    A quart a day - oil leak

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Alright so I’m screwed. I leak a quart a day.

Car: 2010 Audi a4 2.0T Stage 2 IE tune 2.0 Tfsi 3” catless down pipe.
Replaced valve cover gasket front timing cover oil cap vacuum pump gasket, and more.

I need help figuring this out. I get blue/black smoke that comes from the rear of the exhaust, although can’t figure out if it’s a bad PCV or piston rings. Car has 121K miles. Stage 2 pop and bang tune (ECU). Fault codes are related to ECM failure

Burning or leaking? If it's leaking, it'll be obvious. Sounds more like it's burning.

If you think it might be the PCV, just replace it with a new one and find out. Is that an original black cap, or is that some third-party unit? If you're still black cap, you could try the white cap, but that needs a ECM update to work correctly.

But at that rate of burn, yeah, it's not the PCV. Your rings are likely more than gone. Or the turbo oil seals are completely gone. But those are the only two places I could see the oil dumping into the exhaust at such a rate.

Sounds like you have a number of issues going on, but it's not like you've gone easy on the engine either. Probably time to fully pull it apart. I wonder if you turn the exhaust upwards, if a puddle would drain out. :-)

Yeah definitely haven’t been taking it easy. Where do you think I should start lol. Audi checked it out couldn’t figure it out. I don’t want to dump money into it. Would you recommend me do a compression test to find out if compression is good first and see if rings are bad? Or buy yes I replaced the cap with an autozone one to see if it was the seal.

I put a response on the thread in the B8 A4 forum, probably better to work it there, more relevant eyes most likely.

There's a lot of oil all over it, so you might have both leak and consumption issues. Oil out the exhaust is definitely excess consumption. Part would be to clean it and try and assess where the external leak is originating. Compression test is going to test the compression rings, I doubt it'll say anything about the condition of the oil scrapper ring (is it clogged up). If it is consuming that level of oil, you'd think the plugs would show it. You could also take the hoses off the ends of the intercooler, there should be some oil, not a whole lot. A lot might be a PCV issue.

Where would you start to tackle the biggest issue first? Pull the hose off intercooler first? Also I think my turbo is blown as it stutters bad or almost cuts off during hard acceleration/going off the line. I believe maybe the turbo is blown or clogged and so it’s shooting oil?

most of the oil consumption issues that originate with this engine are either because of the poor piston ring design or faulty pcv valve. I had the same issue where it was both leaking and consuming oil because of the faulty pcv. I had multiple external leaks and i had oil coming out of my intercooler piping. Faulty pcv causes too much crankcase pressure which is likely why you have an abundance of external and internal leaks. I was able to fix mine by addressing the pcv and replacing any external leaks it caused (valve covers, water pump, etc;). This is likely also why you are having turbo issues (assuming you aren’t using IE’s crackle file)
