What is this- Ambient temp sensor?

I noticed this part just sitting behind my radiator in the support. It is just lying there with two wires connected to it. My center display in the gauge cluster isn't working, but looks like the temp is displaying properly.

Its exactly what your title says. Its the ambient temp sensor, its supposed to be mounted up front of the radiator on a bracket with the PS cooler. But I moved mine into the engine bay to get an idea of underhood temps/ intake air temps

Great that's what I thought. Does this or the G89 sensor have an influence over the AC? My AC seems a little weak, wanted to address some sensors before recharging. The info I have found seems to mention both. My center display is blank but I can catch it in the right light and make out some pixels. I believe the temp in the display is correct or close. This leads me to think the ambient sensor is good. Not sure if there is a way to check the G89 sensor.

When I had problems with the G89 sensor (which is under the pollen filter at the passenger side) on my 2001.5 S4, the air conditioning stopped working completely instead of just being weak. I included some threads on the temp sensors below, but if the G89 sensor is bad, then usually the temp reading in the dash will be way off. Anyway, if you can, scan your car for codes. - Jim

You can check what the sensors are reading in the climate control.

Great link! I'll check this out tomorrow to see if the sensor is reading correctly.

What he^ said ,both will affect the A/C's auto system. It uses outside temp and alongside internal temp sensor and the clock/date to determine sun position , flap positions , how much to blow etc.

I would not suggest putting it in engine bay as it again it will influence other systems. Your ECU already knows IAT's and will change stuff accordingly.
