    Swap Macan 2.0 Brakes on '09 A4

Guest-only advertisement. Register or Log In now!
Hello all. I have been doing a ton of research, but wanted to get some insight and confirm what I need.

I recently found a great deal on Front and Rear caliper set from a 2.0 Macan to use a big brake kit for my A4 ($600 total). I know the front calipers are the same fitment as the Q5, which should make it compatible with an A4. I plan to purchase new brake bads, rotors (345mm), and all accessories for a q5 front brake setup to use on this swap. Is that the correct approach?

Additionally, what would it take to retrofit the macan rear brake calipers to the car? I don't necessarily need to do this swap, but if it isn't painful, would proceed. Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure the 2.0 has the 320mm brake rotor. I think the 3.0 has the 345mm rotor.

Great thread here that will answer all of your questions!

the Macan 2.0 has the same rotor as the q5 3.0, which is a plus! I just ordered the full set of front and rear pads for Macan 2.0-- hope all works out. Will definitely report back. A lot of the threads criss-cross about discussing s4 versus a4. Hopefully I can shine light on the experience for a b8 a4.

Cool! Good to know. For the rears - you will probably need the larger vented rear rotors to fit the rear Macan calipers.

Having all the specs for the components is key here. Sounds like you are on the right track!

A4 and S4 are the same vehicle from a brakes perspective. A4 2.0T will tend to have the 320x30 front and 300x12 rear pairing; A4/S4 3.0T will tend to have 345x30 front and 330x22 rear pairing. But the mounting points for the caliper brackets and the wheel hubs and the brake lines and all are the same.

The Macan 2.0T uses a 345x30, yes. But the B8 vehicles didn't change to that spec rotor (AE/AF) until Jun '11. The B8 345x30 prior to that date use a different caliper, caliper bracket, and rotor vs after that date. But you're replacing all of those pieces with matched components, so that won't matter.

On a tuned car, be just as good if not better to go A6 calipers. Stock isn't worth it unless you're going for the wow factor.

The A6 calipers are only 2 piston and heavy AF (SQ5 380mm even heavier) as well as limiting to wheel options compared to the Macan/Q5 4 piston Brembo, the latter is light, compact, uses S4 spec rotors and has tons of pad options as the form factor is used by many manufacturers for their performance products.

I agree that 'upgrading" from an A4 B8 stock brake set up to the same period S4 larger diametre discs, you can feel the added unsprung weight in suspension movements. It is all significantly heavier than a stock A4, tho' I did not actually drop the load onto a scale. Overall, for me, it was an economical upgrade that was worth it for the better 'feel' under your boot. The car stops when you ask it to. But, next time I'll go with lighter front callipers to reduce the unsprung weight.

It may be commonly known but the standard S4 callipers up front are physically the same as an A4 but without the black paint and S4 logo.

Dimension-wise, I went from a stock 2012 A4 B8's 320mm/30mm front and 300mm/12mm rear discs, to an S4's 345mm/30 front and 330mm/22mm rear discs with rear S4 callipers. Sizes are as noted in this thread above.

Using Zimmerman coat Z (nothing fancy) rotors as a reference point, the 320x30 is ~10.0 kg and the 345x45 is ~11.0 kg. Checking Brembo, we see the same weight specs. It's curious to note the pre-Jun '11 rotors in both cases are about 0.2 kg lighter than the post-Jun '11 rotors. The calipers for both are the same TRW single 57mm piston floating design.

Cross post from Nano999's original thread.

I just ordered everything to do all four corners with 2015-18 Porsche Macan (base, 2.0L) calipers. Nano999's excellent head start and classicrl45's picture of the rear caliper pushed me over the edge. I put a parts list together and have it posted in my build thread - here. I will not get to install the new brakes until the motor and suspension work is done. Fingers crossed.

Except for the rear calipers (explained in thread), all parts are new. I got these on Ebay (they are pulls from the same vehicle - a 2018 Porsche Macan Base 2.0L with 38,000 miles.)
