    Airbag removal - stumped

    Hey All,

I’m trying to get my airbag off so that I can install a the adapter from Ambrace to enable drive select on my steering wheel.

I’ve watched every DIY/How-to on C7 A6 airbag removal and every one shows that you rotate the steering wheel 90degrees (facing up and down) and you should see a wire or retaining clip on the back of the wheel you press down on with a screwdriver to release each side of the airbag.

    Screenshot for the YouTube video:

Awkward maneuver but simple enough, except the back of my steering wheel doesn’t look like that. I have this metal lug in the way which prevents me from getting at the wire.
Has anyone dealt with this and figured out how to get the airbag off?

The metal lug is the post that's attached to the airbag that grabs onto the retaining wire to hold it in place with a notch.

You can see it in this photo.

It might be just a matter of getting enough clearance to push the wire down far enough to clear the notch.
Try moving the steering column down also, might give you better access if you haven't done so already.

Ah this makes so much sense now. The wire comes off of the metal peg. I’ll try again. Thank you!

It helps to push in on the airbag at same time you are attempting to release the wire.
