Didn't Want To Drive RS6 in Winter...

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
So I got an A4 Allroad to drive in winter.

I make fun of people that are fixated on a particular color...however, I became 'that person' and insisted on Mythos Black with Black optic package. I really wanted to match my RS6 which is spec'd the same.

I really don't like that SUV look of the black fender flares, so I wanted them to match the color of the rest of the car.

Problem is the dealer is having some issue with 'a sensor' on the car and I have not been able to pick it up yet.

Just got my winter wheels and tires mounted yesterday and armored up with TuxMat. These cars are amazing in the winter but I get it. I still drive my wife's Golf R a lot during the winter.

I've driven my RS6 in snow on winters. Performs as well as every other TorSen Audi on winters I've driven in the past...AKA fun, predictable and has the ability to stop and turn in a controlled manner.

I never got the point of having a nice car then driving a beater for half of the year but ok whatever suits you.

I wouldn't consider a A4 Allroad a "beater" by any means. Very nice daily for winter use, congrats.

Reminds me, I need to install my Tuxmats.

Should drive other car. It’s totally competent and way more fun.

I'm just guessing that the OP - while they *could* drive the RS6 in the winter, and while it is a fantastic winter car - just doesn't want to expose it to the harsh elements of winter w.r.t. salt on the roads and so forth, and would rather use a "cheaper" car like the A4 allroad that is still a fantastic car (and we don't know if it's used/new and how old it is) for said purposes. If they have the discretionary income to do so, it's hard to argue with that. We all have our priorities.

I like that the A4 allroad is a little higher. Even with the RS6 jacked all the way up it is still a little low for places I need to go.

While driving my RS7 is great in the winter and it is plenty capable I understand getting something different for the winter. Here in MN, it's the other drivers that I'm concerned about, not the roads.

Sure though honestly if discretionary income was the concern how many are going to buy an additional car to resolve that point?

Personally, I don't buy a car to let it sit in the garage for 1/3 of the year. Making car payments and paying for insurance on a car that's doing nothing for me but taking up garage space. Then spending even more money on another car and more auto insurance. This additional expense more than offsets any extra depreciation on the RS6. Plus, I'm not maximizing my enjoyment and utility from owning the RS6.

Ultimately, I'm not keeping this car for more than a few years and it's never going to be a collectors item where "never been worn, full box and papers, still has factory stickers" (IYKYK) is going to even matter. I have literally winter driven everything up to 911 Turbo S and at the end of the day, only a handful of people even ask if it's been winter driven. Most people don't even ask because they can't even tell by looking at the car.

If you're worried about the car getting messed up by the winter (it'll be fine), you can always spend some money on PPF instead. This would give you peace of mind and be appreciated by the new buyer when you go and sell the car.

My 911 sits in the garage more than not during the winter, but that's more because I don't want to go through the hassle of installing winter wheels/tires on the car - it's not my DD, which is my RS7, and that sits outside all winter and gets snow, salt, and muck on it. I've got PPF and ceramic coating on it, so other than the undercarriage - which I wash regularly - it's OK. All that being said, different strokes for different folks - if the OP feels that they don't want to drive it in the winter and want another car instead - all the power to them.

It is not the snow that matters, it is the corrosion that ensues. I wouldn't drive my RS6 in that slush and crap any more than my Ferraris.
The BMW 535xi Touring that I currently drive in the winter has reached the point of being un-repairable. The fasteners need to be cut off for just about any repair at this point. The front spoiler fell off the other day because the metal fasteners just crumbled. Plus the body is rusting now. It was a nice car, it served its purpose as a winter beater for an amazing 14 years and time to say goodby. I wonder if I'll get 14 winters out of the A4?

The 535xi was $65,000 in 2011, the A4 is around $55,000 in 2024. The "4" is a step down from a 5-series BMW, but 14 years of development makes the "4" pretty nice and matches and beats the old 5-series in many ways. The 535xi has an i6 3 liter with twin turbos, compared to the "4" with its little 2 liter. However, at least during my test drive, that little 2 liter, blown up to 260 HP gets the job done.

Just got a call from the dealer, I'll be picking it up today!!

Nope, western burbs. Once we get some snow we’ll see whether the RS6 or Golf R handles it better. I got Pilot Alpins on both.

Wow, this little A4 wagon is fantastic! Way more 'sporty' than the old BMW 535xi. Better exhaust tone and throttle response. Roadholding feels better too.
I guess I was expecting some dopey stripped-down 'entry-level' car, but this little A4 is way better than I expected!

I got the Premium Plus package, rubber mats, Audi Ring puddle lights, Mythos Black, and Black optic.

I fly RC Heilicopters and, yes I have gone to the airfield with the RS6, but it occasionally scrapes on the way up the dirt road to the field. The added ground clearance of the A4 will be appreciated. Especially in a few days; Jan 1 we have an annual fun-fly in the snow.

I agree with everything you wrote. I will add one of my reasons for driving my RS7 less in the winter: the driving public. As in, all the vehicles running around on crap tires, drivers with one-brain cell, etc. I have confidence in my and my car's abilities, but unfortunately I'm not the only one on the road. FWIW I'm in the Denver area.

I have only had the A4 for a day and already it is covered with salt and some mud. In fact my wife was urgently looking through the glovebox for the window sticker; she didn't believe it was Mythos Black ( the A4 is sitting right next to the Mythos Black RS6 in the garage).

Curious to see which handles the snow better.. I've got an RS7 on winter tires; it seems to be really good on light snow and water.

A4 will ride higher and on narrower tires, so should handle snow better, especially deeper it gets.

For whatever reason for the last year or so I have not been able to post images.

    Nice. Pictures?

Both my RS6 and A4 were already on the dealer's lots, so no waiting. What is the wait on an A4 build?
