    Turb0's RS5 Build Log

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Took me 6 or 7 months of hunting.. but I finally picked up a B9 RS5... 65k miles, which is a bit higher than what I wanted- but the Previous Owner took... insanely good care of this car(with records!), and also put on a full body satin PPF. This build will probably be _very_ simple... but I do plan to go put in a fairly high end audio system to replace the garbage B&O system later this year.. already have most everything but a MOST150 box.

Already have the first basic mods ready to be put in this week.

congrats on the ride! theres a pretty in-depth rs5 build log / half guide on diymobileaudio for your aftermarket system. i think nav-tv got bought by mobridge so i'd look into their stuff when it comes time to get the audio interface.

Welcome and beautiful B9 you got there. Look forward to following your build, everyone starts out with the intention of doing a “simple” build till the mod bug really bites lol

Yeah that's probably jimmy dee's haha - I'm on DIYMA as well. I'll be doing something similar in terms of amp layout- but I do want more bass- coming from a car that had 2 brahmas on 2kw... A single 10" Utopia M won't cut it for me.
Well that didn't quote right for me... still figuring out this forums I guess...

Starting off small... 034 anti-buffeting guard things. I wanted these to match as best I could to the black opti-package.. The closest colour I found after searching was Audi's Brilliant Black. It's not perfect, but blends in a lot better than the unpainted pieces.

    No Guards:

Unpainted piece placed against the doorframe:

Painted and Installed - this was a 1k I had mixed up at a local shop - The next post will have photos of this installed from a wider angle:

This wasn't something I planned to do so soon- but I couldn't help myself. Next mod was spacers + wheel locks on the car. Worked with Mops@Nemesis to get these ordered - 12.5mm front, 15mm rear. They make a _much_ better difference in person, as I can't take photos to save my life most of the time.

They help minimize the wind buffeting with the windows down.. I do think they did helped some.. and they were cheap at 14$ for the pair

I've never noticed wind noise. All of the tracks around here require windows up. You've seen this to be an issue on this car? Is something wrong with your mirrors?

I drive down with the windows down and the sunroof open _a lot_ being in Southern California.. so it's noticeable for me due to that. This car has not been tracked(only had it for a week) and I don't know if I'll have time to track it.. we'll see.

It's much better- but the cheapest I could find aerosol paint was 40$.. and even if I had my own spray gun it was about that much.. guess it'll be good for other touch ups or other projects - maybe if/when I do a proper amp rack.

The one thing I have noticed is this car very easily goes up to 208-210F temps while driving normally.. and the fans go for a solid 5-10 minutes after I park.. Makes me think some sort of intercooler/radiator upgrade will be the next big moneyspend here... and maybe a beefier battery

Next mod up is the 034Motorsport Transmission insert (034 pls sponsor you made me poor).

This has been seen countless times before. It definitely does smooth out the lower gears in comfort mode- the jerkiness was something I noticed immediately, and was glad I pre-ordered this.

    The stock flimsy bracket:

Side-by-side of the stock bracket vs the 034 billet insert. I used a rubber mallet to very gently tap it into place:

Installed w/ new hardware. Torqued to vaguely the right spec.. unfortunately I could not find the reducer for my torque wrench, so I'll be revisiting this soon:

    Some more goodies...:

First up is that small box though... I am preemptively replacing the PCV hosing with 034 Motorsport's kit. Very happy I did this as the OEM piece was extremely brittle, and broke apart with not too much pulling on it...

I was able to get this done in under 30 minutes... but it did help that I didn't care about the original hose being in one piece after it snapped the first time.

You can kind of spy it in that above photo- but I also did the X34 intake. I will eventually(once it's in stock and my wallet recovers) be doing the superduper intake portion. Intake noise is now audible from within the cabin. I did want to do the S34 intake but was far too impatient.

    Stock Intake:

    X34 Intake:

All-in-all- it took me about 20 minutes to install..

I actually did this last Wednesday- but I threw the 034 Motorsport Stage 1 ECU and Stage 2 TCU tune on the car. Pretty sizable difference- primarily in the shifting department. e85 soon:tm: - no HPFP for now... that'll be later as I have some more billet magic and a MMI swap happening this week.

    MMI Screen Upgrade:

I have never been a fan of the Chinese headunit replacements- I've had bad experiences with them in the past and with helping others- and I don't want to compromise the MOST150 Bus into the NAV-TV unit. Any competition usage will be through my FiiO, but Daily Usage will still be Apple Carplay. As such, swapping in a newer MMI screen was the best option for me. I don't mind not having a touch screen, as I've already gotten used to the jog wheel In all reality- this box may also just choose to die- but it'll be easy to go back to the 8.3" screen, and I'll still have music/nav via my phone and the gauge cluster.

    Parts List:
MMI Screen - 8W2919620 - I believe my unit came out of a wrecked A4 or A5.There are several screen variations depending on the manufacturer. The screen I received was an Innolux unit, as was my previous one. The Dipswitches used may change if you get a different OEM screen.
    MMI Bracket - 8W1857735
    MMI Trim Piece 1 - 8W1-857-966 - 6PS --- Matte Grey-ish
    MMI Trim Piece 1 - 8W1-857-967 - 6PS --- Matte Grey-ish
    MMI Trim Piece 2 - 8W1-857-968 - 6PS --- Matte Grey-ish

    Screen Decoder/Upscaler - https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804015629628.html

Most everything I've gathered from this thread on Audiworld: https://www.audiworld.com/forums/a4-...3034848/page5/

P.S - Sorry for the Instagram text on some photos.

First was taking out the OEM 8.3" screen. This involves removing the A/C controls, and the A/C vents.

Next was cutting off some alignment tabs that do not exist on the new version of this connector. I unfortunately only grabbed an after photo- but a before photo can be found on the thread linked above:

Then- I hooked the decoder box up the the factory harness and the new MMI screen. The photo below is the dipswitch config I ended up on. It is not what the aliexpress manufacturer recommends- but one of the better ones from the thread above.

Installing is slightly different than removal. When you get to putting the trim pieces back around the MMI screen- you have to unscrew the MMI screen from the carrier via the two torx screws used to screw the screen into the new bracket, shift it forward, then put the trim pieces on, then shift the screen back and screw it back in before the final trim piece. Hopefully that helps for anyone who does this.

Just need to clean some of this goop off the screen's back.. it's not visible from the seating position but still annoying.

So what exactly do you gain by completing this switch/upgrade? Is the touchscreen functionality there? Wireless carplay?

Just the bigger screen. No touchscreen or wireless carplay since I don't want to swap out the full MMI system. The upscaler box works pretty well- there's no blurriness at all.

So I had planned this post to be about the rear subframe and rear differential billet inserts from 034Motorsport. However, I was unable to get the right leverage myself with the limited jack-height I have. I took it over to the guys at Kormodiv and in their inspection- they discovered my water pump was toast and was leaking into the vacuum system. Not happy about this as I have previous records of the dealership pulling a turbo to identify a coolant leak a few months prior to buying the car, but it is what it is. They were able to get all of the damaged components replaced. Kicking myself a little for tuning the car so soon as that nullified the 3 month warranty I did have with the car- it was extremely doubtful that I would be able to get them to do the warranty work with the tune done.

Just got the car back today- and it may or may not have a tank of e85 in it now...

Yeah I don’t know if you have a B9 or B9.5 but what a PIA those diff mount inserts were on my ‘21. These bolts especially, since it appears those brackets immediately in the way of extracting each bolt didn’t appear to exist on any of the instructions or DIYs I looked up smh… that and this additional bracket that needed to come off since I couldn’t get to a couple of the bolts with the car up on the quick jacks smh… one of those “this should only take me a couple hours” turns into half my day type projects smh… glad to be done with this one for sure. Sorry about your coolant leak/water pump failure. I really need to find a good video to inspect and diagnose this so I can check for it regularly and catch it early :/ I’ll be ripping the entire front end apart soon so would love to get to it while I’m there as a preventative.

Appreciate this!!! Now I at least have a decent idea of where I’m looking, see that will be so easy to reach with the front end all torn apart, I wish someone would make a billet one to replace the failure prone ones we’ve been cursed with for a decade at least smh… I’m doing the oil filter housing too while everything is off.

Well technically the item with the pink coolant dried on it is the coolant shut off valve. The tstat is right nearby though.

There's that, and a valve on the passenger's side bank that also leaks.

Got the car back from Kormodiv- I'll be taking it light on mods while I recover from the surprise repair. I have been on e85 for a bit- and it's been pretty fun.. the constant stops for fuel are something I could live without though hah.

I swapped from the Dealer used 0W-30 to Mobil1 Euro 0W-40. Seems to be very well regarded on BITOG and elsewhere. I might go down the motul route later, but from what I've been seeing, the 3100 is nothing special, it's that top tier stuff that's actually esther based that's special. Alongside the oil change, I threw in the billet oil filter housing from 034motorsport. The extractor makes this pretty easy. I have also swapped(atleast the front) brake pads to Brembo GG-rated Ceramics so there's no more insane amount of brake dust. They bite slightly more than OEM but not much of a difference otherwise. Seeing as I'm not doing anything crazy with this car, I opted to not go for something like iSweeps or Porterfields.
