If it’s anything like my C5’s there’s a little micro switch in the locking mechanism. It’s got two wires, one red and one blue. Over time it either wears out and no long actuates enough because the surface has worn down, or it gets corroded and fails internally. At this age, a lot of these have solidified grease inside and are rusty, too. You can try to take it apart, it’s not too difficult, once you finagle it out of the door.

You have two kind of lame options in my opinion:
    - Roll the dice on a used unit which can probably be found on Marketplace, a junkyard, or eBay.

-Get an aftermarket one that can be really cheaply made and fail in a few years, itself.

A few years ago I found the micro switches themselves online, but my order was canceled a few months later so I just started looking in junkyards for replacements. OE is usually best with this kind of stuff.

    Audi S4 B5 close/open door sensor

The sensor is in the latch on front doors. Rear is a switch on the quarter label side

Depending on the door, I can still possibly get it. New and genuine. Have supplied a bunch to others.

Do these sensors in the door latch also cause your interior motion sensor system to act wonky? Reason why I ask is because (this past late summer/early fall) when I had my avant locked, the alarm went off as the interior motion sensor was tripped even though I had all windows and sunroof closed. I turned on the interior motion sensor switch and the system still goes off. Now during the winter months, everything works as normal when I lock my avant.
Current: 01 A4QM avant daily driver.

    Past: 92 ABZ 100CSQM avant, 97 A6Q avant, 93 S4, 95.5 avant, 93 S4, 91 10vt CQ, 98.5 SC'd & IC'd A4QM sedan.

I’m not sure on that. I know the interior motion sensor button does go bad. I have those in stock for that reason.

The other thing that gradually goes bad, is the central locking pump. All of the above (and more) runs through it.
