What are people using for tires these days..?

Hoping to keep it in $1k or around there or even a budget set….got a backup set of wheels (rs5 rotors)and would like to find some decent tires…my current wheels have Michelin PSS all season but curious what else is out there maybe even budget minded…I’m looking at a 265/35/20 all season tire

i am on my second set of yokohoma ADVAN Sport A/S+ 19" paid 800 out the door installed at discount tire during a sale. I llive in hot climate , but they handled well in torrential rain going 60 on highway no problem. they're rated for 50,000 miles, but mine wore to 4/32 by just a bit under 30,000 miles. I do drive on various types of roads, some beautiful, some badly damaged. I also only rotated them twice and didn't stay on top of air pressure .

I run conti extremecontact DWS06 on a half dozen of my cars and couldn't be happier with them for all season driving. Winter, summer, doesn't matter, they don't let me down. For winter only tires, I run conti vikingcontact, turns an allroad into a snowmobile. For summer only, I run conti extremecontact sport. I didn't mean to become a conti fanboy but these tires seem to be extremely resistant to my states crap roads and tread wear characteristics are excellent in my experience.

Thanks Audibot….i had Vredesteins all seasons on my old b8 s4, they were great….when i looked them up on Tirerack for the size I want with my s6 now they were more than the Yokohama Advan by $200, I just grabbed a set of those

Nah, as in C5 RS 6. And I'll clarify: When I purchased my car, it came with the Yokohamas on it. I def noticed I could not carve up bends as well as I should be able to, so I've since swapped to Conti ExtremeContact Sport 02s. Much better tire and haven't hit the limit yet like I did on the Yokos (makes sense going from a/s to summer)

They're great. Car grips like a gecko.
Also has a good strong sidewall so you get good steering and feedback.

I did not like DWS06s on other cars in the past. Grippy and comfy but squishy and not confidence inspiring at the limit.

You blew right by OP's budget. I don't disagree with your selection (have driven both on my A6), but they def go over budget in the size specified.

I do agree with you that they are a little squishy (lol) when pushing them, they are more of a swiss army knife tire that just seems to handle every road condition (which we get in Michigan, sometimes we get every condition from ice to snow to slush to rain in the same day) quite well. Definitely not a super high performance tire but I am extremely happy with them as an all season tire.

I had the michelin pilot sports on my C7 S6 originally, and later switched to the conti extremecontact sport when they were on sale on Tire Rack. I really can't say whether I notice a difference between the two, but I really only truly "use" my torque vectoring differential a few times a month in the summer and fall, so I'm not the best person to have an opinion on them. The conti's were quite affordable compared to the michelins when I bought them, though.

that's my logic for why i got a fluidampr instead of the other cheaper pulley options.

If I lived in a region that required having a set of winter tires or was a track kind of guy, I would take your advice and use the yokos for a backup set :p but if that was the case i would also be getting hotter soccer moms and live in a more opulent home.

Conti DSW 06+. I want more traction so I don't spin off the line, but I also drive in slush and snow occassionally. I'm on 6 year old Contis right now, so they need replacing. Not because the tire is worn, you can easily see the "DWS" indicator, but because the compound is old. As far as handling goes, i feel very confident with the tire. I think i've barely slid in a corner and the car has springs and a swaybar. I think I'm going to go Conti again and do a small burnout before I launch as opposed to spending more money and trying the Michelins. A lot of comparisons between the two are old comparisons and do not use the newer Contis. Newer comparisons with the new Contis put them on par. I think I would rather spend the extra money on a CWA 100 or something.

Nankang are great budget tires. Better than most. They are a proven brand and highly respected in the time attack scene. I had them on my previous D2 S8.

Op, also look into Falken fk460's or Cooper Zeon RS3-G1. I just put the Falkens on my girlfriends Levante and they are awesome so far. I just got the Coopers for my A6 because Walmart has a rollback on them in 255/35 but the 265/35 are $205/per.

I had Continental Control Contact all season 19s on my old A7. They did decent winter and summer and got me 60,000+ miles out of each set. The new ride (2015 Mas Ghibli) has Michelins on it, can't remember the model though and I am too lazy to go look in the garage.

Check your area for sales to see what you can find. Discount Tire is always running holiday rebates. Some places will have buy 3 and get the 4th free.

I just recalled something worth mentioning regarding the Conti DWS06 - If you live somewhere that sees large temperature swings all the time (I am in MI) sometimes you get this "cold shake" from the tire cooling down from a hot state to the cold overnight ambient temperature and developing "cold flat spots"; When you first start to drive, you will feel something that almost feels like a mild imbalance. This was worse on the original generation of DWS06 tires but has gotten better with the new ones. In my case it lasts no more than 1-2 miles before it's gone and I have found numerous writeups that have given me confidence that it is totally normal. Every set of DWS06 I have worn through has done this, usually all spring, and all fall, less noticeable in winter, and not at all in the summer.
FWIW if you watch Tire Rack these tires seem to go on sale regularly (as well as quite a few other brands) and last fall I was able to put 19" DWS06 on my car for just over $200 per tire, shipped. They also regularly do this thing with a cash back credit card if you purchase 4. I had a friend mount them and despite his balancer being rather old (no "road force" balancing at all) they seem to be balanced quite well. I don't know what you guys think about Tire Rack but my experience with them (including using their Road Hazard protection for free tire replacement) has been great.

I ran Conti SureContactRx 255/40 ZR 19 100Y's with my Bently wheels for the last 2 years. Firm and smooth.

I have a set of Lexani LX-Twenty 255/40R19 100W on a set of A6 prestige wheels. They run smooth, softer compared Conti's. Little heavier. $439.00 shipped on amazon....

My mk2 Jetta has 15x8's with Lexani LXTR-203 205/50R15 89V XL's.... Smooth ride as well, super happy.


I think even with cheap tires, aligning the yellow dots to the valve stems and a good road force balance goes a long way.

Im running the same on my car. My first set of them and am super happy although they are expensive in the great white north.

For winters I run nokian hakkapeliitta. Last winter was my first year with them but unfortunately we got only like 1 day of snow so I didnt really get a chance to test them out.

I agree. Ive ran Michelin(X-Ice 3? I think, hated them in every scenario), Falken(Surprisingly one of the best snow tires I had), Khumo, no name china, etc over the last 20+ years and they are so far my favorite.

Just got my new Conti DSW 06+. 3800 launch with slight wheelspin. As usual the car is quieter and has a smoother ride due to the new rubber. I'm pretty happy. I can't say if there was a difference over the old non plus Contis because since they were older/used, it might not be a fair comparison.

I have been really happy with my Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 4s, now on my second set. Great dry weather grip that's comparable to some summer tyres whilst still being usable in the winter (drove up to Vermont last winter on them and didn't regret leaving my winter rubber at home).

Streets are filled with ice? Game on! Well unless you live in the upper beaches because that downhill is like San Francisco in a few spots. Low team will have a problem skating uphill with the puck.
