Help please with the ESP and Brake Malfunction lights on my display

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
    Dear Audi Fans,

    I have a 2005 A6, 4.2L, Quattro, with ~117K miles

Several weeks ago, I noticed that my passenger floor was damp after a light rain... I pulled the carpet back and it was also damp underneath, yet no standing water. I let it dry for a week. I did some water testing and found water coming through a rubber sidewall plug near the front, right sunroof (bottom) drain. I went on to check the cowl (pendulum?) drain and one was nearly full of junk.

Several days later the ESP, Traction and Brake Malfunction lights all came on, as did my air bag light yet is has since remained off. This looks like a mess to me and may be beyond my ability, yet I will try. Could this just be a coincidence?

Anyone with experience with this issue or interpreting the scan below, I will be very grateful. Thank you.

Very interesting. Your yaw sensor (G419) isn't communicating. The sensor communicates via CAN, it should be located in the center of the car right on top of the driveshaft tunnel, in a spot that is approximately underneath the center console armrest. You might be able to reach it from the back of the console without removing it, I am not sure.

I have never had one of these fail but I do know they are sensitive to shock and can be destroyed by dropping them on a hard surface. It seems that if it was damaged in such a way, it would still communicate and simply would not measure yaw correctly or at all; Therefore it sounds like this sensor has either completely failed, or you have a problem with the power or ground feed. It should have four wires - Power, ground, CAN high and CAN low. I would check the power and ground before deciding to replace the sensor since you mentioned having water on the floor. I don't have my service laptop in front of me but I can check and see if there are any splices in the ground or power feed under the carpet as these points would be suspect if there were any issues with power or ground.

I wouldn't be afraid to replace this sensor with a used one, I have never had one fail in any of my C6 (nor my C5 for that matter) so I suspect that they are generally quite reliable.

To test the power and ground feed, I'd definitely want to sink a bit of current into the ground wire/source a bit from the power. Do you have a multimeter?

    Thank you,

I do have a multimeter and will try and figure out ground and power. Are the CAN pins in need of some kind of testing? Is there a way to test the G419? I did locate the G419 via online searches and could see that it is possible to remove from the rear of the console.

I pulled the carpet as far back as I could and could only see harness. I did notice a new ground wire, after the dealer replaced the passenger airbag, that is when all of this started.

How can you tell that the G419 is not communicating with other modules and not the other way around?

BTW - You may been on the right all along.

The reason I assume that the communication error is on the G419 side is because it communicates via CAN with the ABS/ESP system, and the ABS module is the only module noting that there is a problem (and the ECU is also telling you to check the ABS computer because it is not happy).

I will have to look at the wiring diagrams, but I would assume there is more than just the G419 sensor on that particular CAN bus; As long as this is true, then if something was wrong with the CAN bus, then you would have more codes for the other devices on that bus. As long as there are more devices on that CAN bus, then it probably isn't necessary to test the bus since you know the other modules are happy and therefore the CAN bus is most likely OK. You could measure the voltages on the CAN bus (should be between ~2 and ~4V) but further testing would require a more advanced tool.

I don't think there is any easy way to test the G419, you would need a CAN master or something similar to test it on the bench and I am not sure that the messages for this sensor are well documented anywhere.

For testing power and ground, keep in mind that if you have a wire somewhere that is corroded, but not completely broken, a multimeter may show acceptable measurements when in fact there is a problem - This is because the impedance of the multimeter is very high, therefore it places hardly any load on these power wires. Something like a test light with a filament bulb, a brake light bulb, etc should be used to place a load between power and ground; When this load is applied to the pins, you connect one side of the multimeter to a known good ground, and then measure the voltage on both the ground pin and 12V pin. With a load applied, both pins should be very close to the same voltage measured when there is no load applied.

You have a first model year C6, these cars are reaching that 2 decade point, so it is conceivable that the sensor just quit... If it appears to be the sensor, and you have a junkyard nearby, you could buy a cheap replacement and just plug it in - If there is no wiring problem, then your no communication code would go away and you would have the standard code regarding calibration needed of the steering angle/yaw with a simple drive cycle. I took a quick look on ebay and these sensors are quite cheap at $30-40 there so maybe even cheaper at a local junkyard. I wouldn't be afraid of buying a used yaw sensor (as long as it hadn't been dropped lol) since the current dealer price on this sensor appears to be over a thousand dollars!

Wow, okay, that makes sense, also that the ABS module is giving off some sort of signal, so look at the other components. Thank you for the tips on testing. This helps me understand the issue much better. I've got 2 on my eBay watch list and may order tomorrow, depending what I can figure out. I saw the MSRP price, crazy.

Will a used sensor (assuming that's all it is) require any kind of re-coding?

I tried to re-calibrate steering angle today yet the Ross Tech security code was rejected.

I could be wrong, but I do not believe there is any coding for this sensor. IIRC with this generation of ABS/ESP there is also no more requirement to enter the login code for coding; The only requirement for coding is that the Air Bag module first has the correct(matching) driveline and brake system variant coding in it. You will not be able to do the steering angle calibration without this sensor working - And if memory serves me correct, this generation of C6 should complete the steering angle calibration from a short drive cycle (with turning the steering wheel to the locks in both directions) and clear the angle sensor calibration trouble code on its own.

This particular yaw sensor is called an "ESP Duosensor" by VAG, and it measures on two planes instead of one. The first plane is the typical yaw sensor plane, side to side rotation of the vehicle. I can't remember what the second plane is offhand but it is probably sideways roll of the vehicle. This data is used by the ABS program, ESP program, and Air Bag system hence why you get all of the lights. I believe the data might also be used for the servotronic steering control?

I just checked wiring diagram and it appears that this sensor may be communicating with the ABS/ESP module on a dedicated high-speed CAN bus with nothing else on that bus. Therefore I would actually check the voltages on the CAN bus to make sure that they are within the expected range. I highly doubt there are any splices in this CAN bus between the sensor and the ABS/ESP module to fail, but I will try to check that this afternoon.

Below is what I came up with today. I am not experience in electronics and there may be errors. I was able to disconnect the sensor yet I doubt I'll be able to pull it without removing the center console.

    4 – wire plug
With power Wire color Without power
    2.7V Orange/brown 1.3 KΩ
    12V Black/purple 17.9 KΩ -Power?
14.4 KΩ Brown 0.44 KΩ -Ground?
    2.7V Orange/black 1.3 KΩ

How are you measuring the voltages for the power and ground wire? Did you mean 14.4V for the 3rd line, not 14.4Ohm?

For power, measure voltage between brown and Black/Purple, and also measure between (known good ground - Maybe a clean spot on lower seat bracket, or the metal perimeter of cigarette lighter) and Black/Purple
For ground, measure voltage between Brown and (known good ground), but for resistance, do this first: Short your multimeter leads together at the tips, and press the "REL" button on your multimeter (or however it activates relative meausurement mode). This will cancel out the resistance of the leads themselves + any internal resistance in the DMM, which I suspect is at least 0.2-0.4 ohms. I am not sure where you got the 0.44kOhm measurement on ground, please let me know how that was measured. Even without Relative mode activated on the DMM, if you measure resistance between some known good ground in the car, and the brown ground wire pin, I would expect the measurement to be under 1 ohm.

Please let me know if any of the above doesn't quite make sense, I can draw up a quick diagram which will make more sense - It is often difficult to adequately describe desired measurement points/methods without a diagram.

Oh, and BTW, CAN voltages look good, so that is good news.

LOL, as you will see, I am a novice. I reviewed you notes and re-checked values 3 times. See below.

Initially, I grounded (to a known ground) then probed each terminal for resistance and power, with and without power. I couldn't figure out how to turn my new DMM off from Auto, so it kept reading resistance instead of volts. I grabbed a cheap MM to get another resistance value.

    Brown to Black/Purple = 11.95v
    Black/Purple to known ground = 11.95v

    Resistance
Brown to known ground = 1.51 (Kohms) on one DMM and 015 on the other MM

It looks like I have power and ground as it should. Would it be safe to say, its the sensor?

I took my chances and went to the wrecking yard today and pulled one from a newer model A4.

My original part number - 4F0907637. From what I have gathered online Part Number: 6Q0907637A
    Supersession(s): 4F0907637; 6Q0-907-637-A

I then re-scanned and went from 'no signal' to 'implausible signal' at the sensor and then back to 'no signal'. I'm not positive if this is a result of the 'sensor' needing re-coded or it simply won't work. I doubt that I will be able to find one at a local yard as the application is limited to a few cars between 05 and 08. Looking on eBay.

Brown to known ground being 1.51kOhms is definitely not right, but not sure what 015 means on the other one? Do you know what range it was in when it said 015? I would not expect it to read more than 1 ohm even on a meter with really crappy leads. So I am still not quite sure what your meter is saying. If measuring between the brown wire, and a known good ground is *definitely* 1.51kOhms, then we have found your problem, but I'm wondering if maybe your meter is having trouble with auto ranging.

Do you have a test light that uses a bulb, and not an LED? I think they still sell them at harbor freight. The LED ones don't use enough power to be relevant IMO, it really needs to be a filament bulb since that filament bulb takes quite a bit more power than the LED which is beneficial for this test. To test with a test light, you would connect one end of the test light to brown and the other to black/purple, and the light should light up.

Alternatively, if you do not have a test light, do you have a cigarette lighter phone charger? This might seem janky but you could rig up some paperclips bent straight with some tape to connect the center pin of the charger to black/purple, and the side lugs of the charger to brown. With your phone plugged in to the charger, touch the two paperclip wires to those pins (don't reverse them, cheap USB chargers may not have reverse voltage protection in which case USB charger will become a paperweight), if your phone starts charging (and stays charging after a few seconds) then the power feed is definitely good since that charger should be pulling upwards of half an amp from those wires. No worries about blowing a fuse as half an amp will be well within the capability of the wires, that circuit should have at least a 5 amp fuse on it.

Just edited my post above. I do have a filament test light yet can't find it. I may just go buy one, or borrow one. I also have 2 other DMM's but again don't know where they are. I moved to my hometown with a moving truck ready to unload, arrived at my house to a massive flood inside the house. Most of what I own is in boxes, in the garage. I do not know the range on the second MM, no denotations of value. I will get back to this tomorrow.

I think it is my DMM's; one reports in Kilo Ohms, and the other will not go below the 200 Ohms setting. Looking for an alternate.

I think that I was using a bad ground source.

Update of Brown to (verified) good ground.
    DMM1 = 1.1
    DMM2 = .89

Ok, so that probably looks good for the ground. Of that 0.89 ohms, I wouldn't be surprised if 0.8 ohms was just the resistance of the leads and any oxidation on the surface of the leads and terminal. I just checked a brand new set of high end pomona test leads on my fluke DMM and the total resistance of those leads is 0.45Ohm... I have seen really low quality china leads from Amazon well above 1 ohm.

I see you edited your comment right after my last post, I missed the comment about the junkyard sensor.

Going from no signal to implausible signal does not make sense to me for a CAN based sensor... Except... Was the sensor bolted horizontally on the car when you plugged it in and tested it? Keep in mind that this is a 2 axis sensor which, when the car is off/not in motion should show virtually no rotation on either axis... If you just had it sitting on the carpet or free hanging I suspect this would explain an implausible signal code. Very odd that it went back to no signal. Maybe still a good idea to test the power feed with a test light.

Here is the G419 procedure from ELSAWin:
    -Remove "extension" of center console
-Unplug electrical connector from G419 and remove two securing bolts
-Remove sensor and reinstall new sensor, making sure new sensor is seated in its bracket and is free of stress
-"DO NOT use the securing bolts to forcibly position the sensor unit G419" (i.e. make sure it is correctly seated before installing the bolts)
-Tighten securing bolts to 10Nm (Hand tight, not hoo-rah tight but give it a little finger love)

It does mention using the VAG VAS tool to select the "Replace" function for the sensor. I checked ODIS-S and I see absolutely nothing about any coding for this sensor under guided functions, the only thing I see is the steering angle calibration.

Since you saw the junkyard sensor go from no signal->implausible signal->no signal I am still wondering if there is a power feed issue. I looked at the wiring diagram. The 12V for this sensor *appears* to come directly from the ABS module with no splices.
The Ground connection leaves the sensor and goes into "main wiring harness". Inside "main wiring harness" is a ground splice for this module's ground, the splice does not appear to be shared so this must be a point where two sub-harnesses met up and they spliced them together. That splice is called "Earth connection 27" however I can not find any diagram showing where it is located in the harness, I would guess that it could be found if you followed the harness but this may be a pain with the carpet in the car. From there, the ground wire continues to the underside of the dash on the right side, where it bolts to what appears to be the metal dash frame (it appears that the stud it is fastened to is facing downward towards the floor, looks like it may be behind/above the glove box) or towards the rear underside of the dash).

So, you could try another sensor but I really think you should try to find that test light or devise another way to put a load on these power wires to make sure that they are OK...? Your DMM is showing what appears to be a low resistance to ground which is good, I just don't know why it would apparently toggle between no signal and implausible signal. Definitely check it with the sensor in the correct orientation and stationary just to make sure it wasn't simply the positioning of the sensor that caused this.

I didn't think about the dual axis. The sensor was not mounted properly (was not flat, which as you suggest, likely disrupting the axis), however the reason I believe that it didn't work was that it is the incorrect application. I did use a test light today as you recommended and found that the light illuminated on the Black/Purple wire. I will dig into "use the VAG tool to select the "Replace" function for the sensor". I will also see if I can re-calibrate the steering angle. There are 2 grounds in the area that you described, right, front, passenger floor, under the carpet.

I went to a different wrecking yard today and found the exact part, which had been sitting in the elements for over a year with no sunroof, yet it works!!! I ordered one from eBay last night that I will return in a few weeks if the used replacement works out.

After the install, I cleared codes, went for a drive as my E-Brake fault activates after about 5mph. I'll drive the car tomorrow to confirm the repair. Below is a post repair scan.

THANK TO AVANTLY FOR KICKING ASS! I believe that I learned a lot throughout this process and have him to thank.

I am glad you got it fixed! That is great.

Now I am sitting here, chuckling, thinking "I am glad that the Audi software engineers decided to incorporate a software strategy that decides whether or not the orientation of the sensor seems plausible, as opposed to just trusting it". What would happen if the ABS/Air bag system decided that the car was suddenly upside down or on its side? Deploy some air bags? Fire the ejection seat? Activate the emergency flotation system? I am glad that software engineers are at least this competent, I can't imagine the chaos if the system decided to blindly trust sensors like this.
