Why did they replace the T-stat? It is MAP controlled, there is no tie-in to the vacuum system on it.

I am doing my water pump and shut-off valve as a preventative in a few weeks once the snow bank that currently encases the vehicle melts.

Just my experience, 2019 S5 with right at 70k miles and I have owned since it since around 22k. I do the majority of the work or bolt-ons but I wanted to take this job to a shop. I have a great Audi/VW shop near me in DAP Repair that did the work. I sourced the parts and went with OEM water pump, thermostat and coolant control valve. I had already replaced the switchover valve on top of the block to check for coolant migration. Found some dirt but no coolant at around 60k miles. DAP confirmed there was no coolant migration which was a relief and the water pump had not started leaking. I am not saying everyone will get 70k miles out of the original pump but there had definitely been revisions since my original pump so I relieved to have that completed. I am stage 1 with 034 for the last 40k or so. I mostly ran 93 until a few months ago when E85 became more convenient. I do not track but I do push the car hard but only after getting up to operating temperature.

I wanted to replace the thermostat because I had heard of failures on here as well as from the shop. If you are replacing the water pump, you might as well throw in the thermostat to keep from either paying someone later or redoing a majority of the setup work.

Cdang: Good read, thanks for sharing. Wish we had a consensus shop like that in NJ.
