    Drivetrain slop, mount going bad?

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I've owned my 2015 S8 for about two years now (bought at ~56k miles, now at ~78k miles) and I've noticed some "slop" has developed in the drivetrain. It presents itself much more noticeably when in sport mode. Symptoms are:
    1. When accelerating hard a "clunk" between 1-2 shift
    2. When letting on/off the accelerator in sport mode I can feel the drivetrain loading up and relaxing. I've read others describe the feeling as herky-jerky.

My car was not always like this. I don't drive it hard frequently so it hasn't been abused in my 2 years of ownership.

I feel like it is due to a mount going bad but not sure which one(s).

If anyone has had this issue and has fixed it, your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you

The ZF transmissions always seem to develop that 1-2 clunk. My old B7 had it, my RS 6 has it, and my C7 has it.

It's not the transmission mount--I've changed that on my A6 and still have it. Probably the center driveshaft bushing--I've read of folks saying they helped improve that by replacing it with the JXB one.

Aside from that, idk if a TCU tune can help mitigate it any.

Get the 034 motor sports inserts as well as the JXB carrier. Be advised that the transmission mount for the A8L is different than for the S8, but 034 does make one as it is the same as for some other ZF applications in the smaller A cars.

If your motor mounts actually go bad it will eventually throw a soft code, meaning it will not throw a light on the dash but there will be a code in there for the VCDS or another VAG capable scan tool. Check for that now, but also again in the future. I think it’s possible that you may be able to feel those going out before they actually fail enough to throw the code. There is a solid mount on the market, but 034 also makes an Elastomeric inactive mount you can use for one or both of them.

The drivetrain inserts did nothing w.r.t. to what OP is seeing on my A6.

I do have the JXB carrier but have not installed yet.
Good info on the motor mounts because I thought when they go bad a service warning or CEL would show on the dash.
