9 times out of 10 it's a blown turbo that causes a puff of white smoke on startup, and white smoke when you're accelerating. I've had five cars with a 1.8T, and not a single one had issues with valve stem seals/smoke.

Valve stem seals that go are usually a puff of smoke on deceleration. When I repaired a head on a smoking B5, the seal was floating up and down the valve. It was no longer seated on the guide. Replaced them and no more smoke out the tailpipe. If you are getting smoke when getting on the throttle then it’s most likely not the stem seals.

Smell where? From engine bay or tail pipe? If engine bay then it’s most likely valve cover and cam tensioner gaskets from dripping oil on the manifold and/or exhaust. If you don’t have a good or missing seal between the fire wall and rain tray, smell will get into the cabin via the cabin air intake under the rain tray.
