    Windshield replaced by Safelite

So a rock chip turned into a huge crack across the windshield of my car over the last two months. I've been hesitant about getting it replaced because I was worried about getting an aftermarket windshield due to everything I've read on here, basically stating that only OEM will work with HUD and ACC etc. I have a C7.5 prestige with HUD, ACC, lane assist, brake guard and the acoustic windshield which I think all prestige trims have. Eventually the crack just got too big so I called up Geico to see if I could convince them to give me an OEM replacement. The person I spoke to did their due diligence to see if an OEM would be needed given the options on my car and spoke to someone in their parts department who assured her that these days HUD is very common and even recalibrating is not an issue (another thing that I read only the dealer can do). Worst case scenario nothing works and they have to redo the replacement with an OEM, not ideal but at least I'd get the proper windshield.

So I drop off the car, come back the next day and before I even walk into Safelite I pass by my car to look at the windshield stamp. To my surprise it said Pilkington (same brand as I originally had, just without an Audi rings stamp) and had an A that indicates it's acoustic. I even looked at the edge of the windshield from the top corner and sure enough I could see that it was double paned. Drove my car into work and everything seems to be working properly.

Long story short, if you have to get your windshield replaced and insurance is saying it has to be aftermarket don't be afraid because it likely will be Pilkington just without the Audi premium.

I always have my glass guy insist on OEM for windshields. Had one replacement by safelite 18 years ago that was aftermarket on my 350z and the wind noise drove me nuts lol. Current glass guy I use is phenomenal tho.

I had it done by Safelite and they said OEM was not a problem, and the insurance was fine with it as well. They did a good job and calibrated the ACC.

I have a $0 deductible on windshield replacement and while I still had my B8.5 allroad, I noticed that somehow the corner of my glass, right by the firewall/fender was chipped (wish I knew how that happened). Called State Farm and put a claim in, with me insisting on Pilkington/OE windshield. Once I had my windshield replaced and was driving home, I suddenly noticed I could visibly see frits (the tiny dots) on the bottom of my windshield by my dash, along with very very slight warping/bending. I checked the brand and it was "Fuyao".

I called the local glass place and they said they were told to install Fuyao glass. I explained to them what I was noticing compared to my OE glass, they said they would take everything from there and handle insurance for me. Without me even picking up the phone to call State Farm, they told me to come back about a week or two later and got an Audi-stamped windshield installed. They were able to say that my windshield was a safety concern since it could affect my rain sensor, and they even installed a brand new rain sensor (not just gel) along with fixing the back-side of the mirror trim I had previously broke. Needless to say I returned with a dozen donuts and a 5-star review for them. I let my family know to go to them for anything windshield-related and I'll be returning if I ever have windshield issues in the future.
