Anyone Have to Replace Water Pump/Thermostat Housing Yet?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I went to check my coolant yesterday and freaked out since it appeared low. I googled a lot of things about what leaks first on the B9 TFSI 2.0T 4 cylinder cars and came across the thermostat/water pump housing assembly being a very weak spot. Before diving in to do the repair i noticed my coolant level was actually normal and not below the add line, must of been the sun that caused a shadow.

Watching videos on how to replace this thing it seems the EA888 engine in VW Golf GTI's and A3's, A4's and A5's all have the same issue. Curious to know if anyone has had this thing leak on them and what mileage? My coolant level has been getting lower very very slowly, typically requiring a top off every 5,000 miles when i change the oil. Some videos i found online had 2017 A4's requiring the repair at like 55,000 miles.

2019 RS5 Sportback. Leak started happening a couple of months ago; it was causing a turbo underboost/limp mode issue with the turbos because a vacuum line was being fouled by the leak. A local shop cleared the line and I'm taking the car in next Thursday to replace the pump, solenoid and requisite gaskets. Car has ~45k miles on it. For further reference, a friend of mine with the same car had his pump go out around the same mileage. The shop said they're seeing more and more of these across the Audi lineup.

yes different from the 2.0L but RS5 and S5 use the same pump.....regardless either one will need to be replaced at some stage, the 2.0T ones are covered under a lawsuit/extended warranty, im sure the 2.9/3.0T wont be far behind....
Stage 1 more than you RS3

I just traded my '17 A4 with only 36k miles. I loved that car, but the thermostat/water pump was replaced twice during my ownership. I used an Audi indie shop and the owner showed me the old part that was replaced. It's all about the cheap parts that were used. I also had my reservoir replaced and the coupling to the thermostat/water pump. The coolant leaking happened pretty often.

I still traded for another Audi because IMO the repairs are still worth driving a great car.

Yes, this is covered under warranty and if you happen to be out of warranty and have it replaced at an Audi dealership Audi corporate will reimburse you. Audi corporate twice responded to me that I hadn't submitted the proper backup, even though I provided repair records and pictures. I think it was because I had it done at an indie shop. Be sure to have an Audi dealership do the work.

The lawsuit seemed to be people trying to get money back if the leak occurred prior to 2022. Does it say anything what happened post 2022?

@Gregory_Tolson - Not quite sure what you are asking - if you paid for replacement prior to a specific date in 2022, you needed to submit receipts and other docs in order to get reimbursed. After that specific date you get an extended warranty up to 8 years after the original in-service date and a dealer would perform the repair work

If you paid for repairs after that specific date at a non-dealer, I'm guessing you'd have to have a discussion directly with Audi to determine if you would get any reimbursement.
