I bought a 2016 allroad recently and the TPMS light keeps coming on even after verifying tire pressures and storing them in the MMI (did this multiple times over a week or two). After storing the new pressures, the light goes away but then comes back in the next day or so. Sometimes the light pops up in a short 5-10 min drive, and other times it takes hundreds of miles over a few days, but it always comes back on. Every time the light has popped up, tire pressures are always at or slightly above the recommended pressure.
I put new tires on it (continental control contact sport srs+) because the tread was low for winter, and I thought the old tires might be the cause too. I think I remember reading that 2009+ doesn't have normal tire pressure sensors, and instead use the wheel speed sensors to detect uneven "drag" that would be indicative of low tire pressure. I was hoping that there was just a flat spot or something on one of the old tires that was causing vibrations or something and was upsetting the TPMS.
The light keeps coming back on though even with brand new tires.
Do these cars actually not have traditional TPMS sensors that physically measure pressure? I can't find a clear answer online. If they do, maybe one of the sensors is failing?
Next time it happens I'll scan it with my OBD11 and hopefully it shows something useful.
Anyone else experience this? Thanks.
EDIT: I'll also mention it doesn't point to a specific tire or anything either, it just says "TPMS malfunction, check tire pressures" or something along those lines. I'll get a photo of it next time.
