Long and short of it I purchased a car August 27th out of state and it was delivered sept 1st. Now it’s sept 27th and the dealer called to say I owe $375 in taxes because they underestimated the tax rate of my county/state. I’m in Ny dealer is in Chicago. Now they say they won’t ship me my plates and reg until I pay the 375. They are being professional and it’s not like they are holding it ransom they just explained to me they underestimated the tax rate. Should this fall on me? Is this some type of scam? If they already have the plates and reg that means they already paid the taxes. I signed the contract a month ago and shouldn’t it be binding ? I’ll have to go over again and see if there is anything saying the taxes are only estimated.l and could be more or less. Just checking if this is a common scam or not. Thanks

I’m curious why that dealer is charging the tax from another state? I’ve only bought one car out of state. A Subaru Outback years ago. Purchased in Nevada and brought into California. I signed a document so I wasn’t charged any tax in Nevada but had 10 days to register and pax the tax direct to California. I don’t know, maybe things are done different nowadays.

They registered and did all paperwork there. I guess I could have said not to and did it alll
Myself but dmv here in ny is brutal lol. I’d rather they did it all themselves.

OK, I guess that makes sense. I don’t think there’s really much you can do other than pay the requested tax. Sounds like the dealer just underestimated the tax a bit. The entire tax bill should be pretty easy to calculate to verify everything is accurate.
