    New Engine Options

2017 Audi Q5 3.0T with 120k miles. I got a misfire on Cylinder 3. I brought it to a shop, and they basially told me there was something wrong with the long block as there's 0 compression in Cylinder 3 and 90 PSI on Cylinders 1 and 2. Compression test and leak test were conducted. They said I needed a new engine, which would be somewhere in the 20k range, which obviously wouldn't be worth it. I just wanted to see what my options are. How much does a used engine cost? Is it worth it to get a new engine or to sell it as is. I'm running a dual pulley 034Motorport tune with tons of modifications. Thanks for reading. I'm stressed out trying to figure out what to do. I've had this car from new.

Can't speak to the economics side of this situation.

The engine is a CTUC, so any 3.0T from a B8.5 (MY13-MY17) Q5 3.0T or SQ5 3.0T would be a direct swap (different exhaust manifolds for the under 300hp CTUC, so you'd swap yours over if you pick up a CTUD; or leave it be since you're tuning past 300hp). You'd probably find a CTUB from a MY14-MY16 S4 or MY14-MY17 S5 to also be a direct sub (CTUB shares the CTUD exhaust manifolds, so you'd again swap yours over, or not; you might also have to swap your drive plate over if the S4/S5 had a 6MT).

As to how did your engine nuke itself, no idea. But as soon as you said dual pulley tune, well, there's certainly no surprise anymore. I thought cyl 6 was the notorious one on these engines. Is it rebuildable, vs needing a replacement, no idea. But be sure to look through the B8 S4 and B8 S5 forums as well for similar situations.

We are in the same boat. See my separate thread here about Engine Codes. Mine failed from piston ring land seizure of rings, but on the other bank. I'm trying to find a low mileage CTUC or CTUD used engine. Expect to pay $4000 to $6000 plus shipping depending on condition and mileage. And, then the labor. I have a shop looking for one through his sources.

Were you able to find an engine to swap out? Are you going to do the labor yourself or through a shop?

I am travelling now on business. I have a good shop doing the work. We have located several potential donor engines. I'll get back to the shop when I return.

Yes, I did locate an engine in Houston at an auto salvage company. I has just been delivered. About 65k miles on it. CTUC code same as mine. I normally do my own wrenching, but this is a bit too much for me at age 74. So I'm using a respected independent shop.

An update for my Q5. I took it to another shop and they diagnosed it as needing new injectors. I didn't need a new engine. They installed the new injectors and it's working as good as new now. Lol. I guess always get a second opinion.

Glad to hear that. I just pushed it too hard too many times for too long on a dual pulley tune. 100,000 miles on a tune that aggressive may be all to reasonably expect if one has a heavy right foot.

Yeah agreed, how the heck did they get 0 compression on one cylinder?? They must have messed up that test.
