Exhaust heat shield , embossed stainless

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
I’m wondering if anyone has any insight on where I can get some thin embossed heat shielding so I can heat wrap the headers and down pipe ?

I’ve spent a couple hours searching and it seems like there is a shortage.
There is a place overseas that sells it but I’ve gotten no response.
The other options I’ve come across seems like an architect construction supplier for kitchen backsplashes.

So if anyone has any insight, that would be great!!

Does it have to be stainless? https://www.amazon.com/Exhaust-Autom.../dp/B0DDT495J4

Idk what you have or haven't done, but you may also want to consider ceramic coating the manifolds and downpipes to further reduce heat

It will be a dual layer. The first layer being a quarter inch thick, ceramic insulation fiber.
Second layer being the welded stainless

There is a ton of companies that sell the aluminum, but the stainless seems to be out of stock are hard to find

I’m not sure but it seems like the aluminum might work. I have a sample piece coming, but I don’t think it’s as good as the stainless.

I would avoid that unless you don't plan to drive in the rain often.

I’m thinking the headers should be fine tucked up where they are plus the method I will use should insulate the ceramic well

My fear was them getting oil on the insulation and catching fire. So I used some aluminum sheets but can’t remember where I got them from for the OP.

I’ve tried welding the aluminum to stainless and it will not work.
So it will have to be the stainless embossed sheets.

Yea i didn’t weld mine. Just cut/bent to shape and made a hole to mount them with a bolt.

This stuff is widely used on the inside of aircraft engine nacelles. If you had access to a surplus/boneyard type place you could get enough to work with from just a single blanket. Hi-Temp is the primary supplier I've seen.

The airplane standard is to have the sheets custom formed into a single piece. But for one-off type stuff, most of what I seen in automotive aftermarket is small pieces bonded together. Capacitance welding is the way to go for this, but if you don't have access to one of those you could probably get away with clamps/safety wire/fasteners.

This is great stuff thanks man!!

I want awareness of a junkyard for planes until you said something.

I do have Davis-Monthan Air Force Base, AZ , which is definitely I trip to see in person but doubt they have junkyard access.

I’ll definitely check that link out.

And yes I have a capacitor welder otw, hopefully it will be better than my first method.

My first attempt was a failure.
Second attempt was a little bit better.
Still have not found the right stuff.

Have you tried reaching out to manufacturer or tuning company like Canadian Auto Performance and asked what they use for their stuff?

Couldn’t hurt to see if they’ll lend you a helping hand.

So far, we reached out to three companies and haven’t gotten a response from a single one yet

Don't search for embossed, just stainless exhaust insulation

    I need just the foil.
That stuff will be a pain to weld with the insulation on the back

The point of it is the insulation. You won't have much of an air gap with just the foil to the exhaust/turbo. The stuff like CAP, is insulated and sheets welded to each other, which you can do by cleaning the insulation off the edges and welding it.

Exhaust heat shield , embossed stainless

This was not an easy or cheap thing to figure out. Probably would have been cheaper to just sent it out lol
The material is not cheap either.
Which is why I posted to find material.
Us foils quoted me 600$ plus 80 shipping
For a 36”x40” piece of embossed stainless steel

    Still looking for better options.

Looks smart, how much did the welder and insulation cost roughly? I'd like to do something similar with my manifolds and turbo hot sides, did you follow a guide or just wing it?
