I don't know if it was always like this but BMW seems to have a strong edge in performance compared to Audi and the design language of the new Mercedes AMG cars just seem to far surpass what Audi is offering aesthetically. I understand the eventual need to completely electrify but I feel like Audi tried a little too hard to be the 'pioneer' of complete electrification the past several years.
In my perception after owning many BMWs and Audis (Porsche too), BMW has always edged towards Sport, more so from the 90's-2000's. They are still doing that now (thankfully). At first I kinda dug BMW's odd designs with my old Z3 Coupe (The clown shoe) and M Roadster, the 3 series was sharp. Audi's were a step down in sportiness (over all driver feel), but still above the geriatric MBZ offerings. The real Audi Quattro was a hoot to play with, but they were heavy and sloppy (suspension). Then BMW went weird with their interiors (old BMW interiors are the best IMO) and funky body folds/creases. Changed from curves to a block of cheese. I appreciated the later Audi interiors, they had gotten better with suspension, power was always meh, but they were still curvy. With times and tastes in interior/exterior changing I hopped into a TT RS (the ultimate Golf R =), last of the sporty Audis of that generation. It had the best combination of power/tuning/weight/size for me. Nice to see the new 8Y has improved just about everything. The DNA of the big four, Porsche, BMW, Audi, Mercedes still seems to hold. Porsche pulled a semi hat trick with a Sporty yet comfortable experience over distance. BMW competes more with Porsche, Audi with MBZ imo. Owners complaining of BMW's harsh ride in the Ms didn't understand what they were buying. Audi goes for a more compliant ride, good for stock, little squishy. I've not been in a late model MBZ, but I checked out after the Star Wars style dashboards, lol.
