Dealer price quote for trans fluid change is insane LOL

Just thought this would be an entertaining post.

I need to take my RS5 in for 60k service and inquired to see how much it would cost them to do the trans fluid change(even though they say lifetime). I figured parts+ 4-500 would be reasonable if I was too lazy to do it myself, but they said for the fluid, pan, pan bolts and some sump piece they want to change, they wanted $3600.

Seems a bit insane. So I guess i will not be lazy and buy the pan/fluid kit and do it myself.

That is insane. If you don't want to do it yourself you could take it to an established Audi/German indy shop, but yeah, no chance I'd even approach that price.

I ordered the fluid/pan and filter kit and will do it myself in the spring most likely. I still don't have 60k mi yet, so i have some time.

I asked about changing the coolant in my S5 and they said no need. It's lifetime. Frankly before I would spend thousands on something like that I would put the money to an extended warranty. Probably can't hurt to change it but that may not be of any benefit and if they are charging that much for it either they are nuts or the job takes quite a few hours to do, can't imagine the fluid cost would be more than a few hundred. I don't think there are anywide spread trans issues being common on the forums so there is that to consider. Unless there was a gasket leak or something I probably would leave it be.

I bought the ZF fluid and pan kit for $400. No fluid lasts a true lifetime. I read somewhere that Audi classifies "lifetime" as 124k miles. I can do the work myself but figured if the labor wasn't too bad I would just pay them and save myself the trouble.

I had a similar experience trying to be proactive about the transmission fluid in my S5, once they gave me that quote I said forget it. I know the parts are about $400, and there's no way the labor is $3,000. Almost like how they quoted me $1,700 for a battery in the R8. I bought a premium Odyssey Battery and did it myself for $350, including coding. 😅
