FS: Audi B5 Cactus Avant Project Cars (Cactus A4 Avant & S4 Sedan)

For sale is a pair of Audi B5 cars. The first is a 1 of 16 1999 Audi A4 Avant in Cactus Green that originally had a 2.8L engine and 5ZF trans; the second car is a 2001 Audi S4 sedan with Onyx interior and a 6MT transmission that was meant to be the mechanical donor for the Cactus Avant to become an S4. Well a few years later the project hasn’t really progressed and I just want to cut ties with it before scrapping them to get my garage back.

• No engine or transmission and the front subframe is dropped with no front strut towers installed
• Full interior bad DIS and no radio code
• 1 Key

• The box sitting on the roof rails is a rust free front subframe from Arizona
• Also have a box full of new control arms for the front and a box of NLA goodies from RMode like a trunk vac hose, new cowl hardware and a new legacy style S4 badge all of which will be included in the sale.

Open to reasonable offers to get my garage back. I can get the S4 rolling in about 30 minutes but at least need to get the front struts back on the avant and maybe the old front subframe again to get it rolling onto a trailer. I’d rather see these go to a good home than a scrape yard which I have thought and talked about but haven’t been able to follow through with yet.

Also included in the sale of this pair of B5s is a working Bentley Publishing CD-ROM repair manual on an old XP laptop with all of the internet configurations taken off so it all works as it should. It’s not as robust as I had expected originally but gives you a good idea of whatever you need to do to get your project or maintenance done. The laptop has to stay plugged in as the battery is dead but you can set it up in the garage and go to town being that it doesn’t need internet. I’ll include a wired keyboard and mouse to help you out too.

I plan to spend some time over the next week or so getting the S4 at least back into a rolling state, maybe been even fill her with fluids and get her running again. My questions are as follows:

1) Would the silver S4 sedan be of interest to anyone on its own if it’s at least a full roller? If it’s a running?

2) Would the cactus avant be of interest to anyone on its own if I get it rolling? I’m not planning on full reassembly, just the front struts & enough of the front original subframe/suspension to keep anything from distorting when moved.


I’m trying to move as fast as possible here because our space is running out with 3 Audis, a VW Guan, a Macan, and with my Mom in town this weekend who just picked up a brand new XC60 from full Xpel PPF, ceramic coating in and out, piano black ppf, and legal ceramic tint (70%) to keep the UV light down (NY) so we have a full garage and I’m playing musical cars with the 3-4 outside. Thank god my MGB isn’t here too, but I hope this highlights that I’m ready to move and ready to talk to serious buyers although I understand not wanting to take on someone’s project of bagged and tagged parts.

Of note; if I split the cars, the avant would get the laptop manual but I only have 1 rain tray cowl and battery cover so that would end up on the S4 being a more complete car. Vacuum hose parts and badging go with the avant as well.

These cars or this project doesn’t seem to be gaining traction so I contacted a local euro dismantling company yesterday about the pair as inventory for their business. We’ll see what happens this week. Please make any reasonable offers soon because I’m ready to get these out of here regardless of me eating some money on the purchase of the project.

IMO split them up and take whatever you are offered for Avant. Get the S4 at least running and driving would be ideal. Doing that I could see you getting close to what your asking.

I don’t think you’re necessarily incorrect with your thoughts here but the number of PMs I have about these cars in their current state or with a minimal amount of effort being put in tells me there’s at least some interest; but that said, I do think the timing seems to be off with it being winter.

We’ll see what comes of it - I mentally flip-flop about selling everyday now that my B8.5 is gone and I’m left without a 3 pedal car but then again I want my garage back and I’m glad to not be playing musical cars anymore, so realistically the right opportunity just needs to come along.

The price is obo as well and many have said they have spent more than twice the ask to complete a similar project. If come mid-March I still have the cars and no progress has been made, I’ll probably start reassembly of the S4 and sell them off individually. Worst case scenario, I decided to gift the avant to a buddy over calling a scrapper.

It rolls once I put the wheels back on and tighten the axel bolts or replace them. All that’s been really done to the car is prep work to remove the engine and trans - ie disconnect all electrical connectors, remove the intake, the intake manifold, the y pipe, drain the oil & coolant (trans is full), pull the exhaust that’s sitting next to the car, disconnect the radiator upper and lower hoses, and get the front carrier ready to remove (2 remaining bolts). Honestly it would probably take me a warm day to get her back together and running again which I’ll probably do come mid March if there’s no interest in the pair. As the the sedan alone, I’d probably ask $5k OBO expecting that prospective buyers will negotiate down. Most of what is being bought here is the S4 while the avant is a basically a shell with full interior but in a more desirable color.

Sorry I missed your question yesterday, we have been traveling today for a quick snowboard trip out to Vail & Beaver Creek. I’m open to input on the price(s) or the cars themselves. Thanks!

A little bump for 2 buyers backing out yesterday and a third coming in with a lowball offer after talking like he’s onboard at ask. Oh well - the cars are basically back together either for me to easily get around the next month or so before tearing them down again or ideally for the next buyer to come scoop them up out of my garage. No rush here and I’m sticking to my price or sticking with the project.

Pretty safe to say that these girls are no longer for sale. The shell of the S4 will eventually be listed for sale but it looks like I’m back into the project for the long haul
