Is Additional Maintenance Needed after HPFP Cam Follower Failure?

I have a magnetic oil drain plug and on the last oil change it didn't want to come out because a piece of metal was stuck to it that couldn't come through the hole. There was also randomly longer startup times on cold starts. So I checked the HPFP cam follower now and the end is basically gone, only the tube was left so I replaced it. Both the oil filter and drain plug were clean with no debris, just like always.

Now I'm wondering if I need to still inspect the chain tensioner for damage or if it's relatively safe, considering that the piece did come down into the pan.

Vehicle has ~172k miles and at ~157k miles almost 2 years ago the cam follower was replaced with a Standard Motor Products one as preventative maintenance. Engine is stock and runs well. Oil gets changed every 3 to 3½ thousand miles.

I didn't know that the cam follower needs to be changed so frequently. In your experiences, how long does the INA or OEM one last? The cam lobe looks a bit scratched but feels smooth.

The car is what? The engine is what? We could random guess this is a B7 with a BPG or BWT, but that would be assuming. If it is such, then no, there's nothing you do but replace the cam follower and put it back together. You would want to inquire in the B7 forum what kind of lifespan owners are seeing from the cam follower. I certainly would have used OE or INA. OE = original equipment, the piece Audi uses and sells, ie the Audi supply chain. OEM = original equipment maker, so whoever actually makes the piece Audi uses and provides them to the Audi supply chain, but these are ones that maker supplies through their own aftermarket supply chain. INA is likely one of the OEM, if not the only one. I would say your "Standard Motor Products" one is just third-party junk (not all third-party are junk, eg Febi, but many are China junk).

From the new and improved Google search AI, "The cam follower in an Audi B7 should be inspected every 10,000–20,000 miles,". Wow, that's a pita. To have to dismount the pump annually just to check that thing.

Current p/n is 06D109309J, but that just replaced the rev C a few months ago. So you're going to find C out there in the wild. And I wouldn't hesitate to use INA as a sub for the Audi at only 25% of the price (since it's very likely INA is the OEM).
    INA, $19 - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...ine-06d109309c
    OE, $72 - https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/aud...sat-06d109309d
Notice the FCP pages have advice on the follower inspection interval as well.

You're more likely to get direct B7 owner view of the question, since it is specific to B7 owners, at least in the US, as the B6 here stuck with the old 1.8T MPI rather than the new at that time 2.0 FSI.

Thanks for the info. I should have added that it's the BWT engine in a 2007 A4
