JHM R Series Clutch 5R or Southbend Stage 3

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I have a supercharged stage 1+ JHM kit on my RS4 with JHM's 3R series clutch and lightened flywheel with about 20k miles, and it is already slipping.

I am considering going to the 5R, but local mechanics here have suggested Southbend's stage 3. Anyone have any experience with either of these clutches? Southbend is considerably more expensive.

This is the route I'm going when it comes time to replace my clutch.

I reached out to them and already have gotten some answers from Mike at Ringer Racing. Prices look good too! Thanks for the suggestion.

I have the stage 5 ringer kit in mine, its a great setup that is an improvement over stock in daily and spirited driving IMO, especially after break-in.

kalanioc, let us know how that 3R clutch looks when it comes out. The clutches with mixed friction materials don’t make sense to me. The pressure on both friction surfaces is the same so wouldn’t the higher friction side get worn faster?

There is a reason for the dual compound but I don't remember and it does/do/did come in handy for some people that run them, I'm not a fan of it and prefer the same compound on both sides. If done properly it's minor differences and as usual it depends on how you drive.

The organic material offers a much smoother engagement with a more friendly friction for street driving. A full metallic disc has a much more violent engagement especially when paired with a lightweight flywheel. I am used to twin metallic disc clutches in the rally cars and it's great for racing but you don't want to daily that.
If you are dumping the clutch on every launch then definitely go for a full metallic disc but also note that they wear fast and the metal shavings get stuck in the pressure plate unlike the organic material. We need to pull the racing clutches out every season to cleanup the shavings...
