Issues with 2009 Q7 in limp mode

Hello all, I have been having issues with my 2009 Audi Q7. The EPC light is on and it seems to bne in "limp mode"

I have alot of codes here but I need know which ones to concentrate on to get this vehicle running again.

I found something on the Ross-Tech site stating in the special notes: " When found in CAN protocol 01-Engine controllers such as the (BHK) 3.6L VR6 ( 4L ) chassis Q7 with all zero coding try entering valid coding followed by a key cycle and Throttle Body Alignment. This control module allowed 005696 to be cleared after doing so"

Hopefully not sounding too dumb here. This throttle body has not been changed on the vehicle. I did remove the battery cables and clean the throttle body, but until after I received this code. Not sure what I need to do to "try entering valid coding", and I am not sure what they mean by a key cycle. Is this a key procedure of some sort?

I cannot adapt the throttle body w/o first clearing this code, from what I have read.

Any help with where to start would be greatly appreciated

The code that sticks out to me is :



005696 - Internal Control Module

P1640 - 008 - EEPROM Error

This code is usually associated with a bad Engine computer or the circuit(s) involved with the ECU.
Seeing you are in the US, the ecu lives on the passenger side under the rain tray. I would start there and check the ecu for water intrusion. There is also a main ground located right next to the ecu.
Im not too family with the 3.6L layout as to where other grounds are located at, but most electrical problems are caused by a bad ground.
The other codes I would investigate would be:
the throttle stop code. Try cleaning the throttle body to see if it is sticking. If you have a scope or a way to graph multimeter data you could check to see if it operates as its suppose to electrically.

The engine control module code in the ABS module also points to a faulty ecu or circuitry.

Last code I would look into is in the trunk electronics:
00456 - Control Module for Access and Start Control (J518)

004 - No Signal/Communication - Intermittent

I'm not quite sure if that could/would cause the limp mode situation, but it would something I'd look into. Once again possibly a circuitry issue.

What it means is if in the engine module coding, if all the numbers are 0000000, then to try and put the proper coding number in. If it takes the coding, then you shut the key off, after a few seconds you turn it back on, go back in vcds and do a throttle body alignment.
I'm unsure if you'll need to clear the code before you do the TB Alignment

THank you very much for the response. I will check for the grounds on the ECU, and the other you mentioned in the trunk Electronics ( I have not looked in the trunk much ). I did take off the throttle body to clean it. I checked the six pin connector to the throttle body, and of the two wires going to the throttle body motor, one had ground, and the other had 4 volts. The other four pins, anoyther had 4 volts and the other three went to ground.

I will also try the coding you mentioned on the throttle body, if I can get the 005696 - Internal Control Module P1640 - 008 - EEPROM Error code deleted. Thanks again for the tips.

To you or anyone else who may be reading, before this issue I had sunroof drain issues, and the drivers floor was getting wet, and this caused a "Gearbox malfunction" light to appear, and the vehicle would not crank until it dried out. THe dash lights would come on, but that is all. I fixed the drains, and no more water entering the cabin. Vehicle ran good for two days with no issues, then this new issue arose. I removed the drivers side seat and checked all wiring under seat and on the floor going toward the left kick panel, and I see no obvious issues.

I will keep you updated if I figure anything out.

THank you very much for the response. I will check for the grounds on the ECU, and the other you mentioned in the trunk Electronics ( I have not looked in the trunk much ). I did take off the throttle body to clean it. I checked the six pin connector to the throttle body, and of the two wires going to the throttle body motor, one had ground, and the other had 4 volts. The other four pins, anoyther had 4 volts and the other three went to ground.

I use 7Zap for a parts catalog. They have locations of modules and whatnot and it shows all the electrical components but not diagrams. It might be helpful tho. It has stuff like this

@ktm2stroker - the battery is under the driver seat. You mentioned were having water drain into the car...I'd really check that battery and the wiring condition. Also check the condition of the battery itself through vcds.

As far as manuals you can do a single day registration at Erwin to download all the official Audi manuals per your vin.
