    Battery Change

I know there is a lot of info out there, but haven't seen much mentioned of using a Memory Saver.

I have a 2017 SQ5, new Nov 2016. The oem battery is just now starting to show signs of end of life. Surprised it made it this long!

Is there any reason to use a Memory Saver or just disconnect, change and then recode?

Read about possible issues with having to restore auto-down window regulators and a few other things if power is disrupted.

I got 8 years out of the oem battery, replace with same or go with an aftermarket?

As for recoding, I have an Autel MX808, first battery replacement I will use it for, does anyone have the easy steps to do the recode using Autel?

Thanks in advance for the assistance.

Never used one, never had a problem. I pick up whatever Costco has in stock. Pull negative first. Not familiar with Autel. I use vcds to change a digit in battery coding but feel like some people don't bother with that step.

The only thing I recall needing to reset is the power window auto up/down. It's too easy to reset that to bother with a voltage maintainer while the battery is being swapped, imo. Unless you already own one, then go ahead.

There's no reason to use an Audi p/n'd battery, but you're going to want to stick to AGM and to whatever size you had (H8 or H9 I assume). I assume you have AGM, as wet flood I wouldn't expect to last 8 years. But my H8 AGM lasted 13 years before I replaced it.

They question for the Autel will be does it have a user interface for doing the task, or do you just need to go to adaptations for the J533 (19-gateway) and just update the adaptation value manually, like you'd change any adaptation value in the car.

Just pull the battery and put in a new one. Update the code in VCDS to tell the battery management system that the battery is new. No issues, no need to reset or reprogram anything. Windows and seats and everything else worked fine. Done this twice so far.

The oem battery, Varta AGM, 75AH and it says 420A, I assume 420CCA. Not huge specs at all.

The Everstart Platinum AGM at Walmart, H7, is 80AH and 850CCA.

A lot of people use the Everstarts, any thoughts? Good or bad experiences? For $180, not too bad at all.

The Napa H7 has similar specs but more expensive. Probably out of the same factory.

I went with the largest size it would take, which is H9 because I have many things drawing power (dash cam, amplifier, android head unit, tpms system, etc) so it's nice to not worry about voltage getting low when it sits a while. I also still sit and listen to music like a teenager so that doesn't help either. So far the beefy H9 has handled all of my needs.

If you don't care about any of that I'd say get whatever AGM is cheapest and call it good especially if you plan on selling before it needs another replacement.

The factory batteries are DIN rated, not SAE or CCA rated. That's why the 420A rating seems abnormal to you.

All the batteries are generally the same. So if it's an H7 AGM, it's pretty much the same as any other H7 AGM you'll find for sale. The real difference will be how they handle the batteries at that retail outlet. Are they kept up on state of charge, how old is the stock, etc.

You will want to confirm the battery is charged up to 100% SoC before throwing it in the car. I went with NAPA when I replaced mine, because they had one, they were closer, and it was all within $20 between the various venues.

It is curious they use only an H7 in that vehicle, which has a power tail gate (assuming yours has the power tail gate). Even more so that it has the V6 to fire up. My 2.0t avant has an H8 AGM. But if you've had no issues with the H7, and don't anticipate any load change, just go H7.

You can replace using BOSCH Battery of the same: battery type, capacity AH, and cold cranking CCA. Bosch and Varta batteries are identical and manufactured by the same company Johnson Control Battery - JCB. However, Bosch after market battery may not have a BEM Code label. Providing the two batteries are equivalent in term of type & power rating; you can create a new BEM code from the Varta BEM Code by changing the manufacturing date YYMMDD; Change the 5th~10th digits (counting from right).

Before disconnecting the battery, remember to connect a constant 12Volts to keep all settings alive in ECUs' memory; otherwise you have to do steering angle & lock limit calibration and other settings again. (If you can replace the battery within few minutes then backup power may not be required). VCDS is a good tool for coding new battery and checking the battery status. When replacing the battery without BEM coding, the "battery management system" does not know a new battery is installed. The new battery will not be charged correctly and damaged.
