    Allroad 2.7t mid muffler

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’m looking for stock style mid muffler for my 2.7 Allroad. From what I can tell the c5 chassis mid mufflers look like they have the same mounting points and pipe configuration with slightly different diameter pipes. Any one have experience with the different mid mufflers? Could I use a muffler from a sedan a6 with the 3.0l? Appears the difference is the pipe diameter. Thanks

    Allroad 2.7t mid muffler

According to this website that I use to reference parts diagrams, the 2.4-3.0 use the same mid and rear section exhaust parts, but there are multiple part numbers listed, so I bet there is a diameter variance. I do not know how to tell, but you could search all the part numbers individually and try to find some info there.

My other more practical thought is to search Marketplace for a part out and see if their exhaust is good. I did a quick search within 50 miles of Williamsburg, PA and found a bunch of Allroads for sale and a couple for

That’s a great website for parts diagrams! Specs on the mufflers are hard to find but I’ve had a little success finding the specs on the different clamps used. Seems I currently have 2in pipe from the cats. 50mm clamps fit there. I found the clamps listed for the 3.0 engine are 55mm so about 2.25 in diameter on that one. Looks like the clamp listed for the 2.8 engine is listed as 42mm so about 1 5/8 diameter on that one. I wouldn’t mind picking up a parts car… but if the exhaust is worth saving the rest will probably be worth saving too then I’ll have another one like some other guys on here! Seriously I have too many horses in the stables as is!

I haven't had experience with the mid muffler, but I know that the flex coupler is 2.25 X 4.0 inches. This connects the down pipe to the catalytic converter. I suspect the diameter is the same coming out of the catalytic converter. Would the diameter be different going into the mid muffler? I also have the 2.7T engine in a 2003 allroad.

Hmm interesting. I’m certain I used 2in flex couplers to repair my down pipe to cat connection. I definitely have 2 in behind the cats as well. Perhaps we have the different engine code 2.7t.

I have a pile of C5's from out west with original exhaust systems... Despite the total lack of moisture and salt out there I would be surprised if any of these cars have any component that could be reused if I removed them. They corrode from the inside due to the moisture in the exhaust, I think that corrosion may be worse than anything external! All of them show significant corrosion where the pipes are welded into the body of the muffler/resonator/etc. The center one looks the worst on the 2.7T cars, even my low mileage ones.

I supplied my welder with the 2.25X4 in. flex coupler. He made no mention of it being the wrong diameter. I wonder if he made it fit by sliding over the existing pipe? I actually didn't measure it myself so I don't know for sure what diameter pipe I have. Mine is a 2003 allroad with 2.7T engine. Interesting.

This is exactly what killed my system that I’m looking to replace.

Doing a little exhaust work myself and the outside diameter (OD) of my factory 2003 Allroad 2.7T is 2.25” where it would meet the factory catalytic converters.

I wonder if this difference in diameter goes along with the change from apb to bel engine? Mine is 01 apb engine stock downpipes.

I don’t think so. Maybe 2001 because it’s special, but I’ve always been under the impression that all C5’s had the same exhaust from the catalytic converters back. At least here in The States. Clearly, there’s a diameter difference, but the APB to BEL changes were with the turbo exhaust flanges.

I ended up finding a good price for a mid muffler from a b5 a4 with the v6 engine. It appeared very similar to my stock one with the inlet pipe configuration a bit different for the a4. I was able to cut the inlet pipes and weld my x section off my old muffler. I thought the hanger looked closer to my old muffler but they were spaced a little different. I just saved the old ones and welded them onto the new muffler body. Took a little work to get it all perfect but the final result is good. As for the rest Im gonna have a shop bend me tail pipes and utilize the original stainless tips. It sounds fine with this setup so far. I’d say the piggie pipes had the most affect on the sound so far.

don't like noisy exhausts, but it may help to spin turbos couple hundred RPM earlier, so should be noticeable when driving.

I very much agree! I didn’t want any extra noise. Without any tailpipes it’s only a little louder than it was with the original center and rear mufflers in place. Unfortunately my rear mufflers are all about gone now too.

Heck yeah! Nice find and way to be resourceful! I bet it sounds really nice. I know this sound, haha.
