Wish I knew about this for my first Allroad--was too hot on my thigh. Ironically, my 05's driver seat is torn to shreds but the heated seat is still great.

Try buying a toyota SUV/truck, washing it all the time, caring for it well, and having the frame rust completely through and break before the vehicle is 8 years old. I know a crazy number of people who have ended up in this situation including myself with a low mileage 4runner that didn't have a spot of rust on the body but frame rusted from the inside out before 7 years/100k miles. Toyota pretended to care back when they replaced the frames in the older 4runners and tacomas but finally won against the customer in court for the 03+ 4runners and as a result will never lose in "court" again and I get to park a beautiful looking 4runner V8 with 105k miles out back, never to be driven again. People already posting pictures of 2018+ tacoma/4runner with rusted through frames and they are SOL. At least we can almost always get 20 years out of our older audis without any major problems. Nothing made after the late 2000's/early 2010's will ever last that long again.

I scooped up an '05 4.2 Ebony Pearl Effect AR while parting out my '05 2.7 Ebony Pearl Effect AR...

I posted the 4.2 for sale on Marketplace a few months ago but couldn't convince myself to part with it. I told every interested buyer that the car would ruin their lives. What is it with these stupid cars? Mine has 221k miles. I'm tempted to sell my 6MT B8.5 S4 and daily the V8 because I love it so much.

Buddy, I'm right there with you, this is how I ended up with 3 V8's and 3 2.7T's in the barn. Most of them are driveable and just have normal issues that need fixed, but I've been working on other projects over the past year. Would I consider getting rid of a few so that I have more space in the shop to get these other projects done? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!! xD

I’ve driven my B8 S4 3 times in the last 6 weeks just because I need to keep it active. I keep telling my wife the same thing and she doesn’t want me to sell the B8. Those of us left, are a certain kind of special. Avantly is in a league of his own, I wish I could join

I recently found a very well maintained C5 RS6 with an 01E swap and I am SO tempted to sell the B8!

Goodness gracious I want a C5 RS6. My first Audi (that infected me with this incurable disease) was a dolphin gray metallic on black '04 A6 S-line with literally every option including the sport seats (they look no different than S6/RS6 seats other than the pin striping and badging). I parked that thing in the shop about 7 years ago and fogged the cylinders and valvetrain due to turbo failure and it has been sitting ever since. That is the only C5 sedan I have and the only other C5 sedan I will ever buy is the RS6. That S-line is waiting on me to go through every single bolt, every single wire, I will pull the subframes and recoat them, not a spot on that car will be untouched and I will restore it to its former glory +K04's and some other fun stuff. As I grow older, if I have to get rid of some cars, that one will be the last to go, I will still drive it when I am 80, dammit. If they outlaw gasoline vehicles on the road, my last day will resemble something from mad max as I blast down the freeway in that car with no emissions components whatsoever, listening to my favorite song and drinking my favorite coffee as the rechargeable helicopters pursue me, preparing to fire their laser-based vaccination weapons of death to send me back home where I belong :-)

Can agree--love my RS6! I was looking into picking up a 6-speed swapped one when I bought mine (which isn't swapped), but I guess it's a good thing I didn't because that one caught fire, sadly. But drove it from north of Bellevue back to Baltimore and she was flawless. And she did well at Tail of the Dragon as well.

User 2.ohhh did his own 01E RS6 and I was fortunate enough to ride in it before he sold. Thing RIPPED. Sadly, not enough highway before he ran out, still in 4th.

My problem with the 6MT has always been the whole "not having 3+ hands" thing. Ceramic coffee mug goes in right hand, steering wheel in left, what am I supposed to shift with??? Maybe I'm just getting old.

If you're careful, you can use the cupholder in the center console storage. Def not ideal though.

That said, manual conversion really wakes the RS up.

I get it! This 4.2 AR is my 2nd automatic in my 22 years of driving and it’s really nice for my daily. I miss shifting gears, but I’ve finally gotten used to the auto and it’s really nice.

I have never trusted the dash cup holder. It has too much flex and every one I’ve seen is broken in some fashion.

On the subject of Dona, no check engine light for B2S2 O2 since the fuel cleaner. I wonder if I got some water or poor fuel in the tank from my fill-up before heading over the mountain. Fingers crossed she stays happy. I really don’t want to have to deal with that before an engine pull in the future.

Part of me also really wonders if my cats are just shot and that’s the real issue…

Are you in an emissions area? I am not and generally pull the cats off of my older cars and scrap them, if you need 4.2 cats I have 3 complete sets so let me know, I can check date codes on the cats on my cars. I would wonder if some of them have been replaced due to where they came from. All of my Audis are from WA/OR/CA/CO/MT and I only drive one specific car in the winter so the only corrosion will be from condensation and combustion.

I am, unfortunately. I’m in Portland, OR, according to the post office. Right on the border of a county that doesn’t require DEQ testing. With that said, my B8 S4 has a new set of CAP test pipes and my 2.7T has some XS Power down pipes going on it.

How difficult is the catalytic converter removal on these, Avantly? My B8 S4 was a total See You Next Tuesday and I’m not ready to do something like that again any time soon.

Thank you for the offer. I may need to take you up on it. I’m debating making some piggie pipes and getting O2 spacers and tackling 2 birds with one stone, if my O2 sensor is on the fritz. Because guess what, the CEL came back on Friday evening coming home from the hospital. Womp!

That's an unfortunate problem you have there. I tend to drink iced coffee instead of hot, so don't have that issue.

New fuel filter after the Liqui Moly Fuel System Cleaner. Fair amount of very fine gunk came out with some brown fuel from the old Hengst filter. Not original, but not sure when it was changed. Oddly, someone had purposefully put packing tape around the old filter before installing it. Maybe so it didn’t get stuck to the bracket? Not sure. Peculiar.

Why a triple square? Seriously!? Just not necessary! I was expecting a torx, but it’s been 4 years since I did the 2.7 now.

And they’re always rusty. Thread chased like a dream, but looks like it’s been rode hard and put away wet.

And she’s been back on for a few days now. Cleared it again and now I’m confident this will be in my future.

I also think it’s about time I just suck it up and download some repair manuals for these C5 and my B8. I’m sick of searching and searching the forums. The V8 Allroad is proving to be just as fun as my 2.7, as far as unique parts goes. I did this to myself, haha.

Note: while changing the fuel filter I could see up to my drive shaft and it has circular marks on the rear section maybe a foot from the rear differential and right before the mufflers. The whole under side of the vehicle is soaked in oil from neglect, I’ve pulled the belly pans to get a better idea of where now. I’m hoping it’s oil spray that has left marks as the shaft spins, but it could also be from rubbing like on a heat shield or something. Vibration source!? We shall see. Nail bitter…!

I nabbed one off the internet a few years ago and while it has several hundred pages, it doesn’t list procedures. It’s great for some things, but not most. I want something like ElsaWin or whatever it is.

You can get a 1-day (or more) subscription to Audi erWin and download all the PDF manuals there. It usually takes a day to gain access because there is a person in the middle to approve it, but once you're in, you can get manuals for as many cars as you can in that period.

I also have a AR 4.2 since 4 weeks now. Just replace the chain. I can tell you, the engine is more worth then the car, if the engine dies I think the AR is financially totalled. Lol it was a hard pill for me to swallow. Anyhows, best of luck with your AR she looks good and you put alot of effort in it! :)

YOU have done a lot of work! Thank you for the compliments.
How did your job go? Did you pull the engine and transmission out or drop it down with the subframe?

Well, Dona is being a C5. She had a good run, but will be down and out for a minute. My accessory belt is torn. Boo. Anyone with a recommendation on how to solve the accessory belt issues? I see JHM has an auto tensioner solution which requires a hefty install, ECS offers a Kevlar belt kit similarly priced but still it’s ECS , or I can just replace the belt and send the roller and tensioner.

Got a rear break kit off FCP for $100. I really want to flush the system out and see if that improves my breaking. The breaks are trash, with lots of pulsating at stop, fade, and very slow engagement on this big car. I want to get a front kit, do a full flush, and see how she goes. After my Cougar Chemicals Saber Tire and Wheel Cleaner and a good wash, the pulsating was much better, but the rear pads are toast and all the rotors have giant lips. Time for a total overhaul if I’m hauling precious cargo. New guide pin bushings and hardware to boot. I ordered 2 rear sets to get all the components and have a backup set of bushes. Who knows…

I really like this box, but I won’t like what’s inside. My rear driver window gets off track going up and subsequently I’ve only opened it twice. My 2 year old son just flipped around in his car seat and I need a window for him. Who knew a regulator could come so nicely boxed? Wow, this is gonna suck. I had a game plan beer just to help cope.

Oh, I also got a couple rear hatch door panel emergency triangle hatch latches. Haha. You know what I mean. Mine came duct taped closed. The rear hatch panel is rough. I’d like to replace it one day. Maybe when I fix my rear window wiper washer tubing.

    C5’s forever!

On my car (2001 A6 2.7T), I replace the accessory belt when I change the timing belt, and the accessory belt tensioner was a little noisy, so I replaced it. I've never had any issues with the accessory belt, so do you think something is missaligned or dragging on yours? I think that it wouldn't hurt to replace the accessory belt tensioner if you have never replaced it.

Definitely on the same thought process Jim. It’s more a matter of the OE tensioner being a manual tensioner that needs adjustment periodically and costs $250, versus a replacement or aftermarket setup which should hopefully improve the situation, but also cost $250. ECS Kevlar belt shouldn’t stretch as much and should be stronger overall, but ECS. JHM’s kit looks the best because it uses a new auto tensioner, but it requires modifying the core support and trans cooler lines being bent out of the way. I also think their belt is unique and I couldn’t source it quickly.

There is absolutely no room on the V8, so I’ll have to pull the front end off or put it in service position before I really have a good idea of what’s going on. I took a slow motion video with my phone and it looks like there’s a 2” tear in the belt and it’s slapping everything as it goes around and has begun to fray now. I have no idea what happened or why it tore. For all I know it’s been torn and I probably couldn’t hear it well with the belly pans on. Once they came off to investigate my oil leak, which I’m pretty sure is running down the front of the engine block because it’s the oil filter housing o-rings, I started hearing it. More to come.

Welp, she’s gonna stay on jack stands for another 2 weeks or so. We’ll see.

Bumper bolt works wonderfully as a service position guide.

Belt damage. I had to cut it off because the tensioner has failed.

My Litens tensioner that is stripped and won’t pivot.

Little bench scrub. Nice tensioner, it was just over tightened and is now caked in oily based grit.

So I’ve ordered up a JHM auto tensioner 5 rib belt conversion. And a 034 snub mount. My snub mount is non-existent. I’ll take a picture on the way back in. That could help my vibration!

Found a Google Drive link on Facebook and downloaded BAS and APB/BEL repair manuals for Engine, Fuel and ignition, Generic Scan Tool, and DTC’s. Yeow!

I planned to travel the next weekend to my hometown for my mother?s retirement party and that?s where I found it. I bought this 45 minutes before the party and drove my grandma there. All lined up!

I won?t forget about the 2.7 (Dana) but she has to take a small backseat position for a bit while I knock out some small maintenance and scrape up more project car funds.
When your gut is telling you to be careful you should be, good on you for listening to your instincts on that one, looks like you got a good one there anyways! I also get priority and funds, hence why the RS6 is still sitting in the back of the shop for now, even though i do drive it time to time to get it moving, despite being on limp mode. I will be reading through your post a little more, hope all is well and good continuation to you!

this exact thing happened to my wife a few years back on the passenger seat as we were driving to visit family. All the sudden i heard her shout a healthy ouch and it had put a hole in her sweater as well! 4 month later it was my turn on the driver side, felt it getting really hot on one spot and i turned it off, knowing right away what was happening. luckily, i had purchase a set of euro seats for the RS6 so i ended up doing an almost full RS6 interior swap in the Allroad.

Everything is just sooo wet and saturated. Actually getting into this is giving me PTSD from my 2.7 tear down. I spent a good hour picking chunks of grime out of cracks and from behind the accessory belt system. I collected a golf ball sized ball of “belt dough”

    Snub mount…

    I just had to laugh…

Cleaning, my favorite part of working on Audis…

Paint penned the witness marks for reinstall of the snub mount cage.

The bolt circled in green was not fun. I had to install the mount as one unit due to space so the bolt needed to be pre-installed behind the snub mount. Then, the snub mount prevented the Allen key from seating well. So I jimmied.

Jimmy. Bent the shit out of my 1/4” wrench trying to “torque” it down. Which I then had to double down on for the auto tensioner retaining bolt due to space. Same concept just with a 6mm hex security bit and not an 8mm. Boy howdy was I so stoked to see my set went all the way up to 8mm. Haha. Lots of box-end wrench use for leverage on this job and security bits.

Home sweet home. So I Googled for like an hour and never found an answer, but eventually came to terms with my decision on: which way does the damn snub mount actually go!? I’ve debated this for like 20 years now! Justin Ballou says short end toward engine block on his B5 S4, but I see others do it long side toward the engine block. Does it matter and who actually knows this answer!?

I did fit the auto-tensioner, JHM bracket, and the new belt after more cleaning of my pulleys and area code for the accessory belt, but I ran out of steam at 1:00am, and 5:00am comes way too early on my solo-dad weekends. I’ll keep my fingers crossed and hopefully fit the carrier up in the next few days. JHM says you need to trim the core support and bend some trans cooler lines, but I really think that’s for the B6/B7. While my C5 is extremely tight, it appears the tensioner clears everything but maybe the little tab on the top of the snub mount cage. I’m not even sure it serves a purpose so I can lop it off if need be, but I’m really hoping nothing is needed

wow that destroyed snub mount is insane. Now I wonder what mine looks like. I know from the service records that my previous owner went through a couple of driver side engine mounts, no idea the nature of the problem that he was trying to solve. But in 23 years maybe a new snub is in order too?

Thanks! It’s always fun having something new, so I feel slightly more motivated. I’m also pending sale of my B8 S4, of course right when my C5 goes down, so push is coming to shove to get my new daily back up.

    Sell the B8->Finish the 2.7->Swap the 4.2

Inorite!? Worst one I’ve ever seen. I imagine a shot engine mount can contribute to excess wear, especially as it’s centered toward the passenger’s side some causing it to rotate and wobble front to back. Ha!
Go check it out and report back. I’m curious to hear. It looked like my core support had been off before, probably for timing, but that sucker had to be from the factory.

Have a feeling snub mount is on my list. No idea if the previous owner changed anything, but with 265k, I'm willing to take a bet that's where I'm at.

I broke a center cap. Well, I think my son did when he fixed my valve stem, but none the less it’s broken. Part number 8D0601170A for the 18” wheels which usually came on the 4.2 Allroad. I just super glued it to the wheel…

All buttoned up and fired up. Everything idles smoothly with no issues. I pulled her out of the garage for some shenanigans, and will test drive later. I hope the snub mount makes a difference with my vibration I’m also happy to report, things fit up fine with the short side towards the block and the rounded edge toward the block

Oh, I also replaced the latch for my hazard triangle on the rear hatch

Happy to report that Dona drives better than ever! Snub mount was at the heart of my shimmy and shake. I still feel a little something getting up to freeway speeds, but it’s likely suspension related. And, if those bushes are anything like the snub mount, they’ll be shot.

Welp, I sold my B8 S4 today that I’ve owned for a little over 9 years. It was a sad day to watch her drive away, but one less hungry mouth to feed and a lot more funds to finish up my projects.

Dona’s CEL came back on and this time it’s for B2S1 and B2S2. I got a new battery for my car laptop finally and was able to check things out via VCDS properly without it “locking” on me every few minutes.

The S1 is new and it makes me wonder if something more is afoot here. I decided to check my measuring blocks for timing and am kinda bummed I did haha.

Measuring blocks 91 and 92 appear to be OK. Car was warm as I’d run some errands just prior. If I’m understanding this correctly, which is a task, when the engine is at temperature the cam locking pins release and the intake cam adjusters can move freely. I’d like to take a look at a cold start in the morning to see if there is a change when the pins lock for cold start. “Load” is adjustment to the intake cam as the engine idled, not engine load. And it’s not in degrees, but I don’t know what it’s actually measuring there. They were at times very close and other times 8-9 degrees off. Hmm.
This is just a snapshot, but Bank 2 did seem to have a 0.5 larger range of variance for requested cam adjustment versus actual as shown in cells 3 & 4, but overall they were both within 1.5 degrees.
Measuring block 93 shows a different story. I’d assume that needing 8 degrees of adjustment for my B1 intake came is not ideal, but I don’t really have an acceptable range for that. Bank 2 at 4 degrees seems acceptable, especially for 205,000 miles, but again I don’t know.
I want to assume by MB 91 & 92 that my B2 was having an issue maintaining timing and appears sluggish in response relative to B1, but if B1 needs 8 degrees of adjustment my chain may have stretch or there could be worn guides on B1. With that said, maybe my adjuster on B2 is also having its own issue controlling oil flow and that’s why I see it lagging behind in adjustments relative to B1 again.

If anyone has info who can help me understand this more concrete I’d appreciate it. I’m going to start diving into the B6/B7 threads now, wish me luck 🫡
