    A6 Competition DPF issues

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Hello.

Bought my second C7 but first bitdi/competition 3 weeks ago. Having some issues with DPF.
First DPF warning came the day i bought the car about 4 hours on my drive home. Drove for about 10-15 minutes on 3k rpm and the light went away. 6-7 days later the light came back on. Same procedure.
And now again this weekend. Total 3 times in about 20 days.

Last successful regeneration was 22 days ago, 2 days before i bought the car.

Any tips what i can do to prevent this? Normally the car is used 10km (12 minute drive) to work and same back home with some other trips in the store in the same area.

Will taking the DPF out and cleaning it help me here? Or a forced regeneration?

    Attached soot levels here aswell.

Shorter trips will result in higher soot levels and triggering regens. Being in Norway, I'm going to assume a DPF delete is completely out of the question due to regulations/laws there. There is a fellow on the telegram chat that lives in northern EU as you do, perhaps he could offer insight.

Yes, that is correct. DPF delete will give other troubles in the long run. My previous c7 204ps gave the DPF light twice in six years. Same driving pattern with the competition, now in my third code in 3 weeks. Havent had vcds connected while the car throws DPF light. Do i have to drive the car longer when i drive it hard to blow the soot out. I have till now just driven it hard till the light shuts off.

I'm curious how a dpf delete would cause more problems. For short trips, I'd remove it, go on long drives at least once a week, or get a car without a dpf

It will cause problems with MOT and gas emission, so its actully illegal to delete it here in norway. With a proper map it could be undetectable, but the technican/controller wil still fail the MOT during inspection.

My experience with the emissions junk is that as the SCR becomes restricted from increasing levels of crystallized DEF, this will increase the rate of accumulation of soot in the DPF... How does the DEF injector look?

Post full scan. Make sure you don't have any engine controller faults, as correct regens depend on the proper operation of a lot of sensors and actuators.

Wanted to check if the exhaust gas temperature sensors are working properly since its not self regenerating. I have 192+c on exhaust gas temperature sensor 3, but exhaust gas model temperature 3 shows -20? Could it be a faulty sensor? Not sure what the difference in those two measurments here.

might wanna look up truck shops that specialize in liberating cars from their EPA compliant systems.... if you follow the news lately looks like there won't be enforcement in the near future

Guess you are referring to the US? Havent heard any about the topic here in Norway. Doesn’t really help with my regeneration/dpf problem today anyways 😅

He's in norway sounds like not possible. FYI you don't need a shop to liberate these vehicles... Such work has always been grossly overpriced. Online sources charging the price of a high quality catback system for some empty pipes that you could have made for 20% of what they ask (or less). Computer work that, if not accompanied by a tune is a small modification that you can find someone on the internet to do for free... The cost of a delete is less than what you get in scrap for the DPF and SCR if you sell to an online buyer!

Looking at your scans, you shouldn't be to the point where your DPF is suffering from age-related issues. I suppose it is possible, but I doubt it...

Where was this vehicle purchased from? Used car dealer? Is it possible that anyone has done work on it before? One thing that comes to mind (especially given that you have no codes) is to make sure that there have been no modifications to the ECM in order to conceal problems. Those who are on the tuning forums will know what I am talking about; There seems to be no shortage of people, especially in the likes of turkey/eastern europe/etc who will modify ECM's (delete DTC's from the map such that the DTC can no longer be set) in order to make a profit on a malfunctioning vehicle. When in doubt, always flash with stock software image. If DTC's suddenly appear after reflash, then you know what the last guy did. Not saying that this is the issue with your car, but I would be looking at ownership history and region it was owned in.

For those "model" temperatures, I don't have a C7 TDI vehicle to compare, but those model temps are not measured temps so I suspect that -20C may be perfectly normal...

140000km on the clock so it should be end of life on the DPF yet. Bought the car from a guy that imported it to Norway in 2019. He said the car has never been modified. Service history from audi dealer. He thought the timing belt was changed on a service while looking through the service book (3.0 has timing chain) so he wasn't a typically car guy imo. Felt like a trustworthy guy but who knows.

I feel like a DPF clean will fix the problem temporary since it hasnt had a successful regeneration in a while. Tried to inspect and clean the DEF injector today but i couldnt find my jack pad so i had to order a new one so i actully can manage to get under it.

Definitely take a look at that injector. I have seen the SCR's on 3.0TDI clog up with crystallized DEF and result in an incredible soot load on the DPF as a result. After clearing the SCR restriction I was able to successfully do a regent from VCDS and get the soot load back down to nominal on one vehicle but no idea how it performed after that. My experience is you typically get a minimum of 120k miles/200k kilometers from these DPF before they are done but I don't know if you guys use the same design DPF as we do - IIRC due to the large geographical area of the USA the typical driver is driving nearly twice the distance of EU drivers every year so they may have given us different emissions equipment as a result of that!

I think you're making up problems that you don't have.
Your readiness monitors have all passed... there's no codes for DPF or anything.
Soot load needs to get to 27g in order to have regens happen.
Your battery is junk. Replace that because these modern cars hate not having sufficient juice.
The BEM will shut down most of the car to keep it starting and such, but it will result in other issues.
You can pull the electrical history file and analyze it if you really want to know how old your battery is, etc.
There are also IDEs for just a ton of things in the controllers, so have a look (when and if you get another MIL) at the ones with regards to regens, De-NOx, DEF usage, etc.

Your daily driving pattern is NOT good or sufficient for this type of car. You need to get it out and let it stretch its legs once a week. It needs to reach full operating temp, heat up all the emissions components, etc.
Short tripping it will create lots of problems.

Here's a list of what I typically look at on my vehicle as part of my routine scans to keep an eye on the emissions stuff.
    Code:
                    Address 01: Engine (4G0 907 401 N)

    14:22:05
IDE00432 Particle filter: time since last regeneration 77719 s
IDE00433 Particle filter: oil ash volume 0.04 l
IDE00434 Particle filter: soot mass calculated 26.58 g
IDE00435 Particle filter: soot mass measured 5.92 g
IDE00436 Particle filter: kilometers since last regeneration 882477 m
IDE01922 Vehicle distance driven 141876 km
IDE03386 Long-term adaptation of reduction agent dosage 0.98
IDE05857 DPF statistics: current measured charging rate 0.0310 g/km
IDE06983-MAS05392 Diesel emissions re-treatment: status-Average distance between DPF regenerations 343 km
IDE07197 Average reducing agent since lest filling 0.80 l/1000 km

Are you sure his readiness tests have passed? I thought 0 for readiness tests in VCDS meant not passed and 1 meant passed...

You can easily validate what I'm saying on your own vehicle if you want. Look at your readiness, and assuming that all is well, it should be all zeros. Then go and erase all codes, even if you don't have any (or just erase the codes under the engine controller), then check your readiness again, and you'll see NOT zeros.

Ok, not it's worse. Drove the car to the store today. I've been driving it in dynamic the last couple of weeks. Got DPF warning light in the dash again right before i was home. Had the car idle for about 30 minutes home while connecting VCDS and try a force regen. Now the glow plug light is flashing with a engine light. And the car in in limp mode.

    Pulling these codes:

Sounds like it is time for more diagnosis! In reference to my previous experience with the CNRB engine, I have one which accumulated soot extremely rapidly due to the SCR being severely restricted from DEF. I would not try to clear learned values and force a regen until you get to the bottom of this. You can't get a camera into the SCR due to the swirl plate that is just past the DEF injector but I would at least take a look at the injector to see how dirty/caked up with DEF it is. If the SCR is restricted I am not sure if there is any way to effectively clear it. Keep in mind that I am not greatly experienced with these engines but your symptoms (rapid soot accumulation to the point of standing regen being blocked, limp mode, etc) are extremely similar to what I last encountered with a partially blocked SCR. I am not saying that your SCR is definitely restricted, but I did find quite a few threads for similar vehicles (not Audi 3.0TDI specific) with similar issues of rapid soot accumulation due to SCR restriction.

Do you have a manifold pressure sensor? I knew for sure my SCR was blocked when I connected a manifold pressure sensor to the downstream DPF pressure sensor hose. I don't recall values but even at idle I was seeing a notably positive pressure on that downstream side of the DPF (actually, on both sides, but I was measuring downstream since I knew the DPF itself was already heavily sooted). At ~2000RPM the pressure climbed rapidly at which point I removed the SCR and pressures returned to what I would expect in an exhaust system, proving that the SCR was indeed blocked (without actually being able to see the upstream side of the catalyst due to the swirl plate blocking that view).

Well, I don't know what to say, I am not experienced enough with the 3.0TDI to recommend further testing. I know rapid sooting can simply be caused by a lack of regeneration/short trips, but I don't know how short those trips would have to be for this platform nor what to expect as far as soot accumulation rate. It seems that if you were having trouble with the turbo or injectors there would be other evidence of this, same should go for the EGR. All I can think of is pressure/flow testing to verify that you don't have a restriction downstream from the DPF (i.e. in the SCR) resulting in poor operation of the DPF...

OP, did you lookup (and post) the values I showed you up above in #17?
What codes did you have before you erased them?
There are specific pre-requisites that need to be met when attempting to trigger a forced\service regen, etc.

I have posted above my fault codes when the car went in limp mode. They came straight back when i tried to clear them. (post#22)
It's over 100km to nearest audi dealer, so i had the car in at a local shop where i know one of the mechanics has worked at VAG before. They tried to force regen it but their computer crashed, so they said it wasnt a success. Their machanic was sic so the car stood there for 3 days (without any update) before i got frustrated and got the key and left while i said i would put the car to another shop instead. When i started the car the limp mode was gone, so i'm not sure if they have reset the values or not. I went for a longer trip in high rpm to buy some time before the dpf fault message comes back again.

Tried to do a force regen myself but gets malfunction message straight away, so something is blocking it.

One of the test modes will let you clear the learned values for the soot load, but be warned that past a certain soot load I believe it is hazardous to attempt a forced regen... You will get that DPF glowing red hot and I've seen this melt the underbody plastic on a 3.0TDI vehicle before.... :D

His loads are not an issue as per values posted.
However, his DEF dosage is.... 1 is baseline... so that tells me he's recently reset the learnt value, or there's an issue with the system and it's not functioning correctly.
He needs to run output tests on the DEF system to ensure it is functioning as per design.

I'd also suggest logging all EGTs\lambda\NOx sensors to ensure none are lazy or dead, as any of those component failures will cause issues.

When attempting a forced regen (once again, not sure why, as your DPF stats don't indicate that one is required), there are pre-requisites to be met prior to the controller allowing you to tell it what to do.

Drove the car to another shop this week. Stated that the differential pressure sensor measurings was abit off so we decided to change it.
After the sensor swap he manage to force a regen. Success, for a few hours. Now i get check engine light and pulling these codes:

-147 pha on the new sensor. After some searching around i decided to reset the differential sensor values and do a new adaptation, but i cant find adaptation in the list with vcds.
Guessing the new sensor could be faulty? The PN on the sensor doesnt say on the recipe so not sure if they used OEM sensor.

If it's not an OEM sensor I'm surprised it even worked right out of the box... The china trash sensors/actuators are being sold under MANY brands in the USA (For instance, on Rock Auto, the same amazon/ebay trash sensor is being sold under names like standard motor products, ultra power, united motor products, vemo, gpd, uro parts, and the list goes on) and I've had such bad luck with them that I will install a used OEM sensor from the junkyard before I'll install that "new" china garbage xD

Your ash value seems suspect. Sorry I missed this earlier.... I was distracted by your desire to run regens, and was only looking at soot values trying to understand why.

This leads me to suspect that the previous owner had possibly filled up the DPF to capacity, and potentially "reset" its learnt values without actually replacing the DPF, and then sold it to you as a "good vehicle".
I'm jumping to this conclusion because you keep getting these DTCs, and your pressure reading offset is just crazy!
If I were you, I'd attempt to get a legit "service history" record from the dealership. They shouldn't need to see your vehicle to provide that, and it will most likely be free.
Once you obtain that, review it carefully, and if you don't see "dpf replaced" in the last year or so, this could be a problem
Definitely also only use an OEM sensor, and check its reading with Key On, Engine OFF.... this will eliminate the potentially clogged DPF from the equation and validate the sensor as reading correctly.

Update on the case: The non OEM differential sensor got swapped with a new OEM sensor. The workshop (Toyota) did a few force regen but the DPF warning still came back. Then i got the car transported to nearest Audi workshop. They did a regen and now it's good.
If it's Toyota's diag-tools or working procedures that caused the DPF warning to come back or if Audi got other methods im not sure of, but now it doesn't throw DPF error.
Got Audi to double check the state and values of the DPF and they concluded that the DPF is now fine and didn't need replacement.

Have since then driven the car 250km in various distances without any issue. Hoping i now can finally enjoy the car.

I wonder what diagnostic tool toyota was using. It seems that my Autels can't force a regen but maybe I'm wrong, I usually just use VCDS on VAGs unless I'm adding keys.

hi, I m from RO and have a BiTDI allroad, first thing when I bought the car an year ago I ve sent my DPF to the cleaning guys - Attention not with water! there are services who are running 700C for 24H (basically like the car would do but for a whole lotaa time), then I just put the DPF back, I never saw the DPF light on the dash. However, what I missed to do was resetting the DPF counter. I have OBD11 and I constantly check on that, when it starts the regen I m just going on the highway for the duration.

    The data:

Everytime the calculated mass is at around 10, the measured is at around 16 and it starts, when it starts you can see that the car shifts the 2nd gear in 2k RPM instead of 1.4-1.6 as usual.

Almost always in RO the last regen was at 35Liters of fuel
In Austria this winter was at around 50L cause there I drove mostly on highways.

When it starts regening, you will see the measured and calculated going lower about 0.1/2G /second. I drive on the highway until the last regen was 0L ago and the calculated is left at 0.3G and measured at around 5G.

I am planning to send my DPF to the cleaning guys every 2 years and next time I ll reset the stats after that as well.

    Hope this helped.

BTW, the price in RO for the cleaning is 80euros.
