX5qJL

I took it to my euro shop with concerns, and though they couldn’t pinpoint the noise, they agreed, and quoted me around $2600 to have the entire exhaust replaced with a factory system.

Took it to a nearby muffler shop with the diag, though they also couldn’t pinpoint the noise. they told me they thought it might be a loose heat shield, or something rattling further down. So they adjusted the shields, then fabbed and installed some rear mufflers. Still rattling.

Took it back to my euro shop for regular maintenance and brought the tech on a test drive. He suspected heat shields, but they couldn’t replicate the noise, so I’m back to square one.

    Thoughts?

I am cynical by nature so would immediately suspect any shop whose main option is replace. Can you find a good muffler shop what will loosen your exhaust system to tighten the heat shields and anything else that may be loose? That nearby shop that installed rear mufflers should have knocked around to find any loose part, and may give you a free inspect to check things out. Good luck.

Worth a shot. I’ll give them a ring and see if I can arrange for them to look around. If the rattle is still present, I guess I’ll ask for a good faith discount since they talked me out of new cats/flex pipes in favor of the mufflers, lol.
