    scored cylinder horizontally

    Hey All,
So picked up a used ctu engine a few days ago for a rebuild project and upon inspection all was great except for cylinder 3.
Seems to be some weird scoring horizontally in the lower mid area. Supposedly all tests passed by the seller but not sure how this passed unless its no big concern.
Is honing absolutely required here or will this run. What would you do in this case?

I'm assuming you have the head off. Take some gray scotch Brite with a little oil on it and very lightly try to clean it off. If it comes off you'll probably be fine. Make sure you cannot feel anything in the cylinder wall.

If the head is still on pit some oil in the cylinders and spin the motor a bit to see if the rings are cleaning it off.

Looks like it sat with water in it. Possible corrosion from the aluminum piston and or rust in the rings. Might want to take them out and clean the ring grooves and throw in some new rings since your right there.

Its hard to tell from a photo for sure, but that doesn't look to me like something that will come out without re-boring the block/sleeve.

In the top pic it looks like that line/damage on the right in the photo, is enough to feel a ridge with your fingernail, if that's the case it needs to be bored or re-sleeved. If you can feel an indentation with your fingernail or with a pick or flat razor it won't come out with only a hone/finisher

I would return this thing if thats possible. This block should not have been sold as if it was in a good condition, and thats a fact.

    Thanks for the feedback.
Yea the head is still on, took photos with an endoscope camera.
I will see if putting some oil in and turning it will do anything here.
But the fingernail test will probably fail.

    I had a similar situation.
I could barely feel a vertical scar with my finger.
It was VERY noticeable with my fingernail.
Instead of going down the bore-it-out road with bigger pistons, I dropped the block off at the scrap yard.
