    Resonator Delete on 2013 S5 3.0 B8.5 Quattro automatic

Hi. Just got the car and it now owns me:) I found many threads about front resonators, mid muffler and rear resonators delete. Goal is not sound but weight reduction and possible better flow. Please share any thoughts on deleting just the two rear resonators, replacing with straight piping. I believe the cats are sensitive to changing back pressure, which is why I don't want to delete the fronts. Car is stock with only CAI. 126k on it. Thanks.

Cats are weak an wear out by 100k in general. I'm sure if you had yours inspected (inspection camera inserted through the front O2 sensor) you would find a lot of damage. I did removed my Resonators. It's a V6 so regular sound isn't real agressive but when you really lay onto the throttle and wind it out a little it screams pretty well. Removing the Resonators only slightly increased the idle and cruise exhaust noise, nothing obtrusive and I'd highly recommend it. I just bought a piece of Stainless straight pipe and used a set of Audi OEM band clamps. There is a little weight savings but then it is down low weight, about as low as you can get but any weight savings is a plus.

By the same reasoning, the center large muffler must be worn out also. To confirm then, did you remove both front and back pair of resonators, or just one pair? Thanks for your input.

Mine is a 2013 S5 and it only has (had) one center Resonator and the two rear mufflers. The center resonator has two inlets for the Downpipes and two outlets to the two separate rear mufflers.

My mistake, I am confusing 'resonator' and 'muffler.' Deleting the center Resonator is the way to go. Thanks again.

I've heard it both ways. The center piece being called the muffler and the 2 at the rear being called resonators. I removed the center "muffler" and installed a non-resonated x-pipe. It is a bit louder than stock, but there is a bit of drone in the 1800-2200 or so RPM range. I've had it this way for almost 5 years now (one of the first mods I did), so it's certainly not unbearable. And it is definitely noticeable at higher RPMs. I've considered changing to a resonated x-pipe and swapping the rear resonators/mufflers (whatever you want to call them), but haven't pulled the trigger.

I don't think this is correct - catalytic converters wear out because they get melted at very high temps while they chemically treat the exhaust gas. The resonators and mufflers manage the sound of the exhaust - they're just "dumb" metal where the catalytic is doing some exotic work with $$$ metals.

Yeah, good catch. Unfortunately for me, my entire system probably needs to be replaced. Just want a low cost mod to improve it while it lasts.

It's a great car - enjoy it! I deleted the center resonator/muffler on my 2014 RS5 and the car sounds pretty tame, until it's angry and it gets loud - it's kind of awesome.
