    2010 Q5 3.2l starter problem

So my q5 left me stranded a couple weeks ago and I have it in a lot of pieces trying to replace the starter. I've got 12v on the power cable at the starter, and I get 12v to the solenoid When the key is depressed. The problem I'm having is that I can't get the starter out. I've got about 12 hours in this and am to the point that both starter bolts are removed. When I try to pry the starter out it pulls it's self back in like the gear is stuck on the ring gear (I think that's what it's called). It feels like I'm pulling against the spring. I've got the new starter here but it seems like it's stuck in there. I'm hoping someone here knows a trick or way out of this. Any help tips or ideas is greatly appreciated. This starter has been ridiculous to get to so far.

At 25 seconds, that's the visual with the starter out. It should just pull forward as I understand it. You see the teeth of the engine drive plate there. Have you tried to manually turn the engine over to rotate that plate? (always only turn the engine in the direction of normal engine rotation)

At 48 seconds, that's a visual of the starter rear (to the left). The starter cog is retracted there, and extends "rearward" when the starter is operated to engage the teeth of the drive plate.

Can't say what might be at play there; starter is something I've not had to deal with yet on my B8.
