Water pump (aluminum vs plastic) and after-run pump replacement

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    2013 Audi A4 (CPMA) with 130k miles.

I recently found a leak coming from the water pump’s belt cover so planning to replace it for the 2nd time. Saw some old discussions about how the aluminum one by Graf didn’t do well for some and did well for others. Anything new on it?
Also, I never took it to get the new after run coolant pump as per recall 19N8. I only took it for recall 19N4 which was the unplugging of the after run pump. I think I was supposed to go later when the new pumps came in, but never got to it. Now that I am needing to change out the main water pump, I thought I could do it DIY but the 19N8 says I need to have an ECM software update with flashing software. Can I just buy a new 06H965559H and plug it in?

19N8 is also about the V51 afterrun pump, not the main coolant pump. The main coolant pump is entirely mechanically operated, there's nothing the car can interact with to even know if the main coolant pump is present.

It also appears 19N8 is the follow on action if your V51 was disconnected rather than replaced in 19N4.

So none of that 19N4/19N8 has anything to do with your main coolant pump.

I understand that 19N4/8 are about the after run pump and unrelated to the main coolant pump. I still want to change my old after run pump to the up-to-date after run pump because I never got it done. So I was wondering if anybody knows if I really need to flash the new software into the ECM or if I can just install and plug in the new one.

Oh, didn't catch you were discussing both pumps. If I had to replace my coolant pump, I'd just stick to the Audi OE one. My factory original is still going at 269k miles.

On the afterrun pump, it's a safety recall. Why not just take it to the dealership and let them do whatever they need to do?

This is the updated 19N4/19O2 statement - https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...8V229-9666.pdf

From that, we see the ECM update is only if you haven't already had 19M1 performed: https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/rcl/201...7V002-5454.pdf

19M1 was nearly 1.5 years before 19N4. Took them that long to sort a physical solution to the problem they discovered nearly as soon as the vehicles were on the market.

I didn't see any ECM software version info to know how to confirm if 19M1 was installed, though.

So can you get by without the update, sure. But I don't get why you don't just let a dealership perform and close out these NHTSA safety recalls for that VIN.

    Thanks for the reply, Smac.
I called a dealer a few months ago and they said that it’s been too long since those safety recalls went into effect, so I would have to pay dealer price to get the new after run pump and installed (is that accurate?) And I don’t want to pay for that labor if I can do it myself.
I think I will order the 06H965559H as my car was made after 2012, and I’ll see how it runs without an ECM update. I definitely got the 19N4 recall done so I’ve been reviewing the 19N8 document.

I wonder if the 19M1 needs to be reversed to restore the ECM's operation of the pump now that it's replaced with a long term fixed unit. In that instance, yeah, a software update would be necessary. If you have the pump disconnected now, do you have any errors for it in a scan log (VCDS, etc)? If not, then the 19M1 turned off the ECM trying to use it and the ECM monitoring it. And that needs to be reversed. So that's probably what the ECM update in 19N8 is about.

As for the expiration, since the fire hazard was addressed by 19M1, the follow up actions of 19N4 (disconnect and leave bad in place) / 19N8 (replace bad with good and reconnect) and 19O2 (replace bad with good; if they had stock of the new pump at the time of visit) could be viewed as a service campaign, I guess. And we see the 19N8 document first line is Service Action, not Safety Recall, like the others.

Right now, OBD11 shows a code for coolant pump B (P261A). So I think if I were to plug in the old one, or even a new one, the code would go away.

Then I'd run with that idea. Swap it and carry on.
